SCTV never got the recognition that it deserved, IMO. The writing and the performances were first rate especially on the limited budget that it had. Some amazing comedy.
The way Tony Rosato as Danny Thomas just strolls in on Bittman's second attempt of his routine was hilarious. Amazing TV. I loved it then and it's just as funny now.
Not just Mr. Show Business, if I may say. In all seriousness, A man like Sammy Maudlin. . . . This man, Sammy, is one of the finest, I really mean it, one of the finest men in show business. A real humanitarian who'd give you the shirt off my back. He never gets credit for that.
@@ROGER2095 Bobby, I just want to say, that goes double ditto from me. We go back a long way my friend, and nobody has done more to bring laughter and tears to my show than Funnyman Bobby Bittman. I think William B here will bear me out on that.
Dave Thomas doing Bob Hope is the best, Joe Flaherty was a core member of SCTV that made it so funny, his characters were always a riot, John Candy and Flaherty's Farm Film Celebrity Blow-up always made me laugh!!!!
“Thanks for the Memories” was my Mom and Dad’s high school 1951 graduating class’s song. My Dad was tasked with writing to Bob Hope to request he come to the school and sing it in person. They never got a return message. I had forgotten all about that story until I heard the song on this skit.
@@vestibulate Yes, so sad. I actually saw him on the Toronto subway maybe five years before he died. I was in a stressed-out headspace at the time, coming home from a toxic workplace. But when I looked at Tony, I realized I could fix my situation, whereas he looked like a permanently broken man...as sad and unhappy as can be. RIP Tony
What makes it more hilarious is how upset Bittman was that Bob crashed his bit. Doesn’t Bittman realize how many times he’s crashed Sammy’s show? He’s always interrupting Sammy. “I was taping a special across the hall I had to stop and say hi”. Bittman made Mother Teresa move over to another seat when he crashed Sammy’s show. So great! 😅
So much to love: Sammy’s knee-slapping, Bobby’s utterly joke-free prop comedy, his obsequious fealty mixed with instant and barely disguised seething rage at being upstaged by Bob Hope, Hope’s writer muttering around his cigar…
I imagine a youngster of 35 would look at this and wonder why it's funny. From someone who watched tv from the 1960s to the 2000s this show was a terrific spoof of that era. Thanks for this post, I thought I saw every show many times over, but I don't recall this gem....
IRL Bob Hope was already in his 80s when this aired and he had outlived most of his audience by 15 years. If not for Dave Thomas, I wonder if anybody would even remember who he was now.
You do realize that both Bobby Bitman and Sammy Maudlin are both takes on the real Sammy Davis Jr. The Bitman bit is pretty obvious, but I think many people don't realize that Davis had a local talk show that didn't last too long, but while it was on, he became infamous for over-laughing (if that's a word) at almost anything anyone said that was supposed to be remotely funny. I'm sure no one in Canada catches the Sammy Maudlin take on that, and probably fewer U.S. citizens. But it always cracked me up.
@@SwingingInTheHood that’s true. Interesting observation. I’m Canadian, but never thought of it that way. Like a 2 for one deal but in reverse. Davis Jr. was a gold mine for impersonations. Would love to see clips from that failed show…. 👍
This show is often cited as proof of how brilliant TV used to be but if it weren't for the tons of cheesy crap they lampooned it couldn't have happened.

Benny’s not topical.
Dave Thomas as Bob Hope is scary great. This whole cast was packed with talent. Just an amazing show.
He laughs like Kamala Harris
I had a new favorite performer every week. They were all that good.
I swear no one could crack Hope as an impression until Thomas came along.
SCTV never got the recognition that it deserved, IMO. The writing and the performances were first rate especially on the limited budget that it had. Some amazing comedy.
It wasn't just Canada's counterpart to NYC's SNL, it was a comedy phenomenon that equals the best of both SNL and Monty Python.
@@Devilsblood very well said. I’m kinda glad it never took off in the states. NBC would have surely ruined it….
Far better then both by miles
Much better than SNL on a consistent basis. The parodies were over the top.
Eugene Levy caught every detail of Rat Pack schtick -- that left hand flopping with the weight of the rings, that's Sammy Davis . . . just amazing.
RIP Joe Flaherty.
Sammy's knee-slapping.... hilarious!
I know, right?
P.S. at 0:24, he kinda looks like Queen guitarist Brian May, don't ya think?
Sammy Davis Jr. would do the same thing on his variety show. He was clearly the inspiration for Sammy Maudlin.🤣
I suffered through many boring SNLs to get to SCTV. Best schtick-n-cheese ever. Almost all of it improv, right off the top of their heads.
Dave Thomas - nailed Bob Hope to a T - so reminiscent of Hope barging in on Carson 😄
The way Tony Rosato as Danny Thomas just strolls in on Bittman's second attempt of his routine was hilarious. Amazing TV. I loved it then and it's just as funny now.
Tony Rosato + Eugene Levy do a great routine as Abbott and Costello. Tony plays Costello + is terrific.
Sammy Maudlin was the greatest entertainer who ever lived. He was Mr. Show Business.
Sammy had it all. And then- what went wrong? There's a Movie of the Week waiting to be born.

Sammy slapping his knees is the best!
Thanks for the post. I’m down a rat hole on SCTV. I never realized the Krusty the Clown laugh was from this bit.
Bobby and Bozo had equal shares in Krusty
This show was above and beyond for their day, and still holds up. Great parodies and a ton of satire.
This show has me rolling.

Bob Hope pitching his banal jokes through a Chinese interpreter...... Inspired. Perfect.
I'm sorry, Mr. Bitman. I have a call from George Burns on the other line.
I thought Bobby and Hope would reminisce about their USO tour. I believe Lola Heatherton, and William B. Williams were on the junket too.
Gimme a C, a bouncy C.
The original "Larry Sanders" Show. This was the best skit in SCTV history. Later John Candy would play the Ed McMahon role. Just pure GENIUS
One of my favourite SCTV moments. RIP Joe Flaherty and Tony Rosato.

Seems Bobby has trouble getting booked except on the Sammy Maudlin show. In fact every episode features the "comic in all seriousness".

The people who appreciated the humor understood quite well the roots of the parody.
The younger Bob in his early movies (pre 1950) was very funny. These are on streaming and some on YT.
@@barryobrien7935 definitely. Virtually all of his movies pre-1950 are at least good and some are really excellent.
