  • We roll out a list of books that were/are considered failures from successful writers-and we don't care, since we will keep taking them into the bathtub anyway!
Critics know nothing! The bathtub knows all!
Teaser: A special annoying appearance by Dodo gets cut off by one of the cruelest things we've ever done on the bathtub. Don't let Grandma or the kids see this!

“Nobody truly sucks unless they’re good” is a new thing I learned from this edition, and I feel smarter for it!

VALIS gave me several Excedrin headaches but by the end I felt almost exhilarated. Counter-Clock World is wild. Too many plot threads (nothing new for PKD) so there's overload but I still found it thoroughly entertaining. Another of his that gets little recognition is We Can Build You. Recently re-read and it remains a favorite. As for books with a poor reputation, I'm partial to Hemingway's Across the River And Into The Trees. 40 years since I read it, though. Love the topic.

Yeah I thought about using ACROSS RIVER and TYO HAVE AND HAVE NOT or even ISLANDS IN STREAM and then forgot! But they fit the "criteria". I read WE CAN BUILD YOU when it came out in a sf magazine in the late sixties or so, it's a good one... s

Two second novels I'd love to read again: Something Happened by Heller and Fools Die by Puzo. And btw I loved all of PKD's early non s-f novels, especially the one about the guy trying to unload a shitload of typewriters all over north and central CA. thankyoumaskman

I must say I never finished any of Heller's novels but CATCH 22, but I heard Puzo was a pretty good novelist usually. As a kid, I must have read THE GODFATHER in a couple days straight...s

What you do is awesome, so difficult, just hold our attention without edit for ten or fifteen minutes. You deserve the Mark Twain award for that.

I couldn't waste people's time if there weren't so many nice intelligent people out there who wanted their time wasted! Thanks for the bathwater, Reagan/Junga!

This was a great idea, Mr. Bradfield. Really enjoyed your takes, not just on the novels, but on the writing life. Much appreciated. Cheers. Your little girl sure is bossy, btw.

Scott I don't know if Richard Yates is mentioned in part 2, but I have read that after Revolutionary Road , his subsequent books were not considered in the same league. I haven't read all of them, but Disturbing the Peace, the Easter Parade and Young Hearts Crying were outstanding. I thought his last book-Cold Spring Harbor- was kind of tepid but I will give it another chance.

@@dennisbento7440 you read my mind. I talk about Yates’s second novel in second half. I love all those late novels of his, esp. Cold Spring…s

Interesting video I,m reading my way through all of PKDs work but haven’t got to valis yet it’s always been viewed with mixed feelings I think. Sometimes you have to just stick with a book to really appreciate it, not just give up because you don’t understand it. But then again if it’s crap it’s crap . You can’t polish a turd.
