I own the Shelford Channel and will most likely pick up another one. As great as it is, I still miss a 4th band on the EQ. The Newton is even more limited in the EQ section so I`ll pass for sure. With that said, I look for quality of build, and of course great sound which is what the Shelford is.
Cool! I'm using Carbon too. I managed to get it set up for Atmos with an additional focusrite 8 channel adat coverters/micpres, and relatively easy to switch back and forth to production stereo mode. 👍
My post from Gearspace... Well I just got my Newton and ...how can I say this... it is what they said it is. I dont own the Shelford but I don't think I need one more than I want one after getting the Newton. Everything, and I do mean everything sounds good thru it. The most shocking part of this equipment is the Compressor!! This hits waaay over its weight class and I would even say I don't NEEEED a CL1B now.. But Im probably still going to get one of those too. If anyone is complaining about what it doest have or do, just understand that this is a NEW from scratch channel done with modern technology and in my opinion it does not need to do what the shelford does because you can get the same results...just quicker... and cheaper. The Shelford is still a very impressive piece and If money was no object I would buy one just because. The sound is pure neve or not so Neve if you desire it with this thing and the EQ does not disappoint either. This could easily go on a desert Island list. I highly recommend this if your a 1073 fan or a Shelford fan and want the sound of both without the hefty price of both. I know I will get some hate for saying that but hey who cares as long as it does what I want it to do. It will leave your jaw dragging on the ground if you have any real talent or experience with high end gear like this.

The Red Silk on you voice👍 The sound you got the 2 mics on the kit👍👍 And that room mic on the guitar!!! WOW! Such a nicely tuned room, so I hope we get to hear that used again! Cheers!
Nice to see RND bringing out more gear and keeping not only the name and the business alive but keeping in the tradition of building quality gear. Sounds amazing and doesn't cost a fortune either. Thanks for the great review.
I LOVE Rupert Neve Design stuff. It's simply wonderful gear. Rupert said with his RND equipment (especially the console) he finally achieved what he was looking for. Also, even though Rupert is no longer with us in person, all is well with RND. He praised his team who still developes the gear so you know, even though Rupert is on a new journey, RND gear is in GREAT hands and will be around for a long time :) This makes me smile!
Great man, great company, great legacy and product line. Only downside is the cost of entry. It stings, but you get what you pay for. And the option to build a mini 5088 with smaller more affordable modules is fantastic. Fantastic ecosystem.
I could watch you demo high quality gear all day everyday. I have learned so much shit that I thought I'd never even understand because of this channel. Thanks again Warren, as usual, you always hit it out the park my man. PS, thanks a lot you dick, now I have to go spend 2 Grand I don't even have.....
I've said it about the Shelford and 511 preamps, and I'm going to say it again for the Newton: RND preamps pushed into pure saturation is a thing to behold. I'd put it right up there with the Manley Core series preamps in terms of very usable color. Also same for API 312's with drums, I don't like the API sustained saturated sound but it fattens up fast instruments like drums like nothing else. Great review Warren, I just picked this up specifically for a dedicated bass tracking channel.
Thanks for showing us the Neve pre-amp along with the Lauten Atlantis. I pulled the trigger on that mic. You were a huge influence on me getting it. I should have it early next week. I really hope it sounds good for me. I may pick up the Neve to go with it. I appreciate your help. I have an old Demeter VTMP-2a Tube mic- Pre-amp here to see how that sounds to begin with.
@@Producelikeapro Yeah, I looked everywhere and there is not one photo or video that I can see of the inside of the Lauten Atlantis so we can see what it looks like. Are all the parts and manufacturing done here in the US?
The new studio fits your vibe. The first acoustic guitar test immediately sounded like the 70’s British-American band America. Excellent analog recording from the past.
I really love the tonal versatility it offers. No need to buy an additional preamp for every kind or color or tone. This gets close enough to any kind of preamp tone I would want 90%of the time. I agree it's fantastic for electric guitar, but my favourite is what it did for the bass. Such a good piece of kit!
You’ve convinced me to buy this over the LA610, which I’ll probably still buy later. It’s that EQ and the electric guitars that really put this one over for me. Would love a proper vocal demo, a ribbon mic demo, and something like a C414 with Omni and figure of 8 demonstrations but you’ve already convinced me anyway. I’ll let you know after a few weeks testing.
Just bought 2 from Sweetwater Thanks for the demo! I don’t track drums often in my little studio setup (E drums and superior drummer at home) but as a guitarist first with a leaning towards classic rock to early metal And both male and female Vox talent I’m hoping to love these stacked for stereo
The newton is very good more than enough for most I would think, but to be honest I did return them and bought two Shelford channel strips They are shockingly good! After using decent to good pres like the 710 from Universal audio I can honestly say they were a game changer for me, They are costly as you know, twice the price of the Newton But for the first several months of use (until my ears and mind could adjust to the improvement) every time I would dime in a vocalist, acoustic guitar, horns pretty much anything I literally could not get the smile off of my face I would just be giggling Great vintage 1073ish to modern EQ they have the input transformer that the Newton does not and the diode compressor gives you more control especially ratio But to your question, I did use the Newtons long enough to realize they have a slightly more modern vibe, but still just a great box and yes I got that same smile! just that over-the-top professional feel Getting two of them for bus compression, recording stereo sources, parallel, processing, etc. I personally feel is crucial I would definitely work with the Newton again and be more than happy
@@gitarman666 Thanks for getting back to me, I have been going back and forth between getting the 1073 SPX, Newton or Shelford. I have decided to hold off and get the Shelford based on all the same points you spoke about. I do the the MBT on my 2 bus and adding the shelford is icing on the cake. I am also considering the 8801 channel strip which on the used market you can get for a bit over $2k.
Is the input transformer coupled? Are the voltage rails equivalent to the 500 series RND gear or the RND Shelford series? Are the EQ knobs detented? I’m assuming the compressor is not diode based. Is it?
Yep its much less than the Shelford...but this baby only has the output transformer (no input transformer). It's slightly less flexible in terms of eq and comp features compared to Shelford. However, it STILL sounds AMAZING, and the eq and comp is VERY useable and a great high end pre, eq, and comp at a really awesome price. You can do well with ANY RND gear...its the best out there.
By the way, I love that new desk with the built-in keyboard. Could you do a video about it? It’s the kind of desk that I have had in mind for a long time but not really seen anything advertised like it. ❤️ Love what you do.
I would really like you to do the same performance via the Audient console. This review is great. I do, however, see a wonderful opportunity for an additional show and tell here
I have two shelfords, 2 portico channel strips, 2 LA-610's. I sold all other pres and strips. I was going to add 2 britstrips by heritage or BAE pre / eq and get pairing with SSL bus +. Probably sell the LA-610's. From a quick listen these Newton's sound different than the Shelfords. I almost think these might be different flavor than sholfords and portico sounds. I see they are stripped down versions but the pre's also sound different? I think getting some flavor of 1073 and API would be nice. However for the same price as the Heritage Britstrip (which seems like a cheaper version of the shelford with a more 1073 pre sound) I should get these and some API's. How close are the pres to the shelford and is the Newton better quality than the Britstrip? Will the Britstrip be closer to the 1073 they are modeled after?
Thanks Marc! I loved how these Pres sound. I didn’t do a direct comparison to a Shelford, my gut is they are very similar. I’m thinking people are going to buy these a lot! Great entry pre/EQ/compressor and also a great way to get 8 channels for tracking drums!
I must pick one of these up (honestly might pick up 2 of them) so I can compare it with my beloved Portico II Channel! The fact that two of these is nearly the cost of one used Portico II is kinda a deal from RND.
@@ezrashanti I’ve talked to the guys at RND and they agree that the Portico II was such a fantastic piece of gear, most of them prefer it over the Shelford. And I agree with them! The 500 series don’t even compare to the Portico itself
Hi Warren, in tracking to your DAW, would you use this while recording or would you tend to record totally dry first and then send it back out through this Neve? Obviously if you record with EQ and compression on the way in, there’s no going back! Or would you just use this during recording as a subtle preamp so that it just fixes a few issues without really altering the sound drastically?
To piggyback off your beginners advice, I would definitely recommend recording your vocals thru the Newton instead of recording dry and then trying to set up a hardware insert and print it your results. That is the way it’s done in professional settings. Sorry if I over, explained, I was speaking as if you were a beginner.
@Producelikeapro hi Warren! This unit sounds amazing! What was that tiny Fender guitar amp set at for the Electric guitar?? I assumed very low, but then I heard the room mic and thought it must be a bit louder? Or, we’re there two different volumes on the amp for the video?
@@Producelikeapro ah ok! That tiny amp sounds huge! Thank you so much for your reply. Your channel and all of your content has always been fantastic. So appreciate your enthusiasm and the excellent information!
I am kind of curious how these units would sound on a full mix, and what the saturation would add to it, with or without all the tracks being processed with these units. Neve hardware opens up the high end, but the transformers certainly do so too. I think this could be a wonderfull hardware to give the mix a little bit mojo and spice it up a bit. the rest could be easily done in the box, but in my experience saturation is best on hardware. Digital transformer processing is never as great as the real thing. Since tape saturation isn't a thing for many people, getting some warmth and saturation from outboard gear is really making digital signasl sound good
Doesn't seem like the compressor can handle transients (acoustic guitar) and is more about keeping the level consistent. Nice unit. Love the pre and eq and the compressor seems best suited for vocals (not a bad thing)
Can you give me some advice? would love to see a video on this... I want to buy a pair of compressors and I only have enough money to do it once. call it a cap of $1000 per channel. i could go a bit above but prefer not to. I was planning on some 1176 clone but found the RND 543 and am thinking maybe its better to get a neve product over a clone. its cheaper than a wes audio mimas but i dont see anyone really talking about it.
I already have one and thinking of buying another unit in order to use them for mixbus duties ? Is it worth it … buying the RND MBT would be wayyy more expensive…
Fantastic Vid! We use my Lauten Atlantis all the time paired with an AMS 1073 DPX to UA1176 and I think your demo sounds phenomenal! I need more channel strips and this seems like a perfect affordable solution. May I ask what voicing setting did you use on the Atlantis for this video? "Forward" "Neutral" or "Gentle" . Thanks a bunch!
Goddamnit Warren clear your throat from time to time! I didnt know I had misophonia until now :D other than that great video, I loved the reverb of your new space and the electric sounded effortlessly classic. Cheers!
23:15. I was just thinking seconds before how Mary Had a Little Lamb would be perfect for that mic test. And i thought: i guess that would be my first instinct right? That makes sense because it isnt copyrighted. And then you started singing...wow...so coincidental man. I wonder if what you sang before, as short as it was, primed me for that song for some reason.
First video I've seen at least from Micheal's old digs. Nice. I'd suggest you pull the camera position back similar to what he did and the studio wouldn't look so cramped ;) As to New Neve, as always, so good!
So now my brain is sorting three Ruperts, all involved with production. I can picture them in my mind, but my brain is mixing up their last names. Interesting to hear this tactile.
I have issues with the pricing. They say it'll be around 2 k, which sounds good. But I do wonder how 2 k is possible for a unit that does Pre, EQ and Compressor all in one, without sacrificing something. One doesn't buy RPD if one wants to sacrifice anything, right? A simple Neve 1073SPX mono costs 1.789 €, the Neve 1081 Classic horizontal even costs 3999€. Both of these are PreAmp + EQ. So how come you can get most of that plus a compressor for 2k? Surely it must be a compromise of some sorts, right? Personally I will probably get the Neve 1081 once I can afford it (IF I can afford it one day). If they'd make a pure Pre-Amp for 700 Bucks that does the same thing as the '73 or '81 I'd buy it in two heartbeats. PS: The smaller version, the Neve 1073N Mono Mic Pre, EQ (no comp) costs 2059.
So much of the pricing is taking by casing etc. AS someone who's been involved in designing gear I can tell you that a case can be a HUGE part of it. So, it doesn't;t just get a certain percentage cheaper because a certain amount of gear is removed. What they've done is concentrate on the things that people use all the time and want. It sounds superb and I'm very impressed! That's all that matters to me, how it sounds!
@@Producelikeapro Thank you for providing your insight and a reason, Warren. I'm sure it sounds great. Whether it sounds just as great and has the same longevity as the more expensive versions is what I was wondering.
@@akagerhard I own a lot of mic pres and consoles! Haha I've owned them all, Neve, Rupert Neve, API, Telefunken, Calrec, CADAC, Quad, SSL and more, the list is endless! This is one of the best pres I've heard! I can only tell you based on that experience.
@@Producelikeapro I am taking your word for it, Warren. And once it is time to buy a coloring pre, I will remember your plea for the Newton Channel and read up whether it stood the test of time for the average little producer. By then I'm certain there will be a lot of user experience on it! Thanks again, your input is always highly appreciated and considered.
Stereo set of Shelford is nearer $7k to $8k so these are good value for ‘the basics’ and most used features. Pair of used P2Cs also much more at nearer $5 to $6k
I'm so happy we don't NEED these things today with DAWs Everyone can afford to record and produce music haha But good for those who can afford these things and have fun with it

I assumed very low, but then I heard the room mic and thought it must be a bit louder?
Or, we’re there two different volumes on the amp for the video?
It was my Fender Pro Junior and it was set around 2/3rds volume!
@@Producelikeapro ah ok! That tiny amp sounds huge!
Thank you so much for your reply. Your channel and all of your content has always been fantastic. So appreciate your enthusiasm and the excellent information!
As a Hip-Hop artist and engineer how does this unit compare to the Shelford? what is the difference in sonic quality?
Should I buy this channel strip or the 5221 pls help me
Would you recommend 2 of these for electric guitar? Or one is ok?
One is definitely ok! Two for the stereo bus or piano etc
I already have one and thinking of buying another unit in order to use them for mixbus duties ? Is it worth it … buying the RND MBT would be wayyy more expensive…
How much do I wish we had high quality sound on youtube !
Agreed. Most of our reviews come with downloable mutual tracks
This one I wanted to tweak as we went along
Maybe one Day...❤
Yes, it’s something I would aspire to after getting a basic interface with mic Pres built in
Fantastic Vid!
Just caught the part when you mention the mic was set flat. Was it set flat in all the examples? Thanks!
Yes, I keep it flat so you only hear the mic Pres EQ and colouration
Always set in neutral
@@Producelikeapro Thank you very much Warren! Wishing you the very best
@@Producelikeapro Fantastic! Thanks!

damn I am a sucker for neve Chanel strips. I have a pair of CIB pure paths and a pair of 8801's. I would love a pair of these new little buddies!
Another RND winner!!
Marvellous
@@Producelikeapro sounds great and at an extremely reasonable price!
@@steveg219 very well said!
Newton does not have transformers on the input the shelford does also one eq on the shelford has induction eq what the diffrence
Hi is it possible to connect the Neve Newton channel to other Channelstrip for example SPL channel one mk3?
Yes
Goddamnit Warren clear your throat from time to time! I didnt know I had misophonia until now :D other than that great video, I loved the reverb of your new space and the electric sounded effortlessly classic. Cheers!
23:15. I was just thinking seconds before how Mary Had a Little Lamb would be perfect for that mic test.
And i thought: i guess that would be my first instinct right? That makes sense because it isnt copyrighted. And then you started singing...wow...so coincidental man. I wonder if what you sang before, as short as it was, primed me for that song for some reason.
Trying to decide between one of these or a dual bae mpf. Need some help lol
Fixed 2:1 compression ratio?
Damn! Now i want one.
Marvellous! Thanks ever so much!
I want to know what Audient Mixer Warren is using?
I will be Doing a Full breakdown on it soon!

@@brentharmonmusicproduction Thanks ever so much!
How do you think this sounds compared to the Neve Portico stuff?
For me this is more my speed
My brain thinks this way, everything in line. Mic pre, Hpf, EQ into compression and then silk
@@Producelikeapro yes indeed! It seems so simple and logical this way. I’m impressed. Great presentation.
@@tombowman9463 thanks ever so much Tom!
Rupert Neve, Rupert Hines and ? Who is your third?
@@Producelikeapro It'll come to me. I've slept again.

Music studio is the only workplace that “abuse” means good thing. 😂 3:28
Haha no comment!
I was about to buy a Tubesessor until this dropped.

worth replacing the bae 1073 with the Newton Channel?

Haha it came out today! We will see in future
A stereo setup of these will still set you back almost $4000. I think I'll have to stick with my JHS Colour Box a while longer.
Yes, it’s a step up for someone getting into high quality external Mic Pres
@@Producelikeapro Yeah still on a hobby budget.
Stereo set of Shelford is nearer $7k to $8k so these are good value for ‘the basics’ and most used features. Pair of used P2Cs also much more at nearer $5 to $6k
