    Rhys a Meinir
    The Legend of the Lost Bride
    On the westernmost peninsular of North Wales, an area known as the Lleyn, is a tiny isolated village called Nant Gwrtheyrn. Until recent times, the only access to it was a long narrow road. It is a village thousands of years old, surviving through successive periods of agriculture, mining and quarrying. It takes it's name from Vortigen - or Gwrtheryn in the Welsh tongue - A 5th century Kentish King who fled to the area to avoid his enemies, and is believed to have been buried here. These days the village is a residential centre for learning the Welsh language
    But in the year 1750, it was largely a simple farming community, consisting of three main farms. Ty Uchaf, or Upper House, Ty Canol or Middle House and Ty Hen, or the Old House. Within this community lived two people who were soon to be married. Rhys Maredydd, a strong young farmer and his fiance, Meinir. They had lived in the Nant all their lives and had been inseparable since childhood. They spent all their free time together, often at their favorite spot beneath a spreading hollow Oak tree on the slopes of Yr Eifl. Now, a date had been set for their wedding. They would be married in Clynnog church on the coming Saturday. The whole village were looking forward to the coming celebration.
    At this time there was a local tradition of "The Wedding Quest". It was a sort of Hide-and-seek game, where the bride would run and hide on the morning of her wedding. The wedding guests would search for, find and escort the Bride to the Church... that was how it was supposed to work... Saturday arrived and the guests assembled in the church and Meinir headed for the hills to hide. After allowing for a suitable head start, the guests set off to find her, but to no avail. A frantic Rhys joined the search party. Hours passed and still there was no sign of her anywhere. a distraught Rhys continued the search for months afterwards, slowly losing his mind.
    Whilst out searching one evening, Rhys was caught in a storm on Yr Eifl and sought shelter under the same old oak tree that had once been their favorite spot. As he sat curled up, sheltering from the driving rain, there was a mighty crack as a bolt of lightening struck the tree, splitting it in half. As the smoke and steam dispersed, Rhys looked up and was struck with horror. The now split trunk revealed a skeleton within, the skeleton of Meinir, still in her wedding dress. It is said that Rhys collapsed in shock and later died of grief. They were buried in the same grave. together at last.

    I love this place. One of my favourite places on the Llyn. It's great to walk over Yr Eifl to Trefor on the other side of the mountain.

      @@WillHuw I watch a lot of your videos Will and am trying to learn Welsh using your delightful videos.
      One request though... I'd hoped that you had done a video narration of the story of Prince Llewellyn and Gelert. I apologise if you have already done one and I've missed it.

    I remember this Legend. Did not know it was Nant Gwrtheyrn as the village they were from.
    Well presented and edited.
    An interesting true story, well some say it is....

    I'm really enjoying this Legend series, Will. Many a legend is said to contain a grain of truth. Is that the case here? Diolch yn fawr iawn eto.

    • @WillHuw
      @WillHuw  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well the legend is remarkably detailed. It includes Rhys' Surname, the name of the church they were to be married in (which still exists), and the names of the farms the two were from - Rhys was from Ty Uchaf, and Meinir from Ty Hen, so there may well be a basis of truth here :)
