I wish all doctors were like you, outstanding explanation of surgical procedures to different types of bunions. I was so afraid of surgery I have endured lots of pain trying to avoid it but I gave up I am about to go thru a lapidus bunionectomy and I am glad I found your Video and was able to understand diferent procedures.
Thank you Dr. Clain, I have a combination of the issues you showed and appreciate your insight as to how you go about creating a treatment plan. Foot problems and surgery for feet is such transparent problem. I sure wish I wasn’t one of the “lucky” ones who have to deal with it.
Thank you for your comment. Dr. Clain will be presenting this topic again tomorrow, April 14, at 6 pm. You can ask you question at the end of that presentation or make an appointment to see Dr. Clain in the Greenwich or Harrison office. So satisfying to watch and very clear and informative. I want to fly there for this surgery. I am terrified to have it done in Chicago. I am down to one pair of hiking boots I can wear. I am afraid mine will be unfixable if I wait much longer to do this.
I wish I had seen his video prior to having Lapiplasty 5 weeks ago. I believe my bunion problem could have been solved with the first simple method you showed. Instead, I had the lapiplasty and have had the most horrible nerve pain ever. I am still in pain and have not been able to put weight on my foot yet. I am told recuperation will last 4 months but people tell me they have had pain and swelling for up to a year. I regret having had the surgery. P.S. I have had a total of 7 surgeries in my body and this has been the worse of all.
Wow, I’m so sorry to hear this! I’ve had many surgeries like you, for me major joint replacements, knee, shoulders, now hip which went and still is really hard to deal with. My bunions are bad, My feet hurt bad, my toes on both feet are crossed etc. My family wants me to get them done but,…. I’m terrified. I’m so sick of recovering from surgical pain!!! Ugh! I have to think this through a lot more!!!! I also have hammer toes. Ugh…… I hope you’ll be ok?!
@@Kristen71 After a year and almost 4 months my foot still hurts specially near the bunion and under the toe. I had to have a 2nd surgery on April of this year or 6 months after the first surgery, to remove the 2 plates and 9 screws. After that I felt better with a significant reduction of pain and PT is easier to do or doable. I was not able to do the exercises as prescribed when I had the plates and screws on my foot due to pain and swelling. The only shoes I can wear now are Trabucco by Asics. They are like comfortable heavy duty shock absorbers. Don't get me wrong I can walk every where but only with those sneakers. Walking on sand at the beach helped me a great deal but I will need to wait till summer. It's cold in New England now. I am hoping to be able to wear regular shoes in 6 month or a year. We shall see. I believe I will need an adjustment on my orthotics, Apparently my gate causes more pressure on the big toe area which caused the bunion. At least that is what the doctor said.
@@bkiyinmango7231this sounds like it has been very difficult for you! I’m so sorry!! Did you do the Lapiplasty thinking it would be easier as they market it? Would you do a traditional bunionectomy if you had it to do over again?
Hello sir im also flat footed, now with pain under foot when bone bangs on floor (maybe the tarsal bone?) at the instep (flat since birth) can flat feet arch be raised along with bunion correcting please ? - Identical to patient 7:04 Thank you.
Wow!!! Thank you for this video. I have a bunion similar to the first picture you showed , a mild bunion. And my doctor told me it would be crazy to do surgery on my feet when I could just do some kind of feet exercises that can "Help" with my bunion. And guess what NONE OF THEM WORKED. Wish I could go to you doctor 😢
What a fantastic video! Thank you! I’ll use this when I see a podiatrist. My feet are on your worst scale either hammer toes and they’re crossed like when you cross your fingers. Thank you.
Liked the video, such calm voice! It is a pity bunions often treated with a surgery that requires complex rehabilitation. Wouldn't it be great if bones can be put to proper place w/out surgery?
That's a very informative video. I shall keep this in mind as i seek out a doctor to treat my left foot bunion. I have left foot bunion - all because since a child my mother bought shoes to fit my 8.5 size right foot. As an adult in my 40s a shoe clerk told me I having to wear shoes to fit my bunion foot which was a size 9, but that left my non-bunion foot swimming in 8.5 size shoe, even with padding, my foot kept slipping out. I couldn't buy any shoes to suit both my feet.
I've heard of a service that matches people with divergent shoe sizes but I can't remember it's exact name- like a size 9 and 8.5 with its reverse match. If you can agree on styles it would be Heaven Sent, wouldn't it?
I just got my my first bunion 8 weeks ago it's slowly growing, and it hurts so much when I walk on it. Also, it gets really swollen for 3 days . I have to walk on one side of my foot, and it is still very uncomfortable. My question is Will it stop hurting as soon as it fully grows ?
What is the usual recovery time and how is range of motion affected? I have almost no movement in my big toe due to bunion. Making it almost impossible to walk some days . Constant pain .
Thank you so much! Wish you were the one doing my toe, after a motorcycle accident..a year later it became a severe bunion. might be arthritic also cause of the size of the joint. Thanks for that tip Doc
I think you are awesome and you explain everything so well your videos are yes very helpful can’t wait to see you I also have bunions on both feet thank you again
What type of anesthesia is used and how long is surgery I’m so scared of the pain I will feel after , my entire foot and toes are deformed with now a bunnionette
I like your approach. How much short will the big toe be after surgery? Can you do a correction on both feet at the same time? Where are you situated? Complete recovery time? Do you know anyone in the UK who follow your method?
Hi I'm in UK. Had surgery in 1992 when I was 23. Bilateral metatarsal osteotomy. Big for not really shorter but foot straighter. I had both feet done simultaneously. My complete recovery time was about 8 weeks. One foot healed before the other. Scars on top of feet can be painful in tight boots. Now I'm 52 and left foot has slight bunion again. HTH
P.S. I had bunions \deformed feet from childhood so prolly genetic (adopted so guessing). No metal; they just shortened the metatarsal and treated it like a broken bone I guess. I expected to get arthritis but when I was 23 I wanted pain free feet which did not look like ducks' feet
While I'm not happy about having surgery, I now realize that the sooner the correction, the less invasive the surgery.

I start my surgery rotation as a DPM student Monday. This is liquid gold thank you!
Very very helpful to look at the variety of surgical procedures and the before & after pictures. Thank You.
This is by far the most informative bunion surgery options video I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen quite a few of them!
I’m really afraid about my upcoming surgery and this is making me feel a lot more confident.
God is with you. You didn’t stumble on this doctor by chance. Blessings.
I had my surgery yesterday how do u feel know?
Both my big toes are pointing in opposite ways. I believe it affects my balance.
DPM student, thank you for the before and afters!
Wow! Great job doctor, I wish I had seen you before I had my bunion surgery. I just have 2 big/long screws on the first metatarsal.

Amazing correction. My mother in law had both feet done at the same time. Good outcome, back in the 1970’s.

Nothing relieves a bunion EXCEPT surgery.

Doctor, you said that it is not known why the bunions form, but is it not because shoes have been designed too narrow for the human foot?
My doctor at BIDMC did not give me any options.

Do all these procedures grant a permanent result of no relapse?
Don’t we understand how that happens?
Isn’t it because of the structure of the foot?

Why doesnt the toe bend out with the other bone? Why does it bend in?
its a muscu-skeletal problem. when he says "we dont quite understand how it happens", he means that he gets paid for cutting, not physical therapy :)
