J'avais besoin de cette vidéo. J'ai eu une leçon avec mon tuteur iTalki hier et je ne pouvais pas arrêter de traduire dans ma tête. Cette vidéo est juste à temps !

Actually, the thing that helped me a lot to start thinking in English, not in my native language (which is Russian btw) is that I downloaded an English dictionary (not the translator, u know, from Russian to English and vice versa) with the entire explanation only in English. At first it was a bit tricky, but now, for instance, when I'm learning a new word or just looking it up in the dictionary, it's way easier for me to extract and remember the meaning if the definition is given exclusively in English, not just one Russian equivalent. Thanks so much again though ☺️

It's been so difficult to keep up with someone speaking my target language since I translate it first before understanding it. It is just so frustrating! Thank you so much!!

9:07 that's right! One needs to use words looked up in a dictionary, if possible, right away. In a book I used to learn English with there were always exercises for reading with new words (something like "on the table", "under the table", "why did you buy a wooden table? - because...").
I think it's a must-do if you want to remember the word.
And I absolutely agree on importance of knowing how to describe things and how to ask about things. "How do we call a piece if furniture that stands on the floor and is used to place things on it. We have breakfast while sitting at it" and the like.
There's a well-known funny story about a foreigner at a Spanish café that asked a waiter questions like "how is that bird called (a rooster)", "how is his wife's called? (a hen [correct me if I'm wrong])", "what does a hen produce? (eggs)", "I would like to order two fried eggs!".
    Good luck!

This book sounds helpful. I am learning to be fluent in Spanish. Will it be helpful for me ? If yes, what is the name of the book ?

Wow I’m early! This is a such a helpful video. Even though I’m proficient in Japanese I end up trying to think English but speak Japanese and it becomes annoying. Plus I start French class again soon so this will definitely be helpful. Merci beaucoup ☺️

Well, one tip I can add is PRACTICE. I find it useful to comment your actions and thoughts. It corresponds with the Tip no. 6.
    You can comment anything.
For instance, going to a shop: "so I am at a Spanish store buy my summer school. I want to buy some snacks. This looks nice, it might be delicious. I don't know how to name this thing in Spanish. In English it's ****, in German it's named ********. It's a kind of a snack that is bad for your health but everyone still loves it. Let's look up this word in a dictionary... Aha, it's CHIPS!". And like that.
It can also be something not so ordinary. "Oh, gosh! This task had had to be done a week ago, now my boss is going to shout at me and freaking fire me. Here he is. He says bad words about me. He wonders what I mumble. He finds my way of practicing a foreign language at working hours deeply inappropriate and orders to stop it. He's stubborn and won't leave me alone. Yeah, dude, I dislike you, too. I just want my freaking money once a week. He also sit at the office all the week doing nothing, so he has no right to teach me how to live. Whoa, no violence. He screams and orders to kick me out. Relax, would you? It's just watching a new Netflix series. He would watch three episodes in a row, too". And so on. I think it might be fun, if used in reasonable margins.

I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process and communication skills in English and other languages.

Do you have any tips for learning an uncommon language and not being/living in an environment where anyone speaks the language that you’re learning and if you don’t have $ for a tutor?

What does it mean to think in a language? I don’t think in any language, I think in images and ideas like I’m watching a movie. I’m also having problems learning Portuguese. I’ve been studying for almost 7 years now and I can’t understand or converse yet. I can’t read yet either. I have to translate everything into English to understand. I’ve visited Brazil 18 times and I’ve been practicing every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese for over 3.5 years now but I still can’t understand what she’s saying without translating. Any ideas? Thanks

Mam, I know the meaning of all the words, but when I read a movie or a book, I start thinking in my mind. What does this mean, what does this mean, I have been learning English for 2 years but still do not know 5% English 😭😭😭😭 🥺🥺🙏🙏🙏
