Transient designer is on my wish
list, I have the vitaliser and love it,
the SPL stuff is amazing 🤩
It really is!
Older, multichannel version of transient designer can be had pretty affordable on Reverb every now and then.
@@Carsonchildersmusicnow Yeah, we have some great 2nd hands gear sites in Europe, mostly way cheaper than Reverb. I have my bid on model 9842 now, should be able to get it for 500 bucks. SPL still sells the 2 channel versions brand new for 449,- in their webshop 👌🏼
I have one sitting in my room waiting to get wired up. This video was an excellent primer. My only wish was, if there was an insert/return! But, for the level of flexibility and how top shelf it sounds, there really is no faulting it.
To me (and most others), 2149 € / $ 2199 IS quite expensive 😝
It is, but for how this sounds, feels, and looks, I would have expected it to be more
Might as well be a million to me. Took me 4 years to save up for a crown and I have dental insurance
Nah not when it comes to audio equipment 😂 I don't know how long you've been making music but for a CHANNEL STRIP this is a bargain lol
@@blazing6stringWhy are you torturing yourself watching videos like this? Recording is a more expensive habit than coke.
@@louderthangoddepends how often you do coke
Always had SPL Tools...( Vitalizer, Chanel One, Deeser,Transient Designer, etc.)...since roundabout 1995 ... and I would always highly recommended their gear ...very high build quality and sounds fantastic...
So so good!
If this was a stereo unit it would be a no Brainer at that price point
SPL make a stereo version!!!!
Yerh would by it to if they made that stereo
@@hiddenmaterial They did have a much cheaper mono version without the transient designer..
and also SPL Frontliner Modular Channel Strip that has a more capable compressor for about $800 less. The transient designer by itself is only $380 or so in 500 format
I'd just love to record a voice over through it 😁 I've had my eye on the Mk2 for a good while (either that or an Avalon 737), but the Mk3 is now the lead contender.
Impressive. This is 1 of the more affordable SPL hardware too
They got a mono thinner less premium version. I'm sure it lacks nothing at al. Maybe switches and obviously less i/o. Even their plugins are outstanding compared to any because they all have real MOJO and crazy configuration( negative ratios, weird sustain, attac and release,.) Their eqs are just magic man. You just need their bx plugs and you can mix away. Really dreamy characters. They just God man. (On gawd) 🎉
SPL stuff is nice, if you don't have to get it serviced in the US. Their official servicer is awful.
I've had a TD4 unit at the shop in Vegas for about 8 months now (to replace a potentiometer and a couple other components on one of the channels).
I only receive updates when I get frustrated enough to email them every couple of weeks. This is usually met with gaslighting about the tech not wanting to rush the fix, or pointing out that parts ship from Germany, etc.
8 months and counting. I'll never buy SPL again.
I think Clearmoutain would send high frequencies to another SSL channel and flip the phase, and use it to D-ess. Are there any plugins that work that way?
I want to run an 808 through it, just for the saturation and transient designer would be crazy. This is on my list for vocals I mainly track rnb and rap mostly and some pop.
Colt, Thanks for an expensive classy review. 😄 Can you please clarify if this is the standard Mk III or the Premium with the Lundhal I/O transformers? This is now on my shortlist for a new channel strip.
I have the same question. Is this the standard or premium?
I’m thinking this is the premium with transformers, as Colt’s rack gear link leads to the SPL Channel One MK3 premium at Sweetwater. I’d still like a confirmation from though.
Amazing stuff.
For a master processor, apart from what you mention about it not having a Bypass i also miss a SC filter and a Dry/Wet mixer
If you can stereo link 2 of these it MAY be pretty cool for mastering… idk, maybe if SPL sent me free stuff I’d be able to test it
If ''Recording Engineer'' is not toward the top in the audio portion of your bio then, yes, this unit might be worth over $2,000 to you. If, however, you do tend to focus upon the getting of sounds captured to some medium then, no, just f ing no, no way in any level of Dante's hell, just record the parts with the right clarity and dynamics in the beginning and don't try to fake it later by throwing way too much money at such a wanna be do all band-aid. There are much better mic pres, much better compressors, much better EQs, and many of them have inserts that, when paired with some patience to patch the order of components, will produce much better results. I can not, in any kind of faith, advise anyone to not just spend $3,000 or even $4,000 and get what they really need instead of a box that kinda sorta maybe gets them there. That unit does SPL no justice in the long run, it just makes them seem like other companies that do that ''Introductory Product Range'' bs where they jumble in a bunch of trial level features in hopes you'll come back for the fully expanded individual units. That's annoying at best.
One is for shure....SPL wons the Design price with this Unit....This looks very sexy
I love that you're reviewing more hardware. Keep going!
If I can make one request, MAN would I love seeing your take on their Crescendo mic pres. They’re a Grace/Millenia competitor as far as through a wire type clean mic pres but there’s next to no content about them ANYWHERE. Great video as always! And man a channel strip is on my list of things I want.. so you’re not helping my wallet here but I appreciate it.
the spl eq p + iron is magic for mastering. so is the massive passive + shadowhills or elysia
This sounds fantastic, but the problem is that, just one of this unit is not enough, at the same time its not practical to buy as many units as we need for serious mixing and summing. How can we be satisfied with just one unit ? 😊
Between this and the RND Newton, both similarly priced modern channels strips with saturation, which is prefered? Great video as always. Thank you.
See now between this and the last video, Colt has got me look at hardware.... thanks for that 😂
Your welcome 😜😂
Plugins are good but hardware is still the champion. It's best to have the correct tool for the job, sometimes it's a plugin sometimes it's hardware.
dude, thank you…i’ve been hoping for you to do a review on this unit 👍 and now to find a way to get a pair !😅!
But you got your Neve channel strip ? Do you need this one ? Feel I need a comparison 😂
They definitely do different things! I’ll likely do a comparison video in the future
They not going let him do that with a product they given him
I do what I want
@@ColtCapperrune how before we see neve vs spl strips
@@ColtCapperrune I really would love it if you did the comparison, Thanks for the vids!
Sounds expensive because it is expensive! May not not be for you big ballers who got bag. My opinion only.
What I don't understand is that song sounds better than half of the stuff I hear on the radio.
I love the face of this thing 😍
It looks sooo good!
@@ColtCapperrune Looks really good and I’m very amazed by the results you can get out of this one box!
For a price that this hardware comes, it feels like it's a steal! I mean if you compare it to other preamps or other individuals like blue tech tube compressor or LA - 2A. (only talking about price) In my opinion it is definitely worth it! Absolutely must! thanks for the review and for the understandable examples. Love your content!
SPL is amazing, I was blown away by their Vitalizer. Thank you for the video.
Wait this thing is only mono??? They don't make one for a mix bus In stereo?
😂😂 i used to trust you till u was trying to push that wa1b
Sounds like Lester! That tom section reminds me of Pillar 👊🏼🤘🏻
It’s Lester!! He did all drums and percussion and I played every other instrument 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Hi Colt! Thanks for the review. I love the recommendation that this would work best for pop/rap vocals which is my focus. I recently saw your review for the RND Newton channels and I really like them as well. They both seem great and similar price points. I mainly record with a U87ai. Do you have a preference for one over the other?
What do you think about two of them, and running synthesizers through them, as well, Colt? Synth bass, leads, and pads …
This is awesome and amazing ❤
If you had to pick one between the SPL and the Neve Newton channel strip which one would you keep?
There will probably be a video coming on just that. Both of them are versatile enough to use on everything… However, I think the Newton excels at rock, Americana, anything natural, and organic. While the channel one excels at anything more polished, pop, R&B, hip-hop, or any vocals, you would like to have that more poppy polish. I would happily take either, but since I have both this is likely how I’ll be using them.
Great Demo! I have not a lot of Outboard Gear, but 60% of that are SPL. On the US Market i didnt heard a lot if SPL. The Service is also incredible! I have the First ChannelOne Version. In the Verdion Mk3 it looks loke they combined all of thegood Stuff they developed since then.❤
Yo Colt - whats this song is it released?
Hey Colt, I'm a 23 year old mix engineer. I've stopped for nearly two years just to get myself together. Since i just got back in the game, i'm on the lookout for new gear, especially a channel strip for vocals! The genre i work with is mostly Hip Hop, although time to time i get the chance to record and mix some other genres. So i have a question: Would you prefer this unit over the Neve Newton, Tegeler VTRC, or even the Heritage Audio Britchannel? Or should i maybe wait for the Elysia Channex to drop? Any advice would be great! Thanks🙏🏻
considering getting an analog channel strip, was thinking an ams neve 1073spx paired w a warm audio wa1b. but this channel strip is gnarly i love the desser and transient designer. im mainly going to use this chain to record my vocals. i currently have an audio teknika at 4050. i def want to upgrade that later. which chain would you choose between both those choices? my genre of music is rnb, hip hop/ pop style vocals
Brilliant review! I’ve had the MKII since it came out and it’s been on every vocal since. SPL make fantastic gear. Tempted to upgrade just to have the transient designer onboard. Subscribed!
It sounds expensive because it is expensive - to the rest of us mortals this is way way above our Price range for one Channel strip.
Hi is it possible to connect the Neve Newton channel to other Channelstrip for example SPL channel one mk3?
There's something fun using a channel strip, even the less quality ones. This is lovely. I love using my cheap Presonus strips on acoustic guitar and bass. I like a more thicker sounding acoustic guitar. What you came up with is a little to bright for me 😉 thanks for this video brother
Thanks for watching!
Which preamps do you think are better? The SPL or the CAPI Heider? Or would they be used in different scenarios?
SPL always releases very good hardware. I owning Vitalizer MK-2T. This is also cool device :)
Damn just saw the deesser bit, it would be awesome to just have that module as a standalone. Such a cool way to handle sibilance 🤯 I was just checking this unit out the other day now there’s a good chance it’s making it on my list, but not a priority by any means as I have many ways to create “channel strips” in my current set up.
Does anyone make something like this for home audio not for recording but for playback?
Which mic would you recommend to pair it with for modern pop vocals?
How do you compare it to the rnd newton channel?
That thing does look incredible, eye candy for the studio for sure, that transient designer thing is sweet, I wonder if they make it in a 500 series by its self. I am already too invested in other units at my stage of the game.
Yeah, they should release the transient designer and the deesser as a 500 series unit. Maybe even in one unit..
I see there are 2 versions of this- a Premium model that has Lundahl input and output transformers, which ups the cost about another $280. I would probably go with the lower cost even though they are both above my price range. Or would it be a good investment to go with the Lundahl transformers?
Made in Germany.
SPL is so amazing. Love it!
Man I miss my Gainstation 1 too...
Hey Colt. Do you think there is any plugin equivalent to this piece of gear? or is it a must buy if I want those things
The sponsored product review videos you and similar channels are constantly doing are normally annoying. Admittedly, I am glad to know that this exist . I love how you keep using the word classy, all while the vocalist sounds like she is defending her Only Fans now that she is trying to settle down.
Man SPL makes the classiest looking gear. Sounds absolutely incredible in your demo too. Brillant video as ever Colt. Cheers!
Man this thing is nice! Totally gonna have my on it. Price isn't that bad.
Take a shot every time he says classy and shotgun 1 beer every time he says expensive
How is the audio being played into the unit? I am new to channel strips
GAS
So much GAS
This sounds incredible! Just curious, did you cut this with the Atlantis? (I’ve got one 😂) - and I’m shopping for a strip. This is ticking all the boxes! Hope all is good Colt!
I actually cut this vocal with the Eden. High pass two, Forward on the switches.
Well, it IS expensive.
It is, but given its sound, feel, and looks I would honestly expect it to be more expensive
Compared to what? Budget 250 dollar interfaces lol yes but this is literally a steal for a channel strip of that quality
I didn’t pay for this but you should!!!!! - colt capperune
Best This month LOL
The Sound samples start at 13:12
Great review Colt! Would you consider this a desert island channel strip? Thanks! 🙏
Id be hard pressed to think of a more comprehensive one?
Great video! SPL gear is really amazing!
Any idea how this compares with the Frontliner?
Sounds cheap actually. Very cheap.
So this is the version without the transformers?
You couldn’t get that from your two Newton channels?
In the future can you ask the company if you can do give aways for the products you review?
Please review the Drawmer 1977.
No linking for 2 units???
😂 yea bro and it costs expensive too
*This is a BS review*
This or shelford channel?
I think I'd go for this
And... another $2500 I don't have to spend. BLAH!
No freakin limiter..?
As a drummer, I don't like it when the sound engineer adds too much THUD to my snare drum. It starts to sound artificial and like a sample.
Other than that, I completely agree with your review and thank you for sharing your experience with this unit.
To amazing not to be crazy expensive. Let me go look it up. Over $2000. Actually worth it IMO.
Interesting channel strip, and yes, very much as ANYTHING by SPL, it's well built and the quality is obvious.
👌🏼
BUT - for this price, because it IS expensive, whatever you might say (and I find it sad how compared to their glorious past SPL lately seem to have jacked up their gear pricing logic in getting on the TH-cam bandwagon), IMHO there are several serious features seriously missing:
-variable high pass filter
-at least a couple of switchable "air band" frequencies (makes the eq an undefinedly targeted one trick pony as it is)
-master bypass all switch
-at least a couple fast/mid/slow attack & release switches for the compressor, Summit style
-some better form of two band de-essing metering than one tiny LED (and there even is space for it and also for the above mentioned compression switches in that empty circular faceplate space beneath the VU meter)
-separate or concentric pots for the high/low de-esser bands, just like they have both on their hardware and their plugin, as SPL's de-essing is, to those of us familiar with the company to the decades, just as legendary as their transient designer.
So... 🤷🏼♂️
Great review and now added to my must audition hardware list. Out of interest what vocal compressor are you using after the SPL?
Great review Colt,
SPL doesn't know how to fail, they just bring it every time!
Colt I'm feeling a MBT VS this CHANNEL ONE mk3 shootout...juss say'n
Damn.... Ive always wanted a 737... but this might be the go when I finally rebuild the studio....
I bought one the line in but sound mono :/ .. how can i fix this issues ?? Do i have make custom cable ?
Can I contact you to fixing this issue mr colt
Sounds expensive, IS expensive, but man... SPL looks sexy AF to me.
Impressive. Fun fact, I am a SPL endorser since the late 90s and I think, I own the most pimped Channel One first edition of the world.
😮😮😮 great day to work with this thing. I guess I am the last to know. But things come to you simetimes in a while. I absolutely thing that it is a fantastic stuff. 😅😅😅😊😮
Is it the one with lundhal transformer or without?
I bought this immediately after wacthing this video. lol.
How about as a line driver for the 500 preamp you promoted?
hopefully we get a comparison video between this and the Newton channel etc. seems to be top interest in modern strips
We love this new Channel strip from SPL and have one in our flagship studio A. We also have the Tracking channel in one of our other studios. SPL gear is amazing, we started with a speaker selector and now use and recommend a selection of the models here at Empire Melbourne. As well as the new Channel strips we also have 2 of the Crescendo 2 channel units and one of the 8ch Crescendo preamps. They all have huge dynamic range without distortion and are also so so quiet.
@@whome3911 we mainly use them for acoustic instruments and specific music genres where huge dynamic range is the thing like classical piano or guitar works, strings and Ochestra predominately where you want to go from very quiet to very ff loud without distortion or noise floor. The Channel Strip Mk3 might suit your singer-songwriter work more than the crescendos would. Are you in Melbourne? If so please give me a call at Empire, you can come in for a look at both, we also act as a retail supplier for both units along with many other brands.
I want one, but at $2500, I won't be getting one for a WHILE!
"Transient Designer" on vocal sounded good!
Who knew?
That air band definitely is something. Reminds me of the Vitalizer a little bit. SPL really keep bringing the heat
No disrespect but you keep saying EXPENSIVE it is obviously expensive. 😉
Yeah, but don't forget that this is not just one effect. This is a strip with 5 effects in it. Really good value.
Ordered a SPL Track One Mk III - can't wait to get it.
how are you liking it so far?
@@mixedbyedd It will become my daily channel strip.
Thanks Colt! People shouldn't sleep on SPL equipment, it doesn't work for every application, but when it does it's almost magical and EVERYTHING they make is extremely high quality. I don't own any of their hardware currently, but I've had a Transient Designer, Vitalizer, Tube Vitalizer, Mix Dream, De-esser, and Daw Interfaces from SPL in the past. They never disappoint. De-essers don't get much air time and are hardly as "sexy" as mic pres and compressors, but SPL makes the best hardware de-essers in the business. They also make some of the lowest noise, highest range mastering, mixing and monitoring hardware out there with their 120v audio rail technology. SPL's recording channels have been practically ignored by the US market, but maybe with its "Iron" compressor looks and enough youtube reviews, the Mk3 will be a best seller.
Correct! People should sleep on beds hahaha
I wonder if the premium version sound even better?
I can hear that even on a crappy iPad speaker ..nice
