You should try the advanced trajectory mod, you have a aiming reticle showing the spread of your shots and if there is a giant horde in front of you it's impossible to not hit anything unlike in vanilla. The only downside is that shotguns aren't as powerful since they can't hit zombies that are behind other zombies because the ones in front tank the shots. Although if you wanted you could increase the number of pellets from 5 to like 100 lol.

I grabbed a police car, went to the prison and drew them all out with the sirens. Took damn near 3 in game days but I made it, relatively cleared out. There were no guns, but I got away with a bus and fbi rv
Me and my friends goes to the prison, we were newbie too, and we were so happy when we found guns and weapons, so without hesitation we goin deeper, one of us said "theres 5 of us, what could be bad?" then suddenly we heard the door banging but we just ignore it and goes further coz we thought we could get away and suddenly theres a horde of Z waiting infront of us and when we backing up, the door brokes and another horde rush out so we trap,so we had no choice but to fight, it wad completely chaos and panic after one of us got bitten and we all try to run away but the zombies were too many killing us all in the prison it was completely sad beginning of the story...
My voice isn't in this clip so it might be hard to see there are three of us. The one you hear yell "Open the door!" made it out right when he said that. Our third member gets swarmed immediately. You can see him get trapped in the bottom corner as I am weaving through the crowd.
