I just got one of these. Not the death trap they were described as. Rough sure, but functional. Would love to find a rope-hole last ditch to round out the T99 collection. Subbed.
When you say ground off the markings, are you referring to the Chrysanthemum? If so, that was at the request of the Japanese. The Chrysanthemum symbol marked it as property of the Emperor. So with it destroyed, it was technically no longer property of the emperor. Very nice rifle you have. I've got a pretty last ditch myself. Bought it off the vet who brought it back! He'd gotten away with partially buffing off the mum, leaving it mostly intact.
I still hope to add a last ditch to my collection. I've got 2 earlier Type 99's, and the last ditch rifle sure aren't as "nice" but the history behind them is well worth it. EDIT: I haven't shot mine yet either. I'm going to do hand loads when I can, but I am told that Norma makes 7.7 Jap. I think PPU does as well.

The "death traps" were the training rifles that were never meant to take real cartridges.

I bought one for $95 a few years ago. I love it.
Matthew 23:1-39 Woe unto you!

Bill Melater try Steinel ammunition. Lots of vintage cartridges. Including 6.5 and 7.7 Japanese
I'll give it a try! I planned to make some out of 30-06, but it would be nice to have some dedicated brass.
Steinel is affordable and new manufacture ,just bought some last month.
