I kiss each of my dogs goodnight and tell them that I love them right before going to bed. Not sure if it makes a difference to them, but it makes me connect to the gratitude I have for them so maybe that’s helpful to them. ❤️
I've searched for "how to give your dog a good life" and found this video. And I love what I just watched ❤️ I'm happy to know there are people that care this much about dogs, and that you are sharing such loving wisdom about how to care for them. Thank you for this 🐶💕
This is so great Susan. Thank you! Additionally, I help my dog by counting in 3s when doing uncomfortable things…such as teeth brushing, eye drops, paw trimming, nail clipping,..etc. When sentient mammals can anticipate when a discomforting activity will end, they can tolerate much better and reduce their stress and anxiety level. It’s an aspect of choice and agency. For teeth brushing, I count: 1, 2, 3-brush only for the duration of the count, then feed a treat. Then continue repeating until his whole mouth is done. The contact is only during the counting and he knows that at 3 it will stop and he’ll get a delicious reward. I learned this from an ethologist, Karolina Westlund who worked with trainers-and in one video showed how a lion would voluntarily cooperate during handling.
Thanks for reminding me. I might try practising counting to three in Spanish doing Eps nails. We used it with heel focus and Eps loves tres already. I'd never thought to try this with nails.
Thank you @sunshine. I bought a dental stick.from my vets put he just started eating the plastic that he chews off. It was a really expensive one and I told them what had happened.. They didnt seem concerned at all though it was the receptionist I was talking to.
This episode feels like it was made for some owners I am helping. They worked with a professional a couple times and it was not helping them. I’ve told them all I know from you, and showed them several things in person, and shared podcasts. Just this afternoon she said to me: “I can't help but think he may be calmer and more willing to work with us now because he finally feels understood 😢❤️ Which is 100% from the way you interacted with and rewarded him and taught us to do the same” Thank you for saving this dogs life!!!!
That was the best. I give my dog all the freedom possible. Clicker training as a pup then shortly after , treated her like a family member. always talked to her whether she understood it or not, I'm sure she does now. she has her own doggie dog. When on hikes on or off leash she will stop when another path branches off to say I want to go this way. she sleeps where ever, she still goes into her crate, door was removed shortly after getting it and crate covered with a bed sheet, she likes sleeping on the hallway carpet and her cuddler bed. I aways felt the need for them to enjoy being a dog. Give them love, trust and understanding and they will give that in return. She is a 7 year old Border Collie.
I love you Susan ❤️ thank you for reminding us to work with compassion, its an important reminder for life. Can't wait for recallers to open, we can really benefit from the program!
Thank you for sharing ways to create joy for dogs. Useful and interesting. Snuggles after dinner, cued zoomie time, have a sniff, roly-poly time after AD work shifts and digging holes on cue are some of the activities Eps loves. She took some time to be braver around water (which is ok with me as there are crocs here) and can swim now and will hop in the creek when she is hot. Toe nails being any sort of enjoyable experience is a very slow process. Lucky for us Eps only has 4 toes on each foot (no dew claws in her breed generally). We work on it everyday and hope it gets easier. 🐾💞🐾
I like to provide information to my dog. Key phrases or words that mean certain things for them. Helps transitions, helps in uncertain situations, and it helps my dogs out life into their own context and make good choices because I provide the information they’re seeking
Your podcast so often covers exactly what I've been describing to clients. It's almost like you were listening to my conversations! Thank you for putting these ideas & strategies in fun-form for us all. Shared too. Click & reward.
This falls under some of your earlier points...involve your dog in as many aspects of your life as you can: travel, camping, shopping, visit with friends, outdoor cafe, parks, hikes etc. Of course a dog with manners, aka training, helps make all this possible and enjoyable for you both. And. .. We have a raised dog bed which my girl loves. I gave up on putting nice beds on top because she destroys them by digging. So I have a fleece blanket that I fold on top and she dig dig digs up all day. It's pretty much indestructible, easy to wash and oh yes, gives her no end of fun. Great podcast 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
love this - and yes my husband always teases me about number of beds -- hey hon while your out maybe consider another dog bed - i can see some open spots on floor!
Loved the dog bed couch information. I enjoy the time I use to process information after an episode with my notes and just arrange my thought around new ideas. Bravo
I would love a detailed, step-by-step video on how to teach a bark as a request to go potty! My pup is 7 months, and doesn't have access to all areas of the house to find us if she needs to potty, so the bark would be a more useful way for her to tell us she needs to go pee! :)
I try to do exactly what you suggested and so I feel even more I am on the right way. ( Big variety of walks, of different food, different dog beds, different training. Lots of games etc. ) They love to be with me, BUT there is one thing I can't persuade the 9 year old male to choose me. If he gets the smell of nice females in his nose. Then he is completely out of order and not listening at all. Any advice?? I had and have other males, but never so difficult to handle in such a situation.
Great ideas! What is the harness that the dog is wearing at 11:34 min of the podcast? I'm having trouble finding a harness that fits my dog's narrow chest, doesn't restrict her legs and has a handle. Thank you.
I need help with how to provide enrichment for a formerly-active senior dog who now has IVDD and vestibular issues and has one spinal surgery. I don't know how to make his life less disappointing now; food isn't the whole answer b/c we must manage his weight.
Hi @deadflowerss143! You are not alone, and Susan has the perfect podcast for you: th-cam.com/video/JGUB1REiIlA/w-d-xo.html Happy training! (Elena ~ DogsThat Team)
what if the puppy love bitting/nipping while playing , and not food motivated or extremely picky on her treat and often lost interest after fed a few times? Was going to purchase your game course, but We limit playtime and taking break on training due these reason. Help?
To add, we have more than 30 kinds of treats to rotate, have tried canned food, cooked, freeze dried, kibble , she still refuse her food after eating it couple times, and picky on her treats and chew. Also, we changing feeding methods. I started to think we are encouraging her being picky by providing so much options

Number 7 is giving me the approval I needed to buy the dog bed I've been eyeing up 🙈🤭😍❤
Just do it, Mackenzie! 😉❤️🐾🍪💕
My new goal is to watch one of your videos each day! So much information.
That's what I am going to do now I have discovered this wonderful method of connection with our beloved dogs. Thanks so much
❤❤❤
I have 2 dogs and 6 dog beds... thank you for permission to get more!! I'll just tell my husband Susan said I could!! 🤣
Absolutely!

What brand of elevated dog bed do you recommend?

Hi @jaimemiller7950 check out this video - th-cam.com/video/pf6_E1TRYxU/w-d-xo.html
My dog would let me do ANYTHING to him because his top reinforcer is me lol. Meaning he adores me so much that it’s 100% trust

Love a reason to get another dog bed (I mean, we have loads but what’s one more?)
Great ideas! What is the harness that the dog is wearing at 11:34 min of the podcast? I'm having trouble finding a harness that fits my dog's narrow chest, doesn't restrict her legs and has a handle. Thank you.
I wish ALL dog owners would give in their time for at least one week and spent it working/training there dogs.
I need help with how to provide enrichment for a formerly-active senior dog who now has IVDD and vestibular issues and has one spinal surgery. I don't know how to make his life less disappointing now; food isn't the whole answer b/c we must manage his weight.
Guess it’s time to go get some cushies to put on the raised beds…😊
hi i am someone who has a busy life,
how should i go about time management and implementing these types of things into my daily schedule?
Hi @deadflowerss143! You are not alone, and Susan has the perfect podcast for you: th-cam.com/video/JGUB1REiIlA/w-d-xo.html
Happy training! (Elena ~ DogsThat Team)
My dogs also live cushy beds on beds. I also use throw blankets and they nest in them. Alas I have my first dog ( in 40 years) that shreds them. 🙁

Is there a video on teaching your dog to love swimming?
Yeah there is, have a look through the episodes
Here's the link for you: th-cam.com/video/oexSF-V3ELg/w-d-xo.html
Can you list the 7-8 protein foods that you rotate? Thanks!
Our current rotation: 1. Beef 2. Turkey 3. Rabbit 4. Kangaroo 5. Bison 6. Salmon 7. Venison 8. Chicken
Any reason for no eggs, cheese, or yogurt?
@@terrihadlock5594They get homemade coconut yogurt every day, eggs in their training treats and cheese I do not use with my dogs in any form
You just want excuses to get more dog beds… Milo eats beds, his only comfort that he hasn’t eaten is a piece of carpet 😂
Oops, you caught us!
