My monster Frankenstein cook kit.
I absolutely love your channel. My wife and I recently started backpacking and using advice from you and other youtubers we've been able to build out our packs nicely and on a budget and keep our base weight under 20lbs each.
Glad to hear it!
My cook kit consist of the Stanley 700 ml pot, a 14oz gsi outdoor mug, BSR stove, and a tea strainer for my coffee, all of which plus fuel fits inside the stanley. It may weigh twice as much as other kits all together but its all tough and cost me about $50 all together.
Can't wait to see how you cook Frankenstein
Others have mentioned the GSI Minimalist (which often goes on sale for ~$29 vs normal price of $35). I use this cook system and found that it is the best for those who just want to boil water for themselves.
It is so versatile and lightweight. Ive used mine for 5 years now and haven’t found a better cook for system.
It comes with a silicon grip handle which works great. Ive never burned myself using it. It also has a coozie which is great for handling the pot and keeping hot drinks hot when its cold. The lid it comes with can be used to sip or as a lid for boiling water by simply turning the lid upside down so it fits loosely.
I highly recommend this cookset! Its the only piece of gear that i have not upgraded or replaced because it has lasted so long and imho, i havent seen a better replacement.
Same, no desire to replace it. I have others, but when on long distance hiking, it always comes with me.
That's a lot of stuff to buy just to basically recreate the GSI Minimalist which you can pick up for 35 bucks. It also includes a much better pot grabber that I actually prefer over handles.
The one advantage this setup has is packability. With the GSI set, the lid won't quite go on snug when I put my pocket rocket deluxe in. Other stoves fit fine, the PRD is just a big stove.
Great tip!
I found a silicone sipper lid that fits my Toaks 550. LOVE IT! It stays firmly on so I can use it as a lid when I store my canister in the pot. Unfortunately the company I bought it from (Riveted Oaks designs) doesn’t make anymore.
yeah this^. Recently saw setup this on My Life Outdoors (I think???) who I think noticed this from Justin. The collapsible Sea to Summit silly-cone mug fits on my Toaks - yet I am still using a rubberband.
Perfect cook kit for a one night is stopping by Subway before I hit the trail. No cooking, no cleanup, and no weight on the way back. Even comes in its own trash bag!
Good point!
Subway is garbage. Plenty of other better sub spots.
Fact!
The big drawback though is you have to eat subway with their fake bread and questionable cuts.... So Idk lol
I live in Alaska. We’ve had wildfires a lot recently. So I adjusted by grabbing a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme when heading out before getting to the wilderness. And a sub for the first lunch or dinner whilst setting up camp. It makes life easier. The trash gets thrown in a gallon baggie in the bear canister to cut down on food smells. Bears are big here 🐻😂💕🏕️
Thanks, Dan, for correcting your pronunciation of Oregon "Ory-gun".👍
From an Oregonian 🙂
and he still managed to over-correct from "gone" to "gun" but at least he tried. :)
@@poofygoof
😀
At least he got the memo! (Oregonian too)
Most fuel efficient setup is Jetboil Stash pot with a Sotowindmaster totaling 7.4 oz. There is a Reddit thread with someone doing testing
Jetboil stash pot with MSR Deluxe Maybe a bit heavier 🤷
So glad i was able to scoop the MSR pocket rocket deluxe up for like $35 on sale, ive had nothing but great experiences with it
Been running a similar setup for years, snow peak 1l titanium pot pr2 stove, snow peaks also came with a 500ml drinking cup that the 1l fit into.
Changed last year to a msr windburner, its a bit heavier but so much better on bc’s west coast.
Fire maple petrel paired with the fire maple green peak stove offers pretty much everything you're looking for here with the exception of being titanium. I'm extremely happy with the setup
Msr deluxe handles pans of most sizes brilliantly. Easy win.
Ive just recently got into backpacking but have been aware of it my entire life because of my dad going when i was young. Hes no longer here to talk about it with but ive always been intrigued by it. Ive watched many of your videos and even bought the flextail zero pump from watching your video. Waited months for it but finally got it recently. I got the Stanley 2 cup kit too because of your video on it. The main thing is that i appreciate you continuing to search for the latest most up to date best equipment out there and i hope you keep it up! I really enjoy your videos and appreciate the time you you put into this 👍
I use the Sea to Summit X-mug with the Toaks 750. It fits perfectly on top.
Just bought the Evolved 750 pot and BSR stove, perfect set up!
I had this sort of serendipity with my OG GSI Halulite Minimalist lid and a 750ml titanium pot I just got :D it weighs an ounce more than your lid there, but it's a backpacking sippy cup lol and again lol, I weighed my Halulite pot against titanium and went "welp"
so, TIL, locktite the screw holding the igniter on my new Amicus...
I feel like I saw that spoon in the camping section at Walmart tonight while grabbing a new backpack (it has a duffle-style zipper/opening vs top load, I ADORE this setup).
Thanks for sharing, I love cobbling together gear sets
I have one of those stoves and I noticed the screw holding the igniter was loose. I put a spot of JB weld and retightened it, and it has been good ever since.
The SOTO Amicus (no igniter version) and Thermostack pot set is what does it for me. I don't ever buy stoves with igniters.
On that missing screw...
Bring your stove to a hardware store with open bins of screws. Randomly try various small metric stainless steel machine screws, till you find the correct thread pitch and diameter (it will screw in the old threaded hole, nicely).
If it is too long, careful work with pliers, a grindstone and a tin of cooling water will fix that excess length.
For quite a while I used the old aluminum fosters can with fiberglass cord wrapped around it... but those are quite flimsy. Much lighter than titanium though!
Great video! Always enjoy your work and appreciate your POV. For just boiling water, I've been using the Jetboil Stash mostly. The fluxring makes it super efficient and it's very space efficient. I have too many stoves and pots in my collection so it's been surprising that the stash has gotten the most use this past year
The Soto lid is available as a replacement from Soto
As Well as using imperial units can you always put a measurement in metric for non-american users (ie the rest of the planet) It really would make your videos that bit better.
I finally picked up a titanium mug three years ago (with handles). Don't care for it. It is sooo hot to drink from. Burns your hand and your lips.
Favorite part…Dan calling out “Dan.” 😂😂😂
Aluminum typically is similar weight to titanium and aluminum transfers heat much better than titanium. I carry an aluminum 2.5 cup pot with a tight fitting lid and it weighs 5oz
FYI: Another lid that fits (albeit a tad snug) into the Toaks 750 is the lid for the GSI halulite minimalist set. That lid is amazing for sipping coffee. 👌🏻
Thanks for the info!
I love my Ozark trail spoon, too!. It's lighter than titanium and dosnt burn my lips and tongue. Went to buy a few more cuz they are only 1$...can't find them anywhere 😢
GSI Minimalist set had this year's ago in halulite aluminum.
Trangia makes a canister burner for thier stoves. I love mine.
❤😂🎉🎉🎉 Great to see you, Dan!!
Their new arrival 750 titanium cup at REI website is like a wide pot as opposed to the tall cup form. Probably not what you were hoping for, if that's the thing.
I use (or “borrow “) the spoon from those milkshakes machines you buy at gas station . They are long enough and light weight that I don’t need to buy a $20 titanium spoon from REI. Plus I get the shake
the titanium pot is lighter than the aluminum pot, but the handles account for the extra weight.
Don’t forget Dan, no handles on the Soto pot so need to add the weight of the grabber ;-)
I’m with you…handles all the way 😀
Your Wisconsin is showing with how you pronounce "Oregon" :)
-From a Madisonian
I feel ridiculous i already have darwins evolved pot preordered and a soto thermolite on the way. Guess i should be thankful i have choices though. Thanks for your Frankenstein advice lol
Thanks Dan!
They make a repair kit for MSR stoves too. I have needed to use it twice.
Jetboil stash. Boils water pretty quick
I have two kits:
1) 750ml Toaks titanium pot with nest Toaks cup and MSR burner
2) 750ml Boundless Voyage titanium canteen (military style) pot with nesting cup, modified BCB FireDragon folding stand, and Evernew titanium alcohol burner with cross bars.
Kit one is for miles, kit 2 is for quiet and relaxing…
My go to bush pot is pathfinder from david Canterbury.
Ozark trail made a good hard plastic spoon that went out of production right after you talked about it. It was only 99 cents.
Great info on new pots!
It only makes sense that you make your own product 😁
😲
Dan, you should try the Fire-Maple 600ml G3 Petrel Ultralight Pot, it has the straining plastic lid, a heat exchanger, is made in a way that you don't need a wind screen (you do have to have a 3 arm stove, like the Pocket Rocket) and saves fuel because of the heat exchanger.
Weight?
6 oz, but remember no wind screen, and the fuel savings.
I see the convenience of the plastic Soto lid fitting snugly on a Toaks pot -- at least for stowing in your pack. But what about for cooking: trying to remove a tightly fitting lid on a pot of boiling water? Does't seem to me to be as safe as having a loose-fitting lid.
I have a Soto Amicus as well but I haven’t used it enough to have that problem with the igniter.
Still…if they S E L L a repair kit that probably means it’s a faulty design
Also, not a very Japanese way of thinking for a Japanese company
Yup my Soto burned/melted it's piezo. I could stiil use it though with a lighter. So not a deal breaker for me.
Great conclusion at the end... aluminum and titanium pots of the same size weigh rougly the same.
To make an aluminum pot and a titanium pot roughly equally strong, it takes about double the wall thickness for the aluminum pot.
But... titanium is about twice as dense, so it average out to the same!
Stainless steel is roughly as dense as titanium and the wall of a stainless steel pot need to be nearly as thick as the aluminum pot for the same strenght, so it will be significantly heavier, often nearly twice as heavy for the same size.
Hopefully the soto titanium will also have foldable handles
Interesting. I love my Toaks pot with its handles but also am not thrilled with the lid. I'd love to see Toaks offer a snap tight lid. Hint hint, Toaks!
I feel like a little loctite would fix that piezo problem and make that a great stove.
I’d say there’s a big opportunity for someone to fix a lids for all these pots and pans out there. I mean it’s a lid! I use the Snowpeak Trek 900, lid is crap but I holds a bigger canister with a stove( Soto Wind master) also still looking for the perfect set up. And yes I’ve got several different stoves and pots. I do like my Fusion Trek I think it’s called for safety reasons.
Wish I hadn't watched this. I have the Toaks pot. Now I want the lid for it. Dan, can we talk the "super nice great service" Soto people into selling just the lid?
Was laughing all along 😂
Your monster what?!?! 😮
Regarding both pots having only a 1 gram weight difference, I have one word for you: HANDLES.
The Soto pot does NOT have handles or handle hinges, but, on the other hand (no pun intended), it is a larger capacity 750ml pot no-handled pot, as opposed to the 550ml TOAKS handled pot. Still, Al vs. Ti. Go figure! Cheers. P.S. Does discussion about pots make us potheads? LOL. Cheers.
That Ozark Trail spoon has been on my Christmas list for two years now. Been sold out as you know. However, to my surprise during this last Christmas my stocking had a 2-pack of Ozark Trail long flexible spoons, just like yours. So maybe they are making them again? Used it just this last weekend on an overnight trip.
Thanks for at least kinda addressing the ozark trail spoon. That $1 ship sailed a long time ago. I’ve tried to find them and they aren’t available.
It would be nice to find a runner up for those of us just starting out that would love to have a cheap but decent spoon.
I’ll keep my eye out for a runner up!
Agree with you! The toaks 750 lid sucks. I wish I could buy soto's lid individually!
Apparently you can...it's new
Still tinkering with "my perfect cook kit", can you fit the soto windmaster in the toaks 750 pot?
Titanium is havier (and stronger)metal then aluminum. That why they wights the same
Plastic lid? Won’t it melt if you need a lid on you pot when you are cooking?
What fuel canister is that? Because I have the toaks 750 and the fuel canister I have doesn't fit!
Excellent
I just use the toaks 750 😂 , the pickyness is funny 😂
Ozark Trail spoon is about $5.50 as 4/19/24. Out of Stock at the moment.
Thanks for the video Dan. I too was looking for a snug lid for my Toaks 750 and lo and behold my Jetboil lid fit perfectly...then I boiled some water with it snapped on and it melted. I guess the built in coozie absorbs enough of the heat to prevent this happening on the Jetboil pot. So my question is, can you boil water in your Toaks pot with the Soto lid snapped on without it melting?
So can you buy the Soto lid separately
Thanks ? I tried all my plastic lids on my Toaks pot ----No luck.
Has anyone verified the gradation marks on the Toaks 750ml? I have a 650ml Valtcan I bought years ago and the markings are off considerably.
❤ from 🇮🇪
WTB ultralight subwoofer
My Evernew 900ml lid is the same it doesn’t stay on and it’s quite annoying.
Every gram matters, Toaks lid is superior.
nothing wrong with Frankenstein gear.
anybody Trai new firemaple cook kit
They now sell a titanium pot, but with a titanium lid on it... BUT you can buy the plastic lid seperately 😂
It's diferent lid. Get smaller dimensons
I'll stick with my Stanley Adventure Kit and cheap chinese stove. :-)
Love that Stanley adventure kit! It’s definitely a staple and well worth the price.
So you want a pot to hold fuel and stove with a lid..... it's called JET BOIL.
Ti is better than aluminum because it won't bend.
Man I love your videos but the clickbate is getting a little out of hand
I work at REI and was showing a customer the toaks 750 pot. Right as I said "too bad that lid doesnt snap on" they turned it upside down and it stayed put. Too my surprise, just that one on the shelf was slightly bent or out of shape enough to just barely snap on. He was sold immediately haha.
Thanks for at least kinda addressing the ozark trail spoon. That $1 ship sailed a long time ago. I’ve tried to find them and they aren’t available.
It would be nice to find a runner up for those of us just starting out that would love to have a cheap but decent spoon.
Backpackers Pantry sells a 9.9" long plastic spoon made by GSI. The spoon bowl is silicone covered - so easy to clean. About $5 . True as of May 2024
@@danielcotts8673 that seems to be one of the cheapest ones. I got mine at REI. It’s decent.
I liked the video. I’m a sucker for more efficient cooking stuff.
BTW, The reason the Toaks weighs almost as much as the Soto is due to the aluminum handles and bracket on the Toaks.
The Soto titanium pot will need either handles or the coozy with some sort of claw handle because the titanium will convey heat better than aluminum. I’d bet the Soto pot with coozy and handle is going to be heavier than the Toaks pot.
I think if Soto sold just the top more folks would buy that item. I know I would. But I’m not paying $38 for a plastic top. That’s something only rich Dudes like Dan can afford.
True but 38 for a top and a coozy maybe 😇?
Strictly water boiling here also.
For my hikes I use a 750 alu pot (+wobbly lid) which fits a gas canister and a MSR Pocketrocket 2 stove, true to it's name.
Plus I use a foldable plastic tripod for the canister for stability and also a piece of 'extra strong version/ribbed' household alu foil (with double folded edges for some extra strength) as a windscreen or protection for inside-tent cooking.
The alu can be folded/reused many times and also quite small for packing.
I'm amazed when seeing people prepare meals with fresh ingredients, on a trangia burner, filet mignon in mushroom-pepper sauce and sautéed asparagus and all.
Usually at the end of the day, I'm famished, almost counting the minutes of my just hydrated meal and I have to tell myself to actually let it hydrate properly.
Still too much other stuff on my 'nice to have' hike gear list, to consider a titanium pot...
The Soto Amicus stove on Amazon shows at $48.95 (NOT $84.00, like the MSR, which, by the way has been reduced to $75.15, as of 01/10/2024) The Soto Windmaster stove (my personal favorite) shows at $64.99 (regular $69.99). I'll stick with my Windmaster; it has been a GREAT stove, with no problems, regarding the igniter!
Another GREAT video, Dan!!! Thanks for all you do and all you are! Happy Trails, my friend!
I absolutely agree with you, the wind master, is an incredible stove!
and if you choose the Triflex for Windmaster it is much lighter than Pocket Rocket Deluxe.
@@christophmichel3380 cool- I just bought the triflex also because it’s so much easier to pack in a pot can’t wait to try it
@russelljackman1413 is the windmaster same footprint? Making sure it fits in the toaks 750ml.
Try the lid from the Stanley cook kit! Yes, the lid is stainless, but it fits well and the weight difference is minimal. The strainer in the lid is far better than others. Granted, I do replace the plastic lid tab in the middle of the lid with a tiny keyring.
It’s not “Oregyn” just for Oregonians it’s just the correct way to say it😂
Hey Dan! Sorry to bum you out, but Soto came out with the titanium pots recently, and they’re THE lightest on the market. They also come with lids and a pot grabber. I know you were excited about your cookset, but you’re gonna have to replace it with this 😂
Too bad Soto doesn’t sell the lid as an accessory. Dan - why don’t you call them and suggest it.
Good news ! I believe they do now ! - Not sure if it's this particular model but they now sell the AeroLid (at least for the European market, can't say for the American one) :)
Yup can confirm, they sell the lid seperatly (at least in europe)
Hard anodized aluminum pots are frequently overlooked, which is a shame. They’re, as Dan just showed, right about the same weight, frequently cost less, and distribute heat better. That means if you cook in them, they’re less likely to burn your food. Part of that is your stove, but there’s a reason companies have been making hard anodized aluminum pots for decades and getting top dollar for them.
Great points! I’ve read they cook more evenly. It’s been so long since I’ve cooked food in them though!
No handles on the aluminum pot, not sure how much but they do weigh something
I’m a retired aerospace engineer. When I first saw the thermal conductivity of titanium I thought it was a typo, it’s so incredibly low. I found out that it’s such a poor conductor that it’s sometimes used as an insulator to cut down on heat flow between two parts
Aluminum is actually lighter than titanium and its a better heat conductor
i dont know why this companies are obsessed with titanium in this sort of stuff 🤷🏻♂️
Everyone knows the old adage about ounces, pounds and pain but at point there’s diminishing returns. Sometimes just having better food, gear or whatever just makes the experience better. I remember listening to a podcast discussing backpacking elk hunts and one of the guys was incredibly weight conscious to the point that all of his meals were drinkable in a protein shake mixer. Didn’t take a stove of any kind, he viewed it all as calories intake.
By the end of the 6 day hunt his partner who was telling the story says that he noticed the weight conscious guy was watching his every bite. Instead he had packed mountain house, instant potatoes, and even ramen noodles. Yeah, he had to carry all the extra weight but he felt better, slept better and had better emotional energy.
if buddy thinks he can save weight by drinking all his meals he needs a lesson in nutrition. that's pretty much the worst way to go.
Will the Soto lid fit the Toaks 550 mug? ... please be a yes 🙏
Oh man I got to laughing so hard when you asked Alexa a question about the 18 grams and at the same time I'm sitting here next to my Alexa and it heard you ask your Alexa and they both went off at the same time and was talking and saying the same thing, that was funny🤣. Great video
Same
Dan have you tried the Vargo Bot ? I have both sizes and it solved a lot of my issues you stated in your video. I’d love to know what you think.
Soto Windmaster >
