five-movement suite for solo piano by French impressionistic composer Maurice Ravel.
Here, the suite is masterfully played by Soviet pianist Sviatoslav Richter in Prage, Czech Republic as a part of a recital that took place on the 6th of February, 1965.

"Miroirs (French for "Mirrors") is a five-movement suite for solo piano written by French composer Maurice Ravel between 1904 and 1905. First performed by Ricardo Viñes in 1906, Miroirs contains five movements, each dedicated to a fellow member of the French avant-garde artist group Les Apaches. (a group of innovative young artists, poets, critics, and musicians referred to as Les Apaches or "hooligans").

"Oiseaux tristes" ("Sad Birds"). E♭ minor. Dedicated to Ricardo Viñes, this movement represents a lone bird whistling a sad tune, after which others join in. The rambunctious middle section is offset by a solemn cadenza which brings back the melancholy mood of the beginning.
STRUCTURE:
I. "Noctuelles" ("Moths"). D♭ major. Dedicated to Léon-Paul Fargue, Noctuelles is a highly chromatic work, maintaining a dark, nocturnal mood throughout. The middle section is calm with rich, chordal melodies, and the recapitulation takes place a fifth below the first entry.
II. "Oiseaux tristes" ("Sad Birds"). E♭ minor. Dedicated to Ricardo Viñes, this movement represents a lone bird whistling a sad tune, after which others join in. The rambunctious middle section is offset by a solemn cadenza which brings back the melancholy mood of the beginning.
III. "Une barque sur l'océan" (in English "A Boat on the Ocean"). F♯ minor. Written for Paul Sordes, the piece recounts a boat as it sails upon the waves of the ocean. Arpeggiated sections and sweeping melodies imitate the flow of ocean currents. It is the longest piece of the set, and the second-most technically difficult.
IV. "Alborada del gracioso" (Spanish: "The Jester's Aubade"). D minor - D major. Dedicated to Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi, Alborada is a technically challenging piece that incorporates Spanish musical themes into its complicated melodies.
V. "La vallée des cloches" ("The Valley of Bells"). C♯ minor. Dedicated to Maurice Delage, the piece evokes the sounds of various bells through its use of sonorous harmonies.

Also that echo-like sound he produces from 15:40 onwards is just brilliant. Makes me feel as if I was floating inside my own universe. This man is out of this world! Definitely one of the best recordings I have ever heard of this set.

Die kleine Mühe der EQ-
Einstellung lohnt sich....
Der Eintrag wird ergänzt, weil es sehr unterschiedliche EQ gibt. Er bezieht sich hier auf eine kostenlose *'Bass Booster App' 🎧 - ohne* das Zuschalten des BASS BOOST. Die meisten gehen heute mAn. mit Bluetooth in ihrem Gerät/Handy richtig um: Audio-Output Stereo, 'Advanced settings' überprüfen, *'Compatibility Mode'* der App und evtl 'Sound Field FLAT' oder 'Custom EQ' Ihrer Anlage (Den BBoost nicht - oder vorsichtig verwenden, falls man ihn nutzt): erstaunlich reiner Klang.
*EQ-Regelung* hat *nichts* direkt mit einer mgl. zugrunde liegenden Restauration zu tun. Sie wirkt aber wie eine Ohr'Brille' und kann (bei alten Aufnahmen fast stets) zu einem *schärferen* Höreindruck der Wiedergabe führen. Das Schöne ist, dass es ohne großen Aufwand erreicht wird. Wer die Musik vom Handy aus (Kopfhörer/Bluetooth) steuert, sollte damit keine Probleme haben. Intensität der Handy-BB-(EQ) App bitte weitgehend ausnützen; Gesamtlautstärke ggf. auf Ihrer externen Anlage korrigieren!
Es ist *NICHT LEICHT,* mittels eines EQ eine merkliche Besserung der Klangqualität antiker Aufnahmen zu finden. Hierzu gibt's *kein* Preset! Die angegebene Einstellung© hat hunderte Stunden meist kleiner Schritte der Verfeinerung erfordert (durch Abgleich vieler historischer Aufnahmen von ECaruso, Orgel, Violine, Klavier usw. usw. - mit WFurtwängler, ATatum, KRichter, ACortot, SFiorentino etc. etc), um alle Praxistests zu bestehen. Insofern ist nur eine *genaueste* ! Befolgung wirklich zielführend in "die 1. Reihe".

I have been sitting here, infront of the keyboard, for quite some time. I've genuinely tried and tried to find the right words to describe or give my insights to this piece and this recording; but here, the masterminds that are Ravel and Richter create such complex and meaningful images of beauty, melancholy and impressionism that all words simply fail. The way that Richter plays this piece, as if he is writing it on the spot as a fruit of his mind/a lightning of his storm, just baffles me. It seems that Richter and the piano are one. In addition, Richter's masterful technicality on the piano compliments perfectly his honest understanding of this music, it's emotions and it's purpose. I hope you all enjoy - I am proud to say that I have found a recording that can be my "desert island" one. Cannot help you to find any words to describe this performance:) Richter has always been my favorite pianist and absolute authority re: any interpretation of any piece of music. But haven't heard him performing this piece. Absolutely divine.

Would give a lot to see a video of him playing this, because watching his hands always adds additional dimention to the experience. I was 8 or 9 when I attended my first Richter concert ( in the 60's), had a seat facing keyboard, and ever since I get only keyboard side tickets to any piano performance of any artist.
A desert island recording. Richter may very well be the greatest in Ravel, and Debussy too. If only he had recorded the entire Gaspard de la Nuit.

Es difícil encontrar alguna interpretación del "Miroirs" de Ravel por un virtuoso. En pianistas menos dotados el "Miroirs" de Ravel se escucha más bien en balbuceos por la complicidad de la pieza. Pero Richter elabora un maravilloso trabajo, ligando las notas sin angustia y dejando ese halo de nostalgia cristalina propio de muchas de las piezas de Ravel; como "Gaspard de la nuit".
