How to fix a broken odometer and tripmeter on Volvo 740 or 940 replace the cogwheel

- If you got a instrumentpanel that the odometer and tripmeter have stopped working you can fix this by help from this Video guide.
Its common that a small cogwheel inside the speedometer dryed and break. This tiny cogwheel is easy to replace by follow this step by step guide.
You need to bend off the speedometers needle. Be very very carefull when you try to loosen this needle. When the needle is loosen its a piece of cake to replace this tiny gear.
This guide is most usefull if you are a owner of a Volvo 740 but there is some Volvo 940 that having the same problem.

I had issues with odometer and speedo not working.
By chance I had to replace the alternator belt.
On doing so the old, badly worn, stretched belt was replaced and properly tensioned with new one.
Thus the alternator was NOW turning properly and generating power properly.
EXIT all problems with speedo and odometer.
I had already purchased the gear wheels for the odometer and had researched the need for new capacitors for the speedo electronics and also the way to do the tasks.
BUT
that is all now not necessary.

Did for my Volvo 740GL. I only spent $40.00 for a new clogwheel in Hungary and did myself carefully to remove and install for free!

Min hastighetsmätare funkar inte heller i nuläget. Så om jag skulle byta ut den mot en annan som har ett annat miltal, är det möjligt att när man tagit bort nålen och "klisterlappen" att ändra på siffrorna så man får rätt miltal? Funkar det?
Bör man koppla ur batteriet innan man tar loss detta från bilen? Har iaf hört att det ev. kan komma upp felkoder i efterhand annars? Borde man koppla ur det?

min trip och vägmätare funkar inte som den ska ibland rör den sig jättesakta och annars inte men hastighetsmätaren fungerar som den ska vad är felet?
Bra video men hade det inte varit enklare att byta hela hastighets mätaren?
Hastighetsmätaren i den första panelen funkade inte..Däremot fanns det ett helt kugghjul i den..
I have a 760 Turbo, 1988, is the 740 & 760 the same regarding parts for the speedometer & odometer?.

Nice toturial 👍 But what was the symptom? Mine jumps to 80Km/h when I start UP, then behaves normally for a while, but if I pass the 180Km/h or drive for a while, all of the sudden it goes bananas, bouncing up and down for a while. And then it dies.
Next morning, same shit.
Is the needle just excited by the speeding? 🤣
And this Is the second cluster I use. After changing the ABS sensor and the speed sensor, it has the same symptoms.
Is it an electrical problem or what?

Passar dom kugghjulen från till exempel 240 till en 740? Eller finns de andra knep till att få tag i ett sånt till 740? Mvh
Tror inte dem passar från en 240 men vet inte detta 100%. Såg att dem hade sådana här kugghjul på Ebay.

När man sätter fast "nålen" ska den väll åka tillbaks till 0? Min är stum och går inte tbx. Själva hålet där nålen ska in verkar vara lite ihop tryckt så det kanske är kört?

Could be a soldering. Thats hard to find these small broken
solderings. I should replace the whole speedometer.
Is there a difference between 700 and 900 cogwheel? I need one for my 960 and there are loads of them for 850. Would they match here too?
Can you just swap the whole speedo over to the other cluster ?

I have the twitching problem and can't seem to find the issue. I wanted to ask you before completely opening the thing, and risking breaking the needle...

Yes it was not responding at all. I think in your case you need to replace the whole speedometer or find the problem and solder it.
@@VolvoswedenSe Thanks for your reply! The solders seem ok, and after further examination I can see without opening it entirely that it is not really the same speedometer as yours... The capacitors seem ok too, I read that it could be also the source of the problem. I guess I will need a new one...
I ended up putting everything back together after cleaning up, and now everything works... I am happy it works, but frustrated to not really know why ! Probably dust, although everything wasn't so dusty... Thanks !
@@annamoan2107 i did try clean one of my speedometer that worked randomly. It worked great a few days and then it stopped working again. Hopefully yours is working fine now :)
in my 940 i used 5w light and now i dont have any light in my cluster.

I think that the Volvo 940 series need the shorter lamps to fit the cluster...There is lamps that are not leds, they can stop working very easy..just replace them
i used the old lightbulb but in sted of 3w i used 5w and the lights to the temperature switch has no lights at all. i have replase all ofte fuses but stil no lights
Could be a bad connection with the ( Reostat ) in swedish..

När man sätter tillbaka "nålen" ska man använda lim? eller sitter den fast utan?
