I agree. I love coming home after work to my kitten and an empty apartment, but lack of open space and windows would drive me nuts. My place isn’t even 500 sq ft but it isn’t cramped like this.

    • @rachelmaddowswife8713

@@fairlyagile The average American spends $200 a month on gas, significantly more than a subway pass. Plus you're also paying for car insurance, car repairs, and you know, the car itself. There's no way you're spending less on transportation than people in NYC. Yes, rents are high, but you can knock off a several hundred if you remember you aren't paying for a car. Typically heat and water are included in rent too, which is another large saving.

Today - they slice and dice the apartments - which make me feel claustrophic - even though I live 3,000 miles away. Horrible, mini-sized rooms, very narrow hallways and bathrooms --- with very high/unrealistic rents. NY is not the city it used to be. So my husband lived in NYC for 18 years before we got married and moved to FL. One of the reasons there aren’t a lot of emphasis on the kitchens is because there is so much food, especially coming from bodegas, that are so cheap, it’s actually cheaper to buy food than to prepare it, especially for a 1-2 person family. However, after COVID, there has been a spike in food costs and now would be a good time to have your own kitchen.
For reference: at this one local pizza shop in the Bronx, pre-COVID, large NY style pizza slice was $1.00, with a soda was $1.50. Now, JUST the slice, is $5.50.

New York City living is like a right of passage. Everyone should do it once for the experience, but it does get old rather quickly. It is a great fit for the young professional types straight out of college who have an abundance of energy that they need to burn off with the hustle and bustle of a large city (not to mention the entertainment and food!), but after a while your money is better invested in other locations (as well as your sanity).

I was born and raised in NYC and I love going through these comments cause while yes rent for the sq footage is up there, that's not what people are paying for. When you live in the city, the lifestyle is normally to spend almost no time at home really. You're paying for the fact that you walk outside your door to every type of cuisine possible and sometimes the best of it. Want cupcakes from France? Go downstairs. Wanna go to a club? 2 min walk. Relax in a garden? 1, 5 min stop on the train. Need to run errands? Get your hair done, buy a new outfit, and go see your doctor all on the same block. We even have huge office spaces filled with a bunch of couches and desks for people who "work from home". I'm over it and ready to get away from it for once for something slower but that's just some of the reasons people are willing to pay so much :)

I found a $2K renovated one bedroom in Washington Heights on the 30th floor of a doorman building with a private terrace. The deals are out there. You just have to look hard enough and be willing to go above 72nd Street. Honestly Washington Heights is where it's at, plenty of culture (I lived in the UWS but honestly got sick of living in a 90+% caucasian neighborhood and constantly being mistaken for somebody's nanny), great food, proximity to the bomb A train and did I mention the food?!

Here's what I've learned having lived in NYC for 20 years. If the internet didn't happen, I'd stay in NY forever. No one realized until the internet that there are even better places out there other than NY.
