- We (and by that I mean the "royal we") take one of our oldest bathing buddies into the tub this week, the late great Iris Murdoch.
And include some brief thoughts on the best "recreational enhancements" to reading these long, slow, slowly absorbing novels. (Please don't tell Grandma and the kids! They'll be shocked!) - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
I hope your heart is very glad…you brighten all our days and gladden each heart. It’s so good to see you at 5K!!
These days I’m wandering thru A Temple of Texts by WM H Gass & attempting to distract myself from the world at
large. I’m getting better at distraction.
Love your work, Professor!

@@Linda-bq7eq thank you, Middle Linda! Remember, no matter how awful (awfuller) the world gets there will always be a place for you in the bathtub! Keep distracting! S
Thanks for reading the passage.
I just finished, 'A Word Child,' my first Murdoch novel. I enjoyed it but it brought back grim memories of the dreariness of the 1970s. The descriptions of the horrible meal combinations are worth the read alone. Thanks for bringing her to my attention.
Yeah when I first read her there was lots of the old London still around, before Euro and suddenly everything was bright and hopeful and the food was much, much better... except for the fry ups of course... s
I discovered Murdoch in the late 70s, around the time of my intro to John Hawkes so I tend to lump them together, but they're quite different. I read Murdoch with pleasure, especially The Sandcastle, The Sea The Sea, and Bruno's Dream. (Word Child is now on my list, thanks.) Hawkes proved to be more of a challenge.
That was a good period for her... I have to say I could never finish any Hawkes novel, which ones did you like? s
@@Scottmbradfield Never found a novel of his I'd call a complete success. A friend of mine exalted him so felt a duty to give him a good go, and it's tough going. I reacted most positively to The Passion Artist
Enjoyed the clip on Murdoch! Read The Bell and The Sacred and Profane Love Machine in college, but didn't appreciate them at the time. I was too busy wolfing down Ross McDonald and Raymond Chandler!
She's definitely a grown up way past college writer... I'm reading a Lew Archer vas we speak... s
I love slowing down with Murdoch’s writing. A fine antidote to the fast-paced, clickbait driven world we live in now. Have only read a couple of her novels, but I look forward to more. I am fond of dark comedy, and Murdoch seems to have her own distinct approach to this genre of literary fiction. Thanks for the video!
I think you're right. Reading her is a slow pleasure. I sometimes find her books get a bit lost in the last fifty pages or so but it may be my problem, not hers. Lovely descriptive paragraphs. s
Read Under the Net 55 yrs ago and if memory serves was top notch… should probably read further…
I should add I tippled my 1st tall G&T off the season tonight… and many more to follow in the wks ahead… a few bourbons too on occasion.
@@larrycarr4562 Martinis are better for the hot evenings than Manhattans, I need to make the switch... s
I confess to making a lousy martini…which is probably a good thing cause I love em… what’s your ratio 5…1 Frederick Brown says that…
Gummy bear chat-in show !
Great idea! But I can't advocate drug use or I'm not allowed to invite Grandma and the kids to come by. But we could have a cocktail party and everyone BYOW. (Bring Your Own Whatever.) You want to be in charge of baking the cake? s
oh, i adore Murdoch too...though I've never read Word Child....love The Bell, Black Prince, Severed Head, The Philosophers Pupil and of course The Tub, The Tub (this time I got the oxford comma in) .....btw, Scott have you ever read her husband John Bayley's beautiful memoir of Murdoch, Elegy for Iris....if not, PLEASE DO...heartbreaking and really imbued with love and honesty....and as a kid that majored in literature and philosophy, i can tell ya, a lovely edible (gummie for sure) helps her prose, at least my appreciation...and there is a lovely film about Murdoch staring Lady Helen dench (pre Bond)...i do recommend watching it with your wife....ok, all the best from up north, from your friendly friend from california now in canada, bb....be safe...
ps. i suspect Dodo and Lucky got into the gummies today......just an intuition...
I didn't read Bayley's memoir, but I did really enjoy the movie, and even if I hadn't, I always love Jim Broadbent. Take care, our friendly northern Californian! s
@@Scottmbradfield indeed...Broadbent's the best....
If this channel was called, "Word with Weed" where you read some Iris Murdoch or Harry Crews while on gummy bears then you'd have like 50,000 subscribers.
I think that's a great idea for a big-audience show! Unfortunately I'm stick by now in my small audience ways... (except of course for the gummy bears...) s
