      Not a fan of this song, but I I think songs like Afterimage, Distant Early Warning, Kid Gloves and Between The Wheels are among their best. I might be wrong, but I´m under the impression that Grace Under Pressure has become loved by fans, even fans of the prog years, in later years.

    I remember when this piece came out, nobody liked it. I kept listening and soon was brainwashed into loving the hell of it. Rush music grows on you. You hear and recognize things unnoticed previously, the more you study it.

      The problem for me is not the keyboards but the reggae vibe to a lot of material. I get that the Police was big a few years ago. I understand people cross that there is less bass/kg though.

    I think this song has an iconic solo. Alex never seems to over play. When I taught guitar I used to pull out this solo as a great example of balance in composition.

    • @rumourhats

      It's fantastic that there's a sort of bass solo from Geddy that runs concurrent with Alex's solo. Neither of them trying to outdo each other, both complimenting their fellow's playing and not trying to drown their bandmate out or overshadow him. I can't think of another example of solos that work like this.

      @@sblaze4 Peart was born in Hamilton, Ontario,[5] and grew up in Port Dalhousie (now part of St. Catharines). During adolescence, he floated between regional bands in pursuit of a career as a full-time drummer. After a discouraging stint in England, Peart returned home to concentrate on music where he joined Rush, a Toronto band, in mid-1974, six years after its formation. Together they released nineteen studio albums, with ten exceeding a million copies sold in the United States. Billboard ranks the band third for the "most consecutive gold or platinum albums by a rock band".[A]

    I'm not a Rush fan but this song has blown me away ever since I first heard it back in the 80s... The sound AL goes with on his guitar is just so perfect for the theme of the song: Cold, stark, apocalyptic. His riffing at 3:25 nails it. GL's background keyboards are spooky, bleak and atmospheric. And then of course you have The Master driving it all with his marching drumbeat; it captures perfectly the world "1001" is trying to escape from. Awesome, awesome tune...

    Boy that Steinberger was a whole thing, huh? :) I like how, in these high-production Rush songs with keyboards etc. all over the place there will still be sections like the guitar solo in this song, where all of that gets pushed away and it's just the three of them taking flight, guitar/bass/drums.

    GUP, the album where Pratt started diving into electronic percussion and Dirk went to the Steinberger bass in which years later said he'd never play one again after that tour. The Rush sound changed here but like Ray Daniels said, every sound they tried, they were so good at it. I was always surprised Enemy Within never made any of their live shows after 1984.

      Geddy played the Steinberger live on not just the GUP tour but Power Windows tour after that. He also had a white Steinberger bass as a backup during the Presto & HFY tour. I only saw it once in when I guess his Wal crapped out. He played Closer To The Heart with it.

      I remember there was one tour where they played all 7 sections of 2112 to close set 1 instead of the usual Overture/Temples. It would have been interesting to do the Fear Series live.

    Sometimes music is ahead of its time. I started building computers and learning hacking around this time. I ordered Rush's catalog off Columbia House with a false name at 13. My mom was pissed but I knew Columbia couldn't collect without a SS. The day a Navy Cryptolgist and Rush fan was born.

    Neil Peart is unquestionably the GOAT of percussionists. He also happens to have a genius IQ and is a libertarian. Look up Dr. Tom Woods and Neil Peart if you question this. Neil Peart The GOAT! one of the best concerts I've ever witnessed!

    • @kevgamble
      @kevgamble 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not saying this applies to you, but selfish sociopathic creeps get excited when they think they can claim Peart as a political soulmate, when in reality he he believes in the philosophical potential of libertarianism but not in the inhumane, avaricious practice of it that most of its cretinous adherents propose. "'For a person of my sensibility, you’re only left with the Democratic party,' says Peart" www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/rush-neil-peart-geddy-lee-alex-lifeson-59586/

    This was the first Rush song I really liked. And let's face it...the marchy-beat tempo of this song, combined with the sci-fi theme in the video, made me really like this song. Plus...my appreciation for the bass guitar, as well as my desire to play one, makes me like this song. Neil Peart will always be one of rock music's iconic drummers. May he rest in peace.
