You don't really understand how old this is until you realize that the Beaver would have already served his 35 year sentence and would have been released 3 years ago.
More with good behavior. But this skit was prophetic. Not to long after, they did a "Leave it to Beaver reunion special" for years. And it was just about as sad as this. And Beaver was just as overweight. Later,, The Disney Channeled picked up a new LITB sit come, but they seemed to intentionally be writing Beaver out of the scripts.
I also don’t think the Millennials and Zoomers have much pull, with The Emmy’s, of which Schitt’s Creek won NINE(!) of those awards, including Outstanding Comedy, Best Actor, Best Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Outstanding Comedy Screenwriting, and Outstanding Comedy Director. I’m not being a smartass. I’m just helping you rule out age, as a determining factor for why you don’t like it. Also, Eugene played his usual character, and Catherine O’Hara did, too. So, it’s not them, either. Chris Elliot, maybe? ...
This is as great as I remember it when I used to watch SCTV on late Saturday nights. All that incredible assembled talent, topped off with John Candy as the beaver. I sure do miss you, Mr Johnny LaRue, even all these years after you left this world.
Catzilla, there were a lot of rumors about former child stars being killed in Vietnam. I remember a skit from “SNL” hosted by Ron Howard. In the skit, Opie comes home to Mayberry to find the town overrun with corruption and crime. Barney tells Opie that he thought Opie was killed in ‘Nam. “That was The Beaver.”!Opie replies.
You are absolutely right, this is my favorite and the more you watch the funnier it gets, I didn't notice the Beavers huge lunch his mom was packing until I watched it the 3rd time, gut splitting for sure, and the acting is extraordinary 😉
@Rick C. Thanks for that. All of those other cartoon voices she did during her career! Amazing! The original Cindy Lou Who, Betty Rubble in the Flintstone's pilot, many of the familiar Looney Toon witches, etc.
Lol,look at the Beav's GIANT lunchbox with a gallon of milk and enough food to feed a small army! This skit is one of the best ever,so damn funny I can hardly stand it!
Everyone in this skit is amazing, but Joe Flaherty really cracks me up flailing on the floor with his lanky long legs and arms. He is such a gem and underrated of the whole SCTV cast I think,
This is some of the earliest Canadian footage of the original show that made its way, 4, 5, 6, years later into the magnificent Friday night show on NBC, from 1980-83, or thereabouts. Given the careers that they all enjoyed later, this gathering of very young comedic geniuses is CELESTIAL.
You got to see a lot of stuff from earlier years as they realized how difficult it was to fill 90 minutes. And at the time it didn't matter as most of the US hadn't seen it before.
I got lucky that KHJ Channel 9 in LA (now known as KCAL) starting airing the syndicated Canadian shows in the late 70s, so I got exposed to these really early. It was great to see them re-aired during the NBC era, because we didn't even have a VCR, much less TH-cam to watch these over and over again.
Best show, while growing up. I miss John Candy, he was a great Canadian icon and so funny. Interesting how my grade 5 teacher was a close friend of his. When he heard the news, we had a month or more of watching SCTV honour him.
Love it, I remember this way back when.. Everyone in this is a star, each one of these actors is truly funny & had great career's because of their talents.
"seems so stiff and staged. And still does." No shit. If anything it would just be even more stiff and staged, and generally terrible, now. Best years for SNL: 76-79, 1982-83(almost completetly due to Eddie Murphy), 87-94, 96-2000. Everything else on Saturday Night Dead *sucked*.
This skit is so “inside” that you won’t get it unless you remember watching “Leave it to Beaver” in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The SCTV writers and cast were brilliant.
Eddie: "...so that's the story, Wally. I'm gay and I'm proud of it." (Creepily strokes Wally's hair) Wally: "Gee, Eddie. You better not come around here anymore!!!" LMAO
Wasn't there a joke on The Simpsons where Homer gets a call from a bill collector and he says that he's Tony Plow from Leave It to Beaver, then adds "Yeah, they were gay" and we never knew who "they" were because the Simpsons legal team said not to mention anyone specific who was in the cast of LITB?
In the late ‘70s our NBC affiliate used to show SNL at 10:30, then Monty Python reruns at midnight. That was perfect. Then one night instead of Monty Python, they showed SCTV in its place. I was not happy about it at first. But once I saw one or two SCTV shows, I became a huge fan. It’s amazing how the entire cast were eventually part of the best comedic films of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Maybe my favorite line is when Ward says to the Beaver, "I thought you had died in Vietnam," referring to the old rumor that Jerry Mathers had died in Vietnam without actually mentioning it straight out.
The talent of comedy and writing on this show was incredible. And if you missed it, it only got better after the SCTV players went their separate ways. Pure comedic genius!
I can't believe it took me until rewatching it this time to realize that what June is doing in the whole first scene is packing Beaver an ENORMOUS lunch...gallon of milk, tons of fruit, etc....why did it take me so long? Anyway, this is as hilarious today as it was when they first did it. Oh, and RIP, Lumpy, even if you didn't really jump in front of a train.
Thanks for sharing that....my God me too, it's because I was so focused on Beavers Dad who reall made me laugh, can't wait to watch it again and get another laugh and yes I've seem it many times.

Absolutely
You can say that again.

IDK... Maybe the 1st cast of Mad TV???.. just saying
