    Herters slugs are Winchester slugs, just different branding. You're comparing apples to apples from the same tree. Any difference you see is a normal batch to batch variation.

      Most of the parts on a pre 64 model 70 were hand fitted. The pre 64 is the far superior rifle. They had a better trigger and controlled round feed. The newest model 70s are once again controlled round feed.

    They only came in 20 gauge. I have a 17C Deluxe model made in 1928 with a solid rib and hand cut checkering. I also have a 20 gauge Ithaca Model 37 in 20 gauge. The Model 17 is much lighter and more svelte than the Ithaca. Parts look very similar, but parts from one won't fit the other. What you have is NOT the Premier, Those were heavily engraved. You have the 17B - Special Grade. That had a plain barrel, but the hand cut checkering.

    Slugs can be very accurate. Foster slugs in a rifled choke tube at 50 yards can shoot an inch group. I shoot 2.5 inch groups with a smoothbore regularly and wouldnt except no more than 3.5 inch groups with any hunting slug. The foster slug will engauge the rifling in a rifled barrel and will usually shrink the groups. The Lyman slug I load will shoot under 2 inch at 50 with a smooth bore. I would suggest trying different chokes and slugs to see whitch one youre gun likes best. And rifel choke tubes usually improve my groups.

    When you say ground off the markings, are you referring to the Chrysanthemum? If so, that was at the request of the Japanese. The Chrysanthemum symbol marked it as property of the Emperor. So with it destroyed, it was technically no longer property of the emperor. Very nice rifle you have. I've got a pretty last ditch myself. Bought it off the vet who brought it back! He'd gotten away with partially buffing off the mum, leaving it mostly intact.

    I want to get a model 70 30-06 that I can use for the rest of my life. should I get a pre64 or should I buy a new model 70? if I get a pre 64 I feel like I shouldn't use it very much lol

    • @tedpfenninger4972
      @tedpfenninger4972 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had some experience with both. The new version (OMHI) are every bit as smooth and functional as the pre -64. They are available with synthetic stocks which are ,more rugged and will give better service in the field. The barrel making technology had improved significantly in the last 60 years, so a new rifle will Iikely be more accurate. I have 2 of the old ones. I shoot them, but I don't hunt with them. Good luck whatever you decide.

      @@wizardofahhhs759 too late lol already bought a pre 64 and put a weaver scope from around the same year as the rifle with some old quick switch Redfield rings. I love the vintage set up. Scope folds over and i can use iron sights. It was kind of hard finding that setup but it was worth it for sure. Don’t shoot it much because it’s so old but it shoots good. My pawn shop 22-250 is a nail driver so I’ll probably always use that for most of my shooting. If I ever want to shoot anything big I’ll take out the vintage 30.06!

  • @hudsonriley2094
    @hudsonriley2094 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The barrel nut only turns a 1/4 turn down as if you were tightening the barrel. It’s a left hand thread. After screwing the barrel nut down all you do is grab the barrel and turn it 1/4 twist then the barrel comes off. It’s easier if you pull the slide back a inch or so. I have the same gun. They were only produced in 20 gauge only.

    The recoil pad would have been steel on that one the pads we’re only plastic on the very last made pre 64 rifles I think the bolt in your gun was out of a standard grade otherwise it would have been jeweled on the super grade

    • @lmbear
      @lmbear 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Winchester did not standardize the bolt jeweling on the supergrades, until after 1954. That would make this one correct. Everything looks correct, and original, except for the pad. Very well explained video, about this 1946 transition supergrade. Very cool old piece of history there!

    if you put a b-square saddle scope mount on there it will it will shoot 2" groups at 100. nova's are good guns for throwing slugs. they have a tighter bore than american made shotguns and it shows with slugs.

    I think the current model 70 is now being made in portugal not north carolina. The current model 70 is more reminiscent of the pre 64 model 70 than previous versions as it shares the same bolt style.

      The right bolt lug runs in a special slot in the receiver, a feature of the old post-64s. It also lacks the support ing lug that rides in left receiver raceway, but you are substantially correct, thanks for your comment.
