"What would they care if I did stay No one would know What would they care if I did stay No one should know". Mikael's voice singing those verses are just... FROM ANOTHER WORLD. Its so full of emotion. Its impossible to not get any emotional response to this. So beautiful! And the amazing thing is that the "emotional response" also happens in other tracks from the same album and even with other albums. For me, personally, there's no other band who can do that (at least not with me), of course there are many songs from other bands that I can get involved with emotions and such, but this is another level! It happens with EVERY Opeth album. Even the new ones (Heritage, Pale Communion). It would be such a pleasure meet every person who work/worked with Opeth and just say: THANK YOU!
To me this is the definition of perfection in contemporary music. The way the song flows, the way it progresses, it's worthy of being framed and put in a music manual for generations to come.
"The gleam of her eyes in that moment she knew..." Melinda... Opeth don't have lyrics, they simply have masterpiece poetry "amazing" is not enough to describe this beauty!
Whoa. I haven't heard this song in... nigh on ten years now. I'd forgotten how good it is. Very little music provokes a strong emotional response in me these days, but this really took me back to the days when I still gave a shit. Feels good, mang.
I don't care if what Mikael is singing about fits whatever emotions I'm feeling perfectly, but no matter what it is opeth always seems to fit the mood perfectly, I've never heard a band with as much emotion as them.
I agree with you Matthew. I got this first :) Blackwater is my second favorite. This song is SO FUCKING GOOD! The pictures in this video are fitting and beautiful. Well chosen!
One of my favorite songs of all time. I'll always aspire to write a solo and rhythm section that fits so well together and makes the solo stand out so emotionally.
Cheximus my MAYH felt darker, more raw, more emotional, more depressed. I mean, it's an album about being dead, yet still having to see everything that ever meant anything to you fall apart and fade away.
@ Matthew and Dan. I love both albums, and their melodies and arrangements are carved in my brain. To me the main point is that emotions seem more coherent and powerful in Still Life because they're conveyed always in the form of folk melodies and means. Blackwater Park extends their emotional palette beyond though, and their methods become (even) less conventional. So for me this is perfect in its stylistic framework, but BWP got beyond, and thus turned out "less perfect" :)
Could someone provide their interpretation of the first paragraph of the lyrics ("Marauder" through to "Handcarved death in stoneladen aisles"), as well as who is slyly smiling with a poisoned glare and why?
Cannot believe Michael doesn't know anything about music theory and stuff like that, for me it is a great bullshit, after you heard that amazing harmonies and the complexity of their riff (and music) it is very hard to believe him.
+Andy Drom Arjen j. Lucassen said the same thing, and it's hard for me to believe him too... yet, here they are, apparently just doing what to them sounds cool.
+Andy Drom It shouldn't be hard to believe at all. Great artists never conform to the restrictions imposed by formal education. They make great art instead of wasting their time learning technicalities. They're blessed with a good ear for music; they imbibe the scales and sounds from the music they listen to throughout their lives. The theory gets ingrained within their brains, they just don't know the terminology and nomenclature and shit. That stuff is for nerds and scholars and academicians, or classical music composers, perhaps.
It's a shame that Opeth aren't this good anymore. Heritage is a decent album, but it doesn't even begin to compare to their prog-death stuff. Pale Communion is just all-around disappointing imo.
Yeah, I still like their new stuff, but it definitely feels like a far cry from luminaries like this. It sucks because Akerfeldt should feel free to do whatever he wants now, but he also has an amazing fucking mind for metal and it's a shame he doesn't use it anymore.
Impossible to dislike this song.

Adax ! Glad somebody else feels like this too!
Mikael's clean vocals are so amazing, and his growling can actually be understood at times as opposed to guttural mumbling.
"The gleam of her eyes
in that moment she knew..."
Melinda...
Opeth don't have lyrics, they simply have masterpiece poetry
"amazing" is not enough to describe this beauty!
The way he growls "grasping for straws" gives me goosebumps. So damn evil sounding.
How fucking creative Opeth are! \m/
agree
1:40 one of the best riffs u can hear in your life

Searching my way to perplexion
In crumbling faith I saw her
Bearing her pain in the wilderness
The gleam of her eyes
In that moment she knew
OK, this is a contender for one of the best metal songs ever written. Maybe best song in general.
A buddy of mine told me about Opeth a few days ago and that has been hands down THE best suggestion any person has ever told me!! lol
1:50 jesus christ that remains to this day one of the best riffs I've ever heard in my life
Love those paintings, perfectly matches the vibe ❤
Clean vocal parts UH-MA-ZING
It amazes me how dynamic Mikael's voice is, so insane.
This band never stops being awesome.
One of the best songs I ever heard.. The first solo and the fade to the calm passage is just amazing

This is an amazing video. The sound quality, the lyrics, and especially the art!

The quality is excellent. Putting the lyrics n screen was also a good move. Keep up the good work.
Currently in a mental hospital listening to this, will rpely back when im out, tip if someone threatens you call the police dont get mad
Love the art!
Medieval Perfection lyrics show here, thanks Michael brother!
Wow what an amazing video, thanks. I love this album but I still prefer MAYH. Can't say exactly why. Maybe it just seems more raw and epic.

How many people are here for 'THAT riff'?
Opeth. Now that's some good shit.
Just noticed... at 7:02 the lyrics say "still brooding, shooting clam." LOL
It even says that in my cd booklet too. LOL
