I've noticed that a 9.5x905 v-belt is harder to find and has been replaced by a 10x905 cogged belt. Thanks for explaining the benefits of this design change!
i’m running a gates 7355XL recommended by the samba. The reason is none of the 3 belts would fit my 71 dual port with an alternator. my issue maybe a 67 lower pulley with a flat four upper. anyways it works really well and fits good. also cogged
Curious about the years you give for 6 Volt. At least in the US 6 Volt ended in '66 not '60. '67 was the first year for 12 Volt. Until a few months ago I didn't realize there were different belt sizes.
I use a smaller diameter Porsche 356 generator pulley in my alternator to get more fan speed and help with cooling (fan is welded and balanced, of course). The crank pulley is a Gene Berg Achiever. I need to check which number size I have.
So the only thing you really have to worry about is shims. Necessarily, you just have to get the belt deep enough. In the top generator alternator pulling to make it go faster.
Faster? The shims are determined by belt deflection, not used to change speed. Running fans faster is an old school solution for bus guys if that’s what you’re after - however, upgrading to an aluminum cooler is far more efficient than trying to change pulley speed
Great information, this channel is underrated!
Wow. This is such great information! I've been driving air cooled VW's for 40 years, and I had no idea about the differences in fan belts. Thank YOU!
Glad it was helpful!

So long as it’s cogged and threaded you are good. 👊🏽

Excellent as always!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great info as usual
Great info! Thanks so much
My pleasure!

36 hp stopped in 60. 6 volt generator larger diameter started in 61. That’s where the change came from. 👍🏽

The important part is the construction of the belt. Make sure it’s threaded/ reinforced.
Great information.
Glad you think so!
Excellent.
