Solo motorcycle camping at a rustic campground - part 1

- I had no motorcycle riding experience but bought a motorcycle because I thought moto camping looked amazing. But I didn't really love my first motorcycle camping trip in a very busy state park. So I tried again, this time in a rustic campground, hoping for fewer people and more of the wilderness experience I prefer.
I went to Newaygo State Park in Michigan, about an hour away from where I live. While there was more wind than I would have hoped for, it's a lovely, scenic ride through farmland.
I had my first ride in rain - only a few sprinkles, and my first ride on a dirt road. I'm still a new motorcycle rider, so there are almost always "firsts" when I ride.
I show some of my gear and how it's packed onto the motorcycle.
Watch the video to see what I thought of my rustic motocamping trip.
I'm a new motorcycle rider. At the age of 54 I decided motorcycle camping looked amazing and I wanted to try it. The problem - I didn't know anything about motorcycles. I bought one, learned to ride it, took the MSF Basic Rider course, and am spending my summer camping and sightseeing on my motorcycle. The bike is a 2015 KTM 390 Duke.

What a lot of firsts thrown at you on your motorcycle! And everyone dealt with so calmly 😊
Some motorcycle hard or soft panniers will help the ride. Great to see you taking on the challenges
Thanks - I definitely need to get panniers soon!
Hey Donna,
Congrats on your many firsts.
Riding in the wind just sucks! I ride a big bike, but I still get pushed around by the wind. After 40 years of riding, I am still not comfortable in the wind.
You may want to tune into Adventure Rider Radio for a podcast with some great tips on moto camping. They just did a two part series with some world travelers, who gave lots of great tips.
You've got this.
Enjoy!
That's the thing about firsts - they only happen once. And every time I get through a "first" I get better, which I love! But yeah, the side winds get to me. I'll check out the podcast - thanks for the info!
I gotta know…what was on the playlist (that you didn’t listen to)?
