    Tony really is an underrated guitarist. That short solo he did on "Hard Hard Year" just blew my mind the first time I heard it. You're not even expecting it, and then he just rips with this distorted Beck/Hendrix style solo.

      I think he is still friends with Jimmy Page just as in the 60s when both recorded the solo for that same song, different versions, Hollies / Everly Bros.

    Tony Hicks is so under-rated; up there with the best British guitarists of the sixties, yet pulling in the same plaudits. Love his tight sound, without him the Hollies would not have sounded half as good.

    • @dalemac7796

      Totally agree. Although according to him, when Allan showed them "Long Cool Woman" he did keep 'fluffing" and supposedly said. "You play the intro, I'll fill in with something". I have been trying to mast Long Cool Woman for some time now, not much success.

      pilninggas Graham Nash was the other half that made The Hollies what they were in the mid 60's. Nash went on to far greater heights when he connected with David Crosby and Stephen Stills of course.

    • @pilninggas
      @pilninggas 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Jeffrey Marx
      in a sense Nash was 'rated', my point was that Tony Hicks somehow went under the radar yet was technically so gifted. I really like Nash, but Tony Hicks made the Hollies Rock long after Nash had buggered off to the States.

    • @marx007100
      @marx007100 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      pilninggas Hicks was great, but The Hollies were afraid to break the mold they were contained in, which was to produce teen pop music. Yes, it made tons of money, but it would not let them stretch their talents to a new level, and that was why Nash broke away from them, despite his love for the group.

    After Graham Nash the Hollies concentrated on Writing original material. From "HOLLIES SING HOLLIES" (1969) through to "A CRAZY STEAL" (1978) the Albums were filled with 'CLARKE/HICKS/SYLVESTER' songs. They listened too, and absorbed Contemporary sounds, Steely Dan, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan and many more. The results were First Rate. Albums such as "CONFESSIONS OF THE MIND" (1970) "HOLLIES" (1974) "ANOTHER NIGHT" (1976) & "A CRAZY STEAL" (1978) were all Excellent LP'S. For me personally, these equal anything the Hollies recorded with Graham.

    This is "Exhibit A" in the value of oral history. Each of us takes our true history and makes myth from the facts. This creates those personal myths which we use to explain our lives to others. We get so comfy in the telling that like in Tony Hicks version above, the truth can be gleaned by both what he includes in his personal myth or alibi and in what he leaves out. Great stuff, thanks!

We could imagine if they didn't needed to be back in the top charts, causing Graham to leave and morphing into a more CSNY type of sound as we found in Romany album, definitely influenced by American acts of the earlier 70sdecade,

    Imagine how great the Hollies would have been IF Graham stayed. I understand what had to happen, but an alternate reality would have seen The Hollies have a much better 1970's. They did chart, and quite well in the 70's, but they would have been epic with Grahams contributions. In the end, it was the right thing to do, and you could kind of tell that Graham was his own man apart from the band and had to spread his wings- as they say.

    • @jeffburnham6611

      Graham Nash was heavily influenced by Mama Cass, and the California drug scene. I still blame her for her part in this sad part of the Hollies history, which saw Nash leave and only to form CSNY. It was Nash and his harmonies that solidified what CSNY became.

    • @Harrisonianne
      @Harrisonianne 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I see about this, Graham couldn't stay because all of them they, somewhat lost confidence in Graham (who was their leader) after the Michael Cohen incident. I think Allan wanted to play it safely with the Hollies' style/formula for commercial success that had been secured hits for them years ago. In other hand, Tony Hicks wanted to write more original stuff (prob following Graham's desire to make original Hollies music) however Hicks would be at Clarke's side at the end due to his lack of interest of keeping their sound as psychedelic with no hits (Maybe it wil be sound a bit odd but I always see this like a divorce, being the parents - Allan and Graham and their kid - Tony, deciding in which side he wanted to stay lololol

      Excellent point. They had the chance to grow their musical interests and styles. I’m sure Graham would have helped them with that. But musical direction is the key point where most bands break.
      And it did the Hollies no good. Once they’d finished a few years of continued momentum, they were left on the margins. Their “ legacy” is nowhere near as big as Graham Nash. But it could of been. They certainly deserve it as musicians.
      I just think it was a critical choice of which road to go and they chose a path that became a road to nowhere.

      The ego is just a component of his abilities.
      The Hollies could have moved with the times like the Beatles and Stones, but chose not to.
      It’s fairly obvious from what Graham Nash achieved in America that his talent far outstripped theirs.
      The Hollies as a band were forever stuck in their Pop Pigeon hole. They still made great music, just never really progressed from 1965. Could have been a lot different.
      Tony Hicks should be revered as an important Guitarist in the story of popular music in Britain. But he isn’t well known because the Hollies never expanded or changed their repotoire. Graham Nash was proven right to do what he did.

    I think Graham wanted another Hollies member to follow - i can't think of another one rather than Hicks - Allan Clarke was never particularly appealed by anything themed the US. Although most of us could have guess Clarke was that one who will follow him through his new journey. In the other hand, Hicks was a driving melodic force for most of Nash Hollies' compositions. The way he said (they remained in contact few years after) he totally digs Grahams albums are telling me it could have been that way - but of course Tony didn't follow, staying loyal to The Hollies for long time up to date.
    Graham instead seems to have a love/hate thing (or even got that feel) when speaking about Hicks and The remaining Hollies in random interviews

    Creo que Graham como líder y mentor musical los llevó por una muy buena dirección, sin embargo hubo problemas financieros por su asociación indirecta a Dick James Music (por medio de su sello, la Parlophone) que pusieron en cierto grado de riesgo ese magnífico camino experimental que el grupo estaba tomando. No estaban siendo exitosos y necesitaban regresar a la línea POP/Comercial - sí o sí - por eso pienso que todos le fueron desertando en el camino a pesar de demostrar que también tenían esa versatilidad para desenvolverse en temas muy experimentales. Personalmente, los años de Graham Nash en The Hollies me parecen los más interesantes...

Graham simply outgrew The Hollies, and it's a good thing he did, he was meant to link up with Croz and Stills, CSN - CSNY became one of the biggest bands of all time, Graham was wayyyy better off going with his instinct and joining David and Stephen. CSN is STILL one of the greatest bands still playing and delighting us all. Woulda been a damn shame had he just stayed with The Hollies.... didn't see them filling up Wembeley with 100,000 people. When Graham Nash left the band it was the end of The Hollies.The rest is history,Nash had a carreer and I don't know what happened to the others.

      in a way yes, but not really, they apparently carried on and still had a career after Graham left, I dunno how great of a careet, but Graham says they were well off enough in his book.

      +xomthood and Sorry Suzanne...Gasoline Alley Bred. I personally loved the Hollies from start to finish. Pop, yes. But very very good pop. In fact, I would challenge that these six songs were as good as anything they ever with the exception of Bus Stop.

      Nash was NOT The Hollies... if he wanted to live... good for him but the Hollies survived and even now they are touring. Only two of the originals remain, true... but they still are The Hollies. It's funny that when they were honoured at the rock hall of fame only ex-hollies attended because the reales ones were presenting and touring.

    Tony said the problem was Graham's spending too much time in LA. What he didn't say was the group snubbed his music so they left him little choice. Graham went on to write meaningful songs while the Hollies continued making commercial noise. They had no message in an era when message mattered most.

    Hicks has been kicking himself in his ass ever since Nash left The Hollies. They made the wrong choices; they should have recorded his songs and they alienated him with their ill fated Bob Dylan music album. Nash was better than they were and they knew it.

      +Jeffrey Marx Sorry Suzanne, He ain't heavy he's my brother, The air that I breathe, and many other songs recorded after Nash's departure. They were as good after Nash as with Nash.

      +aabacchi The Hollies did manage to overcome his departure, but they couldn't get passed commercialized tunes. I agree, they had great hits, but Nash is still going and The Hollies are no more and I wish they were still with us. In rock history The Hollies will be viewed as one of his former groups and not much more sadly.

      exactly, but it's better that things happened the way they did, CSN was meant to happen, those songs would have been horrible done by The Hollies, at least definitely not nearly as good as they were done by CSN

      +aabacchi .. +1 brother... those are timeless classics, and whilst I am a big CSN fan, unless you *are* a CSN fan you will be hard pushed to name any of their songs. I doubt there is anyone on this planet over the age of 21 who doesn't know He Ain't Heavy or Air...

    • @robmccluskey6906
      @robmccluskey6906 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Jeffrey Marx Tony and Bobby are still touring with The Hollies. Allan had to quit due to his voice going, nothing more. I talk about The Hollies a lot on my facebook (personal) page... everybody knows them, even the young uns, but few know who Graham is, or even who CSN are.
      We tend to judge things from our own viewpoint and can be wide of the mark sometimes...
      ... but I do also wonder what may have been had Graham stayed and committed himself to The Hollies sound...
