Just wanted to put this out there- if you have PERSISTENT anterior rib pain around the false ribs (8-10) and along the dermatomes (the sides of your ribcage, below the armpit) it could be slipping rib syndrome, and you do NOT need to be “hit by a truck” for it to happen. Hypermobility, bouts of coughing, direct or indirect trauma, and pregnancy are all causes. It is not as rare as it’s made out to be, and the first surgeon to discover it over a century ago even said that in his paper.
I suffered from this recently from heavy weight lifting and thought i was having a heart attack with chest pain and back pain and heart palipations and all test came back normal and still had chest pain in the middle and heart palipations on and off. And he is right didn't show up on x ray or ct but i was miserable. Thank you for your videos doctor.
Im still having these symptoms and i have had 2 trips to ER and had nuclear stress test with images and ct of chest with imaging and blood work and having the doctors tell me my heart is fine and that they see i have pvcs but my heart is fine and they just think its anxiety causing this. I have appointment with my GP today at 2:00pm and do you have any advice for me to tell him to get any answers because these on off palpitations and back and chest pain are real. And last thank you for replying.

Thank you. Very informative. Encouraged me to go to chiropractor. 2 weeks ago at work tightening a bolt. Felt a pop. Sharp pain, it subsided. Tender but it felt ok. Today woke up very sharp pain. Stretching and heat allowed me to take a breath. Still painful. But not scaring me. A lot of the videos are self help. But yours showed benefit of using a professional.
I think it is important to note here that the term slipped rib is not necessarily the same as slipping ribs syndrome. While SRS is fairly rare it does not necessarily need a Mack truck of force to happen.

So I have been going through this for about 9 months. I have had every test known to man ran to make sure I had no GI issue or heart issue all clean. I’m a RN as well. I have days of crippling pain along the sides of my chest plate that spreads down to my xiphoid process and radiates lateral to that. I have soreness in my back, but chest pain is much worse. This all started after losing 40lbs on a Bowflex Max trainer that is a Stair Climber/ Elliptical combo machine. I also drive all day every day for work. So I think the combo of the two may have caused this. The thing that scares me the most is the secondary symptoms. Intense anxiety at times, heart palpitations, dizziness, lightheadedness, poor appetite, elevated HR and BP. Only thing that makes it 100% relax is my recliner with a heating pad on my back. I read with Costo it messes with your Vagal nerves. I have been seeing a chiropractor, doing laser therapy, massage therapist, doing stretches, and have PSO Spine Massager and Back Pod. I’m still having a hard time getting over this. It’s improved, but I still have really bad days. Do you think I have the right diagnosis and how long does this last it’s miserable?
Im a truck driver and just had an episode from drinking with my buddies the next morning i woke up thought i was having a heart attack the er said i was normal and gave me Tylenol when watching your video and you said pain can happen from driving all day made me realize i might have this my back between my shoulder blades and my chest hurts aches like a stabbing pain finally feeling relief from doing your exercises
Slippingribsyndrome sometimes requires surgery. Reddit has slipping rib has list of chest wall surgeons. Also when the false ribs are detached there’s no way to reattach. Dr Hansen chest wall surgeon on you tube demonstrates how he performs manual test to identify detached ribs.
Went to the ER they thought I was having a MI, after all test done there and further testing days later they said it was "only inflammation of the cartilage between my bones." That was 8-9 years ago, It hasn't stopped yet.
I use to have chostocondritis in my sternum if i would sut up and push out it would pop. No i have 1 single rib toward middle back below shoulders with a hard sore knot. Whrn my back gets tight or feel winded i push that up and in and feel waaayyy better. Super satisfying.
Thank you doctor. I have the same clicking and slipping rib in my right chest. What is the best treatment for this for a permanent repair rather than pain management although mine is not painful now.
Can this be fully fixed?? I have this pain for about a year now, exactly as you discribed! Goes into my shoulder/armpit and seems like torn ligaments or some nerve pressure all the time. Mri showed nothing, xray nothing. But pain still there. Have to find good chiropractor!
Im looking for this type of work in Charlotte NC area. Been having for years due to car accidents, jiujitsu and bad sleeping habits. Also have seen so many different types of professionals and no one has been able to help so far.
so since I was a child I've always had the pain in the middle of my chest/ ribs at the front, I can feel and hear it cracking and crunching like cartilage cracking when I move my shoulders stretching them back and forwards, this is accompanied by the pain I have had for nearly 38 years. I also have chronic pain in my shoulder blade area meaning it comes and goes but when it comes I have no option but to be off work as it immobilizes me. when I was a kid I was taken to hospital and they said the middle of my rib cage (sternum?) could be infected and I would "grow out of it" well 30 years later and its still here. what can I do to get some help or relief.
Hi Doctor, thanks for sharing this video, I find it very helpful. I have had chest pain, shoulder left quadrant pain, shortness of breath arm and neck pain for the past 3 years. It started with chest and breathing problems. I have went to the doctors/ hospital and the ruled out heart, stroke problems. The said muscular . I was exercising and I felt I had pulled a muscle and over time the pain and symptoms become more and intense. No one has be able to help me thus far.

Hi Doc--- do you any have recommendation for any DCs in los angeles or OC area? maybe colleagues you went to school with or someone you might know from professional connections. There are so many "crack houses" around here and it is hard to know from websites which practitioners are legit and have an anatomical basis for the adjustments they do and have a real plan of care other than cracking everything indescriminately. I love your approach and your clear , eloquent explanation and patient cases. truly amazing channel I've learned a lot. Wish I lived in brooklyn. You know your anatomy and you know the actual root of the problem to tackle it. THANK YOU for the knowledge you spread
How do you feel about using the activator tool on front ribs that went out by sternum with Costochondritis. Could this cause inflammation and irritation?
I have a few autoimmune problems. I was diagnosed with MS approximately 25 years ago, rhumetory arthritis hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia and acute costochronditis. When first diagnosed with costochronditis I firstly when to emergency twice, thinking (as most do) it was heart attack. My naturalpathic doctor told me what it was, after a battery of tests. I was relieved to hear my heart tests came back normal. He also said it was related to the arthritis. It has been bad lately, moving into both shoulders and jaw…deep breathing worsens symptoms. I’m 61, will this last forever? I’ve tried different exercises, but will pop up for no apparent reason. Seems worse when wet.
I had a massive panic attack and/or seizure over a month ago and now have left chest pain, later some lower rib pain that slowly spread to middle and right chest. Cardiologist visit did not indicate any heart issues. Clean bill of health. Pain intensifies when sleeping. Does this sound like costo? Does acupuncture help, too?
I haven't made it past "you're an old woman" or "probably irritation caused by coughing" (this after telling doctor it has been sore for years now and i haven't been coughing) 😪
2 years ago I slid down a flight of wooden stairs while holding a toilet. 15 stairs. Now for a year I have had pains so bad it feels like someone grabs two ribs and squeezes them. I drop to my knees, it takes my breath away and hurts for days. It's been happening. More n more. Ct didn't show anything, nor did x-rays. It's getting scary. Hurts my spine in back nothing in front or chest
Just recently, I had covid coughing, which seems to have caused intercostal muscle strain. I was well into a full recovery. The pain was easing daily, and then I coughed the right-side ribs seemed to pop, and the pain was excruciating how long until I make, a full recovery from this
Hi Doc, first of all thank you so much for putting such a great content. I have left lower chest pain (dull) near sternum. but mostly felt when i stretch or squeeze my chest. but don’t feel any pain while breathing. when i wake up in the morning and try to bend or stretch , felt the pain. After the 2nd day of discovering this pain, I started having palpitation and occasionally high bp issues, but i don’t feel any pain during palpitations episode. done all the heart related tests, chest X-ray and all came fine. It has been almost 2 months. Do you think I have Costochondritis?
Your symptoms sound like mine. No pain when I breathe. He has been going on for a little over 2 months; on the ride side of my chest. Haven't ran any tests yet, but every else sounds the same. What are you doing to help your condition now?
I noticed an extremely mild pain in what I would call my left pectoral area when I was pumping shampoo. That was two months ago. I constantly check for breast lumps because I am scared to death. It recently got a bit worse after aerobic workouts, where I would bend to stretch and gravity would cause pain. Also rolling my shoulders for stretching hurts that area. Now my shoulder blades also feel tight. As far as chest goes its still the far left side. I think me feeling around for lumps actually aggravated it, and possibly made it worse. I have a doctors appointment this week.
I’m 40 years old. My family and I went to my father in law’s company picnic that was held at a theme park. My wife and I rode a wooden roller coaster and I was sitting on the right seat. During the ride the roller coaster bank right and my whole body went to the left hitting my wifes shoulder buckle. I heard a pop. And after the ride was over I left rib was really hurting. When I took a deep breath I hurts. After 2 days I felt fine, but still a little sore. After that though when I was back at work I moved a certain way and heard the pop again and I’m now having a lot of pain. Just clearing my throat it hurts and taking a deep breath hurts my chest. I may need to go to the ER. I’m holding off on going since my co pay is $500. I know I don’t have to pay it right away, but I would still need to pay it either way.
What can I do to help speed the healing process? My separation occurred when I was trying to fix a large industrial paper towel roll (the paper tube was bent in the middle) and I was pulling it against my chest like I’d done a million times before with zero issue and then I felt and heard a very faint yet distinct *pop* followed by instant sharp pain, I honestly thought I broke a rib until I started doing some research and learned about the costochondrial separation. I meet every single symptom and the one that messes me up the most, maybe because mine is pressed in and not out? But when I take a deep of breath as the pain allows I can hear a faint crunching and popping sound? Not sure if I should be worried about that part, I think it’s awesome 😂 but seriously…. This thing HURTS and I’m sleeping like 2 hours a night.
Hii doctor m from India and m suffering this symptoms last one year plz suggest how to recover the pain extually pain is to high some time in all of uper and back body part including hands also plz and m complete 40 years
Hi Doctor. I'm 60 and have sporadic bouts of pain on my left side in rib cage. At least 10 years ago I was leaning over a chain link fence to pick up something on the other side and I slipped down on to the top of the fencing. I felt a weird sensation on my left side between my ribs. I got off the fence and just rested until I felt ok. About 5 minutes later I mowed the lawn. The next day it really hurt, but it eventually felt less painful after a few days. Every so often I get pain in that area, but it eventually recedes. I've learned to live with it because I'm uninsured and I have thousands in medical bills already that is stressing me out. How can I tell if this is Costochondritis or a slipping rib? Thank you
Something similar happened to me bending into a box to get a squishmallow at Walmart & slipped & kinda tipped into the box, edge of it dug right up under my rib on the left bottom side 2 years ago & it’s still messed up it seems to be getting worse over time, my back hurts now too & if I roll over & sleep on my left side in the night, when I wake up & sit up it feels like a boulder has been sitting on the inside of my left bottom ribcage while I was asleep, & feels like my rib literally has a crack in it or something, I hate this it’s so sh!tty I just want it fixed so badly
I have same symptoms as you described.. I went to hospital and my primary care no one able to understand or describe main reason of having chest and back rib pain. Everyone saying your heart is good lung is good no issue 😒 I don't know what to do or where to go who can help me out.
Same pain on side rib after loading a riding lawn mower up some ramps to a truck bed. Has gotten better but still there from time to time. Very very very annoying!!!!! On my 5th month 😢
so given that i have fibromyalgia..had a heart attack 2months ago..had a stent put in..had a reaction to the contrast dye mri...had flu....im guessing my rib discomfort is costochondritis. lol
i had slipped rib and the chest "pain" felt like withdrawals from pain killers. it was a horizontal contraction of the chest muscles with a dull pain. but that was only after i was treated for contusions
Hello Dr David Kulla, I believe I have some issues with my ribs, but my doctors say that it's costochrondritis. I had a bad fall on the left side of my rib cage and was very winded after I made contact. I've been dealing with this for 2 years. If I stand in a somewhat slouched position and try to touch my chest with my chin, I experience a sharp pain in the centre of my chest. Also, if turn/twist to the left side (where I fell) it feels significantly tight, and in normal life if I sit up after sleeping, I feel a tear like pain where my sternum is, I also click it every morning. Asides from the information above, I feel very sore and tender under my arm pit if I was to touch it / or put force, the same goes for the centre of my chest. Every now and then I feel a sharp pain from the left and right pectorals and sometimes some pain and aching in my back in-between the shoulder blades. I have tried the back pod and other things like tennis balls, but still no improvement. What do you say as an expert in this field? Thanks a lot, Tommy
Try Therapeutica Pillow + pillow under your legs. This will make you spend more time sleeping on your back. Sleeping on your back is a must and has helped me incredibly for my ribs problems.
bro you have described exactly my symptoms ) exactly the same, only I started it after improper training on the bars. I tried to take a break, the pain became less, but as soon as I resumed training the pain appears again. What to do ?)
I’ve had the pain in the same place. Had an adjustment and it felt so much better but I think it slipped again. This all started while I was pregnant and postpartum (11lb baby and I’m 5’3 so not much room for her 😂) Should I try to strengthen my back or core? Both? To keep it from slipping also while getting regular adjustments?
These conditions are mostly caused by UCTD, especially when there was no blunt force trauma involved. Repeated adjustments are highly likely to make the mobility worse. I’d like to see this doctor become knowledgeable in immobilization following adjustment but that means no more return visits. No Mack truck required, aggressive chiropractics can easily cause it.
Hi man you seem knowledgeable about this , would you care to elaborate on how you would approach this? I’ve had this for 11 years now, always feels better for a couple of days but it always comes back … I feel like strengthening my lats in a stretched position ( kind of like when using an ab wheel) works but only after really digging a lacrosse ball into my rib joint at the back ( where I feel pain) . At some point I test rotating my torso on the painful side and if the pain is 80% gone , I start working my lat in a stretched position , and try strengthening it isometrically. This has seemed to work best for me, O’ve been doing this for the past week now .
I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome and suffered with this for over 3 years…. Have you ever treated anyone with EDS … as someone can break my ribs with just a hug . Not a Mack truck 😂!! Any treatment for those that can’t even drive or stand due to the pain ?
Respected Sir, I am also suffering from costocondritis, after my father expired on 13th September 2020 in corona, Sir but I am having a pain in left side as well as on right side & backside also I had done the HR.CT. & x-ray & even 2D echo they are absolutely clear but sir than also why pain arise after doing a lot of work, my husband is a homeopathic dr. he had given me the medicine and by that medicine i am fine but all of sudden the pain arise my husband & my son is telling me not to be over exhausted don't do lot of work but sir being and middle class person we have to do each & every work Sir my question is that what precautions should I take when all of sudden it start paining in both the side of chest & even in the backside. I had started doing your exercise since from 2 days. Sir you are the best. Thank you & plz suggest me what precautions should I take after the pain arise.
Hi I need serious help my sternum is making a popping sound and I get a serious tension/pain don't know what it is gone to my local doctor and he doesn't know either considering going for an x ray
If it feels like constant pressure mainly when you sit or sit in a car and you have upper back pain, go to the ER, rule it out. Rule out heart, rule out GERD. Then follow up with your pcp. The only thing with costochondritis is they can’t test for it. Even a chest X-ray won’t. But get a chest X ray to rule anything out. Then, do costo yoga/stretches. If you can, take turmeric, it helps fight the inflammation.
I've been Poppin ribs out of place or slipping ribs I guess since my twenties I am now my 40s I was never told anything about either one of these conditions I always wondered what was wrong if I overextend my arm reaching for something I'll pop it out and I'm down for 2 weeks if I twist the wrong way I'm laying on my chest and trying to pull something up from the ground like off the bed or something if it's got a little bit of weight to it a rib will pop and then I'm down for 2 weeks with pain. I think this might be something that I have but the pain is so severe I'm afraid to get the test done and it happened to me
How do I convince my Dr to test for SRS? I was first diagnosed with costochondritis, but my ribs have been horrible for over a year...I have to get adjusted twice a week...it started with my left rib under my shoulder blade going out, now my lower left ribs feel like I just went through a boxing match. I also developed AFib after my rib went out....no Dr believes that my ribs are connected to all the issues I've been having but nothing else makes sense...I'm literally going insane from the constant pain
man im dying, almost 4 weeks in. i went to a chiro who told me my ribs seem out of whack so he cracked me and gave me some front rib relief. since then ive been using any home exercise techniques i can, whats happening is a nasty tension tight feeling that runs up between my shoulder blade and spine. i can feel a slight discomforting ache stemming from where my ribs meet my spine. i was assuming i may have displaced ribs according to what the chiro said the first time, but now im wondering if its this. i have no insurance and a very limited funds to get this taken care of but i dont even know where to start.

I believe I have it also. None of my docs know anything about it. I went to ER twice thinking I was suffocating or having heart attack, I have AFIB. I had the back pain and pain right under my breast on left side. Felt like an iron band all along my diaphram. I kept saying this but they never picked up on it. Heard about CostoChondritis quite by accident. I think it started with an upper respiratory virus which caused horrendous coughing. Then after that the pain and unable to take a deep breath on lying down at night, so off to the ER at night! Heart rate was too high as a result of all this so they focused on that, never had any diagnosis or treatment for the cartledge. Doing your exercises and bought the cold laser. On anti inflammatory. Thx
I am having a chest pain on lift side when I speak or sleep on lift side and all heart test are normal do have some bronchitis but is it costochondritis too do anyone know something about it
I have no idea what is up with me but when I move in certain positions usually twisting motions or stretching motions, I can feel a certain point of my lower ribcage almost pop or click. If I lay on my back and press said spot with my hand if I get it in the right way it feels like I am pushing something in and it’s popping back out. I can’t see or feel any lumps it’s more like something is catching. But it’s right on the edge of my rib so I’m not actually pressing the rib but the skin underneath, it feels like it catches on my rib. I weight lift but I’m not sure if that’s what’s caused it, it’s not painful as such but it’s really uncomfortable. I also did suffer a quite heavy and fast moving blow to the ribs about a week or so ago whilst playfighting with my partner I was laying on the floor and I tripped him and he fell knee first onto my abdomen and I do remember saying that my ribs hurt, so it could be that. I’m scared as to what it is as the feeling is really strange and it is starting to get worse also. I’m booked to see a physio therapist this week but I’m just looking for advice from anyone. I’m usually healthy and my bmi is all good, I’m an 18 year old female also.
@@rosie.132 This sounds like what I have going on too! Were you able to get any hints from the PT as to what it could be? I think I might need to find a PT also..
I suffered costocondritis severely in december of 2022 after a bad bout of coughing. The whole rid cage went into a spasm. Five months on l am still getting some tightness on the lower rib cage of the sternum. Did have a sports massage a week and a half ago which seemed to free up some of the i tercostal tightness. I saw a physiotherapist on tuesday and he gave me some stertching exercise to do. Day three and it seems to make the rib cage feel tighter rather than looser is that normal as if the rib is pulling on the lower sternum. Is it time to get adjusted by a chiroprationer as chiropractioners are not used by the nhs in the uk and most physical therapists are pretty useless in my experience.
I wish 🥺 we where here in Greece..i suffer nearly two years from Costo and nothing helped...no one understands that..i wish you could do something from me
I went to the hospital for it and this is what they called it they said I injured multiple ribs on the right side wall but none of the medicine has helped any and my breathing has gotten a little bit worse
I’ve had costo and fibro for years. They wax and wane. I’m 73. Lately my costo is so bad. It’s like a cascade of symptoms..Fibro causes costo..hand in hand. When the costo is bad,,of course my upper breastbone is sore, painful, and if I press it, it still hurts when I stop pressing. I’ve been to a rheumatologist, chiropractor, cardiologist, had my heart totally checked… all negative. When the costo gets bad I feel breathless and it really scares me. This has always happened to me. When it subsides, the breathlessness subsides. I can feel the inflammation in my upper breastbone at the top. This is really affecting my quality of,life. Do any of your costo patients mention that breathless feeling when it’s really bad.? Can you please explain to me why it does that. I thank you in advance….I wish I lived near you, but I’m in Georgia…thanks bon
Very true and it could also be a pinched nerve in thoracic region mimicking a rib injury
I got it after my pregnancy

Slippingribsyndrome sometimes requires surgery. Reddit has slipping rib has list of chest wall surgeons. Also when the false ribs are detached there’s no way to reattach. Dr Hansen chest wall surgeon on you tube demonstrates how he performs manual test to identify detached ribs.
So what’s the solution for false ribs?
Leave them!! Don't do surgery!!!

Aloha & Thanks for the Rad video and info ! My Bud Surfs and might have this same injury & I will pass it on .

Fibromyalgia?
I'm in the exact same boat - 3 + years dealing with chest and back pain - every day.

After seeing this video, I understand my issue, so what is the best way I can read with this pain do I visit any chiropractor right away, please suggest
Did your pain go away
Activator is great !
I have the same pain he has went to heart doctor it’s clear could these symptoms be associated with lung issues too?
I had a massive panic attack and/or seizure over a month ago and now have left chest pain, later some lower rib pain that slowly spread to middle and right chest. Cardiologist visit did not indicate any heart issues. Clean bill of health. Pain intensifies when sleeping. Does this sound like costo? Does acupuncture help, too?
Cryotherapy helpful too?
Can you have pain in multiple areas at the same time? And can you get breathless from costochondritis?

I think you very well
May have it

Can this element create high blood pressure? I usually have good pressure but sometimes my blood pressure spikes to very very high.
Hi doc.rib cartilage harvesting for rhinoplasty.any slow damage.pain seen when I get older.sir my age is 36 😢 now 🙏please reply sir.

Hello Dr David Kulla,
I believe I have some issues with my ribs, but my doctors say that it's costochrondritis.
Thanks a lot,
Tommy
Try Therapeutica Pillow + pillow under your legs. This will make you spend more time sleeping on your back. Sleeping on your back is a must and has helped me incredibly for my ribs problems.
bro you have described exactly my symptoms ) exactly the same, only I started it after improper training on the bars. I tried to take a break, the pain became less, but as soon as I resumed training the pain appears again. What to do ?)
I suggest you see a professional, chiropractor would be best fit especially a ccep chiropractor
I cannot find. A doctor in Pensacola Florida or surrounding areas
That will do the surgery for slipping rib syndrome. Do you have any suggestions?
Please update when you do
I’ve had the pain in the same place. Had an adjustment and it felt so much better but I think it slipped again. This all started while I was pregnant and postpartum (11lb baby and I’m 5’3 so not much room for her 😂)
Should I try to strengthen my back or core? Both? To keep it from slipping also while getting regular adjustments?
Strengthen all the above back, shoulder blades and core
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME 😢 going to theER
I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome and suffered with this for over 3 years…. Have you ever treated anyone with EDS … as someone can break my ribs with just a hug . Not a Mack truck 😂!! Any treatment for those that can’t even drive or stand due to the pain ?
What the hell did you have plugged into that power socket?
That is my symptoms 100, it is feel like heart attack. Did stress test, cardio gram etc nobody can figure out what is up.
Mine reduced by correcting posture , massage gun , tennis ball , and sowmetimes physiotherapy after 4months or so
Respected Sir,

Doc. Do you know why it happens once a year of pain. Then it disappears. I feel like mine come back after a bout of stress.
man im dying, almost 4 weeks in. i went to a chiro who told me my ribs seem out of whack so he cracked me and gave me some front rib relief. since then ive been using any home exercise techniques i can, whats happening is a nasty tension tight feeling that runs up between my shoulder blade and spine. i can feel a slight discomforting ache stemming from where my ribs meet my spine. i was assuming i may have displaced ribs according to what the chiro said the first time, but now im wondering if its this. i have no insurance and a very limited funds to get this taken care of but i dont even know where to start.
Anyone got it after pregnancy??????
I was sleep on my right side and never turn back and in the morning my cest are hurt is already 3 weeks. The pain are in the infront on my cest in the between on my breast...is there anything I can do
How does it matter if it's costocrontis versus slippery ribs syndrome?

I have both sadly
