I truly believe that in order to stop thinking in (English) we have to listen to a LOT and MORE, then a LOT MORE Spanish. If we try writing a short paragraph and reading it to our dogs, we will use our native phrasing and look up words to make Spanish equivalents. We can not create a new language from our own languages. We’ll just end up repeating “estoy hambre” in the mirror, then wondering why no one understands us.
Im currently watching a movie in Spanish but no subtitles. Im just really trying to expose myself to it, mainly to be able to understand what's being said. The native speaking is fast but the more vocabulary i learn, i do find myself gradually hearing words im familiar with. Ive heard a lot recently about comprehensive input, so im personally trying to apply that method as well, listening to audio and reading articles also.
I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process and communication skills in English and other languages.
Great message. Trying to dissect the Spanish language too much will drive you friggin CrAzY! Just let it go and your brain will naturally start to flow. It may not happen overnight, but it will happen -if you just get out of your own way. Remember: A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but it is also a terrible thing to pace.

I've noticed sometimes myself that when i try to translate a word. It doesn't always make me any wiser. For example. I was talking to a native spanish speaker on Tinder (believe it or not), and then she said this line: "Yo extraño la rutina del trabajo". I didn't know what "extraño" meant in this case. Google translate just tells you it means "strange" (which didn't help me understand). She then clarified that "extraño" can be used to say that you miss something. In this case, she misses her job.
Tengo hambre (Spanish), Ich habe hunger (German) both mean I have hunger. The sooner you realise that different languages have different sentence structures, the better.

It is not possible to think in the target language, at least not for beginners. Beginners need to think first in their native language and then translate word for word into the target language. That is because beginners have no other choice. Beginners will first learn individual, isolated words. Eventually they will learn sentences and expressions, but that happens much later. So beginners have no other choice other than direct or literal translation. They need to think in their native language and translate word for word into the target language. To ask beginners to think directly in the target language is impossible.
I have just discovered your channel and I'm loving your content. Thank you. This video strikes a chord with me, because I struggle with understanding the grammar rules. Many many people have told me "well, stop trying!" - which is part of your message here, but I have nevber understood how that can work. You suggest I remember the entire phrase "se me fue el tiempo" as meaning "time flew by" and stop asking "but why?!". Well, a couple of problems with that. (1) Any language will contain a potentially infinite number of phrases - memorising their meanings seems like an impossible task - and - (2) how to I construct my own phrases if I don't understand trhe grammar and have never seen the exact example I need? In fact, your own example - for "can I have a glass of water please" illustrates exactly this point. How can I make this phrase correctly if I don't understand the grammar? Clearly, direct word-for-word translation does not work - so then - HOW? Do I have to find an example so close to what I need that I can use it with a simple substitution? That means memorising very many examples. How will I know why "me voy..." means one thing but "yo voy" means another, unless I know that "me voy" means (loosely) "I am taking me away" - or more literally but less understandably "it is me that I go"? And, finally, what is wrong with learning the grammar? Well, it is hard - so there's that, and often "crazy" (like the clitic pronoun), but it seems to be it's the only way to go. So why am I hear bitching? Hehehehe well, it's been a long and hugely frustrating road for me. I'm very open to taking the shortcut if there is one - I just don't see how this one can work. (I come from a maths and computing background where "just roll with it" can't really work). So. The phrase "se me fue el tiempo" is confusing, in part, because it uses a clitic pronoun which is both required and redundant in Spanish (a concept I struggled to accept was a real thing - but it's true). It is saying SE (clitic direct object pronoun, standing for IT) ME (indirect object pronoun, standing for ME) FUE (preterite past tense of SER - so it means IT WENT) EL TIEMPO (the time) - so slightly less literally it means "It, to me went, the time" - and sliding into the Spanish vernacular a little more, it is taken to mean "For me, it was gone, the time" - and removing the clitic pronoun stuff - "the time was gone" -and finally polishing the metaphor "time flew". The "it" is redundant because it is specified later. In English, we seldom say "it went so fast - the time" - though it happens. More common is the more compact "the time went so fast" - eliminating the pointless pronoun but in Spanish -you can't do that (someone needs to pay for that - Hahahahaha). This stuff is BRUTAL and in my experience is not rigorously taught - or worse - it's taught plain wrong. This means the journey for me has been grim and I've nearly given up more than once. Anyway, this is too long and under-interesting perhaps, but perhaps some readers may find it helpful, comforting or amusing. And I welcome any comments you may have. I'm looking forward to learning a lot more from you. Each video I watch gives me some new things I didn't know before - thanks once more.
Hey! Thank you for your comment. As I said, it's a mindset thing. If you believe you need to understand every grammar rule to speak Spanish, your brain is going to focus on that idea. It's not impossible to memorize phrases, it's exactly what you do when you learn a language :) I learned English by myself, and I did study the grammar up to a certain point, but what I expose is based on my experience learning a second language. I’ve been studying Portuguese for almost 9 years now and I’ve visited Brazil 18 times but I still can’t read or converse and I have to translate everything into English to understand. I practice every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese and we’ve been practicing for over 5.5 years now but I still can’t understand her. The Portuguese words don’t mean anything to me until I translate them. I don’t think in any language. What does it mean to think in a language? Thanks

Unless you want to remain at a permanent beginner level, yes, you are going to have to get your hands dirty with the weird, confusing, nuanced bits of grammar, you can't avoid it forever and quite frankly if you don't learn it, you'll be limited to only phrases you know how to say (scripted memorized phrases) as opposed to CREATING new speech from the patterns you learned consciously and subconsciously. 2. You will not be thinking in intermediate to complex ideas in Spanish for a while people, don't be fooled into thinking there is some magic switch in your head you can flip on, and finally, 3. you will start to think in Spanish without anyone having to tell you, your brain will just.....start. Once you build enough vocab and a grammar base. Try just thinking in Spanish for the subjunctive and let me know how that goes in the beginning. I mean eventually, yes you will - because your brain recognizes the patterns. Not because you watched some YT video telling you to do so. Keep studying people.
