    Nice to see Lima getting some attention. They made some good products over the years and were the only company in the 1970s/1980s (and beyond I would argue) that took modern image seriously. I really miss being able to buy new locos at such reasonable prices. Crude by today's standards of course but good enough for many modellers and notable for being tough, reliable and easy to work on. Not everything needs to be all-singing-and-dancing and mega expensive, there is definitely a place for simple and affordable.

      Hi Paul, they are not too bad for the money. There are nice boxed ones out there for around £30. What I like is the amount of liveries available. Cheers Rick

    I have quite a few Lima loco's Rick. The 37's do lack internal detail but make up for it on the outside 😀

    All great choices, Rick. I’ve only recently delved into learning about British locomotive classes and nomenclature. Fascinating, and happy to say I recognized your models and understood what you were talking about!cheers, Andrew 🇨🇦

    Great video again.
    People soetimes tend to look down on Lima but it actually was quite a good brand with a decent amount of models for every modeller.
    Perhaps not all that superbly detailed for some but in some cases they did better than other big brands and still decently priced.
    In some countries bigger department stores sold Lima products under their own name, a great way to get started in the hobby.
    The accessories were a class apart too, they had everything you could wish for and more.

      Hi Ed, I always liked the Lima models and they have proved to be very durable. It says it all that when Hornby bought Lima that they used the Lima moulds to replace some of Hornbys own. Thanks for watching Rick

    great video probably 95% off my locos are lima and have had them for over 40 years and they are still running wish lima were still around .like the the channel very informative

      Thanks Geoffrey, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, we try to find a balance between being fun and informative. One thing I love about Lima models is the massive loco variations they did due to the limited production runs they were able to do. Thanks for watching Rick.

    Your piece made me find the opening and credit sequence to "Get Carter" and watch it for the unpteenth time - my second favourite film after The Dambusters". I could probably recite the dialogue for both films from memory if I tried hard. The theme music for the pair of them are also classics
    Whoops - suppossed to be talking about trains - good choise of locos as well. Was "srandardisation " the word you were looking for?.

      Hi Richard, it's a true classic and I have got the soundtrack which fits the film perfectly. I would love to know which Deltic is in the opening titles. Standardisation was the word I was looking for, thank you. The Dambusters is another classic that never gets old. Thanks for watching Rick

    Yes my first Lima diesel was a western western renown paid £6.99p in Trent’s Reading in 1980 blimey ,you know Lina motors are so easy to maintain and made to run quieter OO bill has a tip by smoothing off the flash on the gear wheel makes a whole heap of difference ,saw 87005 racing through Willesden Junction it’s only 2miles to the north of me hear in W6 ,me and my brother would jump on a 220 and train spot there and the bus passed iron bridge on scrubs lane so we got off there my great late 😢 step dad would take us there nice memories now it’s the hitachi GWR depot former North Pole Eurostar depot and all Old Oak Common is a building site for HS2 etc skyscrapers everywhere there now I love progress but my memories have been bulldozed 😢😢

      Hi Mark, I've heard of the fix for the cogs but it was a long time ago and I've been meaning to try it on a loco. It wasn't 00Bill though, this was way before we started our channel when I first got back into model railways. I will have to hunt the channel out as it was pretty good. Nice to hear of your old adventures. Western Renown was one of my favourite models as a youngster and I have a photo of me running it as a kid somewhere. It was always a great runner and its replacement is just as good. Bobby says woof by the way! 🐕 All the best Rick

    Nice video. I'd include the class 20 in my list. Alongside the deltic they are my favourite diesels. The class 20 looks like a diesel version of a steam loco.....can and one end and a long "boiler" section. Always wondered if the designer was a big steam fan

    • @wellchuffedrailways

    Good to see some Lima locos. My Lima locos have all been reliable. If you get the class 52 Western bear in mind the one in sand livery has the wrong number. I still really like it though. Thanks for showing some great choices. Cheers Paul.

      @wellchuffedrailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul I have nearly bought the sand one on a couple of occasions and the seller did point out it's the wrong number. Not really bothered to be honest as it's a really nice livery. Hard to find a gold one though. All the best Rick.

    Hi Rick and Pauline, good to see a new video.
    One question, do all these models have this noisy typical Lima ring motor?
    Personally not a big diesel fan, I only have two BR blue class 40's from Hornby, these where originally LIMA molds, the only thing Hornby did was to retool the motor, and got rid of the ring motor, good improvement.
    They also come with DCC sound (the only models I have with a sound module, fun gadget, but in general too noisy for my taste)
    My two diesels are the part of my track cleaning train, as they pull track cleaning wagons.
    So when you see them going around it's maintenance time…
    Cheers, Danny

    • @wellchuffedrailways
      @wellchuffedrailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Danny, yes they do but the noise varies from loco to loco. The earlier models are quite for some reason. The noise can be reduced by filing some moulding bumps off the cogs. Personally I like the noise but it's not to everyone's taste including Pauline. I have a few retooled Hornby locos and the only difference seems to be the motors, pickups and couplings. All the best Rick

    The class 87 is electric, not diesel god get it right 🙄🤣 brilliant video as always you two! I got a Lima deltic thats silly smooth after giving the gears a good clean up of sprew and bits between the teeth, rebuilt it out of spares for a bargain
    Should also say, lima locos with the cab right up and square to the buffers like the 87, 47, 52 and such have cab interior inserts because of the motor bogie needing room, but on those models they're just fortunate to have room to interiors while the 37 would be an awkward squeeze.

    • @wellchuffedrailways
      @wellchuffedrailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol there always one😂😂 yes I was having this conversation about the cab detail and motor room with Pauline. So at least we agree on something. The earlier model seems to be quieter but to be honest I don't mind the noise so I won't be bothering tinkering with them. Cheers for watching Rick.

  • @russellbenton2987
    @russellbenton2987 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice one . People are a bit sniffy about Lima models but they did the job and shook Hornby up because they were a little bit less expensive . I still have 37/47 and 87 s which I run . The only downside is they are very noisy - but not noisier than my Bachmann 158 that I’ve bought new for £280 ! If only Lima were still around now we would be having low cost 68s and multiple units

    • @davidclough7346
      @davidclough7346 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nearly all my Lima diesels and electrics are quiet runners - mine are are second hand, but 2 are ex display and are a bit noisy. Suspect they just need running in and then a service. Very underrated by the purists but I've found them to be superb runners and crawlers.

    • @paulc9588
      @paulc9588 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. It's not just that Lima were cheaper than Hornby though, they had a more comprehensive range of modern image locos and modelled many smaller, less well-known classes that the steam-oriented competition did not bother with, e.g. 50, 73, 33, 26, 27, GWR Railcar etc. Also their mouldings tended to be better than Hornby's, many of which had become outdated and toylike even by 1980s standards. It is a testament to Lima tooling that some of the bodies are still offered in the Hornby Railroad range today, ~40 years on.

    • @russellbenton2987
      @russellbenton2987 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@paulc9588 yes . I have a Railroad 47 which still looks good , but with updated mechanism . This video dpurred me on yo have a look at my models . I had forgotten the Lima -09, 40, 60 ,66 and HST that I run along with 117 and I have a Hornby 101 that was originally Lima . So they were great suppliers of modern image at reasonable cost

    • @wellchuffedrailways
      @wellchuffedrailways  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I always found the Lima motors to be superior to the Hornby ringfield. Another issue with the Hornby diesel locos of the era is they had that annoying lean on them. Most of my diesels back in the day were Lima, Deltic, Western, 87 all very good models at the time. The fact that they are still running well all these years later means Lima did something right. Cheers Rick

    • @paulc9588
      @paulc9588 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wellchuffedrailways The Lima motors were better. They seemed to have more power and be less temperamental. Also Hornby motors tended to speed up dramatically as they warmed up (even the later China-made ringfield motors do it) which is really annoying re. control. The Lima ones did not do this nearly so much.

  • @ModelTrainOutsider
    @ModelTrainOutsider ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cool video, as always. When you pick your favorites, what weight do you give to each factor, if you could quantify it... running quality, livery, class, etc.? I don't think I could pick 4 favorites, although, I have some that are current favorites.

    • @wellchuffedrailways
      @wellchuffedrailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anthony, with me it's purely a gut thing and in some cases the memory the loco brings. All my Lima models ran quite similarly due to having the same motor. So it's not really a weighted decision more of an emotional thing. I will do Wrenn next and see what that brings. Cheers for watching Rick.

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wellchuffedrailways That's a brilliant answer. And I totally get it. Right now, this new little steamer I picked up has hit an emotional response because it seems like it is trying so hard to flex its muscles after not being used in 23 years and shaking off the cobwebs.
