LYRICS
Ghost of Mother
Lingering death
Ghost on Mother's bed
Black strands on the pillow
Contour of her health
Twisted face upon the head
Ghost of perdition
Stuck in her chest
A warning no one read
Tragic friendship
Called inside the fog
Pouring venom brew deceiving
Devil cracked the earthly shell
Foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said
"You have to live before you die young"
Devil cracked the earthly shell
Foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said
"You have to live before you die young"
Holding her down
Channeling darkness
Hemlock for the Gods
Fading resistance
Draining the weakness
Penetrating inner light
Road into the dark unaware
Winding ever higher
Darkness by her side
Spoke and passed her by
Dedicated hunter
Waits to pull us under
Rose up to it's call
In his arms she'd fall
Mother light received
A faithful servant's free
In time the hissing of her sanity
Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what is clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give?
Ghost of perdition
A saint's premotion's unclear
Keeper of holy hordes
Keeper of holy whores
To see a beloved son
In despair of what's to come
If one cut the source of the flow
And everything would change
Would conviction fall
In the shadow of the righteous
The phantasm of your mind
Might be calling you to go
Defying the forgotten morals
Where the victim is the prey
The way that Opeth can mix beautiful, mournful melodies, weeping progressions, death-summoning riffs, soulful vocals, vengeful growls, all with hints of jazz, classical, and metal just makes me realise how much can actually be done with music. These guys truly push the boundaries, and leave a damn rewarding masterpiece with every album they release. Opeth, what artists!
You crystalised what Opeth is, perfectly! Their music is a safe harbor from the simple pop pablum that currently rules the charts....
Yep, it's just brilliant and timeless.
And then, you look at all their association with Steven Wilson, and listen to any of his music and get your mind blown.
TheBigLucius That's amazing.
Pretty sure they are hip hop.
I genuinely think this is possiblely one of the best songs of all time
A lot of Opeth songs have that honour
its a great song, however its wayyyyy too niche to even be considered the greatest song ever. thats not a dig just stating facts my friend.
@@kevmccormick1767 Popularity is 100% irrelevant regarding the quality of a song
@@godfather53 when your talking about greatest song ever, how big a hit or how it's for everyone, instead of being very niche and only for a very small specific group, is relevant.
Its popularity or its relevance in the main stream has to be 1 of the main factors, otherwise we are just giving our singular personal opinion.
I will say this before I put my last little bit incase people get offended, I like this song, I'm not saying it's not good.
However if this is one of best songs ever, why is it still niche, why doesnt the majority of random people know the band and the song, infact I would even bet money on that if you showed this song to randoms on the street (not specifically a metal crowd) the majority would dislike it.
@@kevmccormick1767 You're a part of the problem why modern mainstream pop and hiphops garbage music will never change, why the music business will never change
The trendy listeners opinion is 100% irrelevant because they are not music fans. They just want a 3-4 minute song, no instruments, no musicality and just a simple catchy beat over and over again. The music business target 13-14 year olds to listen to mainstream music and are manipulating them to thinking that the most popular song is the best one
They know 13-14 year olds are usually the most insecure and that they do what everyone else in their age do, because they think it brings them status when in fact it's just insecurity/fear. The music business literally have psychologists helping them with this. This is why modern mainstream pop and hiphop songs all sound the same and a large majority of them are terrible
They do this because mainstream pop and hip hop songs are easy af to create, technology does almost all work for them. It's the fastest and easiest way for the music business to earn as much money as possible at a rapid speed. The business have to make their investors happy and mainstream pop/hiphop is the safest option, even though they make by far the worst music. As you can see, it's all about money
Metal requires much better musicians, superior songwriters, lyrical quality, much more complex songs, longer songs and album quality because they have to please metal fans and music fans in general that unlike the trend listeners actually know stuff about music
Again, the popularity of a song is 100% irrelevant. Pop and hiphop are just cash grab genres and just there to sell, not making as good music as possible like other genres do
If this song had to get mainstream, Opeth would've had to make this song a lot worse. They would have to cut the song short, drop the instrumental/music quality a ton, delete all complexity in the song and make it easier, a catchy beat wich doesn't require anywhere near the skill of what they do and destroy the lyrical quality. It's the only way to please the trend listeners, they would have to change from art to a cash grab song, wich would destroy all the quality of the music
Opeth, Tool, Mastodon, Gojira, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, Between the Buried and Me, The Ocean...what a time to be alive and experience these bands creative careers. These are the modern "classical music" geniuses.
Imagine living during the age of exploration and miss this masterpieces.
Also Haken, Dream Theater, Karnivool, Katatonia, Leprous, Caligula‘s Horse, The Mars Volta, King Gizzard, Faith No More, Mother’s Cake, Pineapple Thief, Riverside, Black Midi, Bent Knee, Snarky Puppy, Animals as Leaders, De Staat, Heilung, System of A Down, Muse, Ghost…

There is something about acoustic guitars in metal songs that just makes it evil and badass.

you mean of a the grandpa's guitars?
God-damned right they do.

Agreed! I would totally be into a purely acoustic metal band too
The "DARK-NESS-BY-HER-SIDE" section is seriously the most hype thing i've ever heard in music. I like every Opeth album, but this one takes the gold for me.

Tightest production I've ever heard on a metal record. Everything is fucking flawless
Jens Bogren is a genius, I love his production as much as Steven Wilson's.
Arran Cook The drums are especially well recorded on this album. Never heard anything so intense.

Okay... Opeth is fucking amazing...
Yeah, I've come to realize that as well.
Was..

yeah, sorceress is somehow meh... :/
JizzDéche Krachamerdier Used to be amazing. Now they're just a boring-arse pseudo Jethro Tull cover band. From Orchid up to Ghost Reveries they were ace, now this straight up prog rock direction leaves me cold.
The way they can mold these acoustic lines with the heavy growling and guitar riffs into the same song is what really impresses me about Opeth.
And the way they change melodic lines and riffs in just one song...
Its what got me into them all those years ago.
That's progressive metal for you!
Opeth have produced some truly incredible stuff over the years but, for me, nothing has ever topped this song. This is the pinnacle of their musical achievements. The first time I played this album, I couldn't actually go beyond this track for about two days, I was so blown away by it. Just beautifully, intricately woven pieces of soft and brutal sections, so expertly arranged. An extraordinary piece of work.
same thing with me. I've listened to their latest dvd garden of titans, i've NEVER HEARD them before. The first tracks were pretty much classic prog, but they hooked me. Then THIS BANGER CAME OUT, I love mikael's growls, I just cant get over how perfect this song is! Everything is so well placed in this masterpiece that I can literally listen 4 times straight! This band made this shitty year worth it
I feel the same with their morningrise album
@Raul Ramirez no still life? Moonlapse vertigo is my all time favorite opeth song. Otherwise I agree with you
Listen to older Opeth songs bro and you'll change your mind easily
Bro need to listen to Orchid
6:26 that fading growl is so damn perfect
The first time I listened to this song was the first time a song gave me chills and goosebumps. Literally. I had and since have heard some pretty sick and haunting growls but this tops everything else for me. The way Opeth have set the tone for this song makes the difference. Nothing feels forced.
I fucking love that part, it's like preceding the amazing growling vocals
6:28 to 7:00 is top 5 riffs ever
I like to lay in bed with all of the lights off, volume all the way up in my headphones and just feel the music
Mikaels growls haunt me in the darkness, but in a beautiful way.
the proper way to experiance Opeth
same way i do bro
dont forget while smoking, I literally can then listen to it in a completely different way, amazing way
just take care about the volume, so you can do that for as long as you'd like...
"for as long as you'd like" i said...
the VOLUME!
BEN! I SAID TAKE CARE ABOUT THE VOOLUUME!...
oh, Ben..
Its a shame this is a song most people would overlook because of the initial growling, and dark heavy riffs. If only people could see this song and the band for what they really are. This song is unlike any Prog death metal song i have ever heard, the melodys do so well in complimenting the darker side of the song. A near master piece in its genre, Opeth is truly one of those names i will remember when no one else wanted to
I was initally put off by the growling in general but I somehow stuck with listening to this band cause the music made up for all of it and I'm so glad i stayed cause now I love growling and can equally enjoy their brutal and softer side
Growling is the best part of it in my opinion
You're spot on. I am a huge prog metal fan. And when I first stumbled upon Opeth, this was the first song I heard. I literally didn't even know what I was hearing. It was like I didn't know what to call it at first. Of course, 1000 plays later, Opeth is life. They create an atmosphere that goes beyond their music. I only know a few other prog metal artists that actually do this (Gojira, Between The Buried & Me), but Mikael seems to have figured out how to do that while smoothly blending practically every musical genre into each other, including different metal subgenres. Blows my brains away.
@@jmcsquared18 Mikael is a genius, there are a few clips here on TH-cam where he talks music. His taste is literally so diverse its crazy
Listening to it for the first time, I enjoy the song itself, but am highly put off by the growls. An acquired taste I suppose?
When I introduce or speak about growling to anybody, I tell them to listen to Mikael, as a benchmark. His growls are unparalleled, as is Opeth's music and its variety.
It is all opinion based, for growls, I prefer Tomas from Wolfheart. They go a little lower then Mikael. Like i said, all personal preference
I'm looking forward to you, at SL1.

As cool as the heavy parts are, I adore the calmer, more eerie parts with the acoustic guitar. Super haunting.
Hard to compete with 6:25 though
Then listen to their Damnation album. fully acoustic
you are not to blame as these acoustic sections are easily some of the best moments in the history of music and definitely have more personality than most of the song
The acoustic parts wouldn't be so haunting without the heavy ones. That's why I trust Opeth. Do whatever you want, I'll listen
I’m saying it:
Mikael has my favorite growls to any band I have ever listened to. It’s hard for me to listen to anyone else do it because:
1. How good they sound.
2. How it fits the themes of the song.
3. You can understand what he is saying.
Plus it just sounds a whole lot cooler when you mix the clean vocals in with them. There really isn’t any other band with growls I enjoy nearly as much as Mr. Åkerfeldt.
Fully agree with you
Hell yeah
Truth said. It doesn't sound like he's putting effort on it. It's like his voice is just like that.
its really hard to describe. its rhythmically ominous if that makes any sense.. his timing on entering the melody is so chilling. i love it

Can anyone make a 10 hours version of that "winding ever higheeeer aaaa haaaa haaaa aaa haaa ya ya de de du" part ?

This song is by far my favorite so far, also heard another good heavy song, I beleive it was called "the great conjuration" if im not mistaken. Only heard it once though.
Got any good heavy song recommendations?
Its not that I dont like the softer ones, like "burden" is great, but nothing beats a song like this!
Yeah this happens to be my favorite song as well. Some other great songs by them are deliverance, the leper affinity, masters apprentices, the moor, serenity painted death, bleak, demon of the fall and reverie/harlequin forest. You should also check out in my time of need. It is a soft song and I know you asked for heavy ones but it's just amazing. It's even better than burden and it easily ranks into my top 5 favorite songs by them.
Mourningrise375 Porcelain Heart is probably my favorite. Mainly bc its the first I ever heard from Opeth, but that, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhh Ahhhhhhhhhhhhah Ahhhhhh!" gives me fucking goosebumps every time lol. Fucking love Opeth! They are coming to my town on Dec. 5. Definitely going!

this piece is dam near classical music in all honesty.
Beautiful themes and Brutish riffs always contrasting each other. love it.
totally agree with you , i had thought just that whilst playing all their stuff over a six week drive around Europe ( on tour with Katy Perry ffs)
Yes, that is the very definition of progressive rock. Rock elevated to the point of near classical complexity. It seems almost insulting to call this a song, it's a composition.

It's just my opinion fellows, I am 22 and so opeth represent a much needed modern wave of music that is missed in this seemingly generic age of music. listened to this for the first time while replaying saints row 2 the other day and i had to stop driving and turn the in game music volume up for this masterpiece. i’ve had this on repeat since lmao
Never stop lol
@@yaroubthayer-752 i’ve listened to almost every opeth album since i posted this 10/10 band definitely one of my top favs now
@@xp1997 Love to hear it! There are plenty of singles and other collaborative works to be enjoyed in their catalog as well.
the best composers of the last 10 years
This is literally a masterpiece, the composition, the transitions, the world class playing of each instrument is just incredible. Even just the drums and bass are fascinating, let alone the guitar work.
4:07 I always hear this part as like it could've been an ending, then you just get absolutely pummeled with all the madness and beauty that follows! Sorry, had to write all this lol 🔥
6:59 - 8:18 best transition of this song love that ryhme's
6:28 > 6:58 It's been my phone ring tone since forever, can't simply change it, the face people do when someone is calling... well it's priceless :)
Nice, it's really brutiful
You can air-justabouteverything to this track. Air drumming makes my neck and knees hurt tho...I'm getting too old...
This is the perfect song to get you out of a bad mood or a slump. Starts off aggressive, gets your blood pumping, has a mellow, acoustic interlude, to let you breathe after releasing some of the pent up energy you might have had, picks back up again and builds up until about 7:38 where it sets in motion the ending (to me the best part of the song - tho it's excellent in its entirety), that concludes on a high note, in my opinion, and revitalizes your energies.
Shakes you up, dusts you off, hands you some water and sends you on your way. Whenever I feel like crap and have work to do, I listen to this song and I'm ready to go. It's incredible.
I do agree it helps release some tensions and anger but I’m my experience I would say blackwater park the song does it better so does bleak
@@metalsucks9 Blackwater is good but perhaps a bit overrated. Doesn't get heavy until over 6 minutes in.
@@jasonashley9853 not really, black water park leads off with a pretty brutal riff, then proceeds to growl for the entire song.
When the drummer switches from the ride cymbal to open hi-hat at around 8:48, the song peaks for me and my mind just enters a different world. It's such a small detail in the song, but it just completely changes the song for me!
1:52 - 2:03 Opeth just has the most intricate, medieval sounding riffs I have ever heard
There are few things in this world that capture my whole attention for 10 minutes and 29 seconds, this is one of them.
