The more I watched this video the more it made sense to me. He is simply walking down the sidewalk trying to keep his stride. Not threatening, not doing a thing to anyone. As he tries to get to his destination, everyone and everything gets in HIS way without any regard for him. Some are angry, some are forceful, some aren’t even paying attention. It’s brilliant. We are born with a purpose and a focus. The “longer we walk” the disruptions and distractions are many and varied. We tend to lose our focus trying to adjust for others. It’s really very deep and I love this video as well as this song.

Wow, Amber! After over 20 years of seeing this video I finally understand why he's bumping into everything, eyes lifeless. Thanks to you talking about not enjoying the little things in life and only living to work, he goes through life like a zombie. Your fresh insight is really amazing quite often! I always have conveyed to coworkers that family and friends are most important, not the job.I retired early last year, and my final email was "Work so that you may live, but don't live to work."

They are bumping into him. "Obstacles". He is just walking on his path, straight ahead. Getting through the obstacles of life. Sometimes, he was able to avoid them.

I love this song and it's very deep. Even the video has meaning. His walk is a representation of the path of life, the people he encounters are the people and events that we encounter through our lives. The guy with the fridge on a dolly is like a big life altering event that was narrowly avoided. The people he bumped into are the little speed bumps that help shape our lives. The girl in the car is a bad relationship, the car is the large event that he was able to cross and move on from but she didn't move on as easily and followed representing how a love can effect your life long term even after it's ended. The lady he knocked down was like an encounter where he hurt someone else's life in some way and he was recognizing that but still life continues without looking back. The girl that checked him out was like a perfect fling that came and went and left only a fond memory. The car that actually made him pause was a major life event that held him in place for a while, maybe good maybe bad but significant enough to make his life take pause but in the end it too did pass and life continued as always. And the end when the other four followed with him is like the people in your life who are there for the long haul whoever they may be they stick with you till the end while still living their lives respectively.

The music video is an homage to a video of the English group Massive Attack's "Unfinished Symphony" from 1991. In that video, the singer walks down a street in a single shot confidently and not caring mostly with her eyes closed and never bumps into anyone or anything. Here, the singer walks down the street in a single shot with his eyes open, confidently and not caring, and bumps into lots of people and things. To me, the song is basically saying you're born, you're alone, you try to find someone, scratch for money, and you go down the only road you know, and then you die and you can't change that path. So, he's going down that road and he doesn't care about anything.
First, the orchestral riff is sampled from the Andrew Loog Oldham orchestral arrangement of the Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time" which resulted in the Stones suing the Verve, and originally getting 100% writing credit for the song and all royalties from the song going to the Stones until 2019, when the Glitter Twins ceded the credit to Richard Ashcroft, the song's actual writer.
Also, the director of the video told everyone walking towards Richard Ashcroft to purposefully walk into him.

It's a metaphor for life. All the bumps and missteps along the way...
The history of this how this song and how it came to be is interesting. The Staple Singers recorded" This May be the last time" in 1951, The Rolling Stones liked the song and added their interpretation to it via their style and lyrics because no one owned the rights to the song at the time. The Andrew Oldman Orchestra took the Stones interpretation and made it orchestral obviously, the Verve took the orchestral element from Andrew Oldham and made their interpretation, which was tied up in a legal battle for around 20 years give or take, in which the Verve couldn't use or profit from the song until very recently. Interesting journey for that one song and it's many styles.

One more piece of information. Before recording the song, the Verve obtained permission from Andrew Oldman to use the sample. They did not, however, obtain permission from Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, a/k/a The Glimmer Twins. Jagger and Richards sued the Verve and confiscated nearly all the profits from this song.

The lawsuit was brought by the Stones' former manager Allen Klein, who owned the copyright, but the settlement did give the song to Richards and Jagger. The upshot is that in 2019 Jagger and Richards gave their part of the publishing rights back to Richard Ashcroft of the Verve.

I identify so much with that - feeling the power that music has to take me on a journey and change me, but knowing that the realities of life will still be there when the musical escape is over.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. It’s actually my ringtone for my text. I love this song Lyrics are powerful.

"sonnet" or "lucky man" are great songs by the Verve. lead singer richard ashcroft has such a great voice, influenced many 90s bands in the UK. also for your female friday, try massive attack, "unfinished sympathy" very similar video, but not song, u would both love it i think.

One of my best memories was being right up near the stage and singing along to "Lucky Man", my voice was wrecked for days afterwards...
I've always taken it that the people on the street are like the obstacles you face in life. He's just focussed on the end goal and not on the obstacles.
And I disagree that he's bumping into them; most of these people bump into him. He's just walking a straight line and they veer into his line.
The way I looked at the music video + lyrics is this:
he’s walking by people, not moving out of the way for them, and bumping right into them. But what else is happening? They’re doing the same exact thing back to him. It’s to show that none of us are special, we are all the same. We are all in the bittersweet symphony, we are all trying to make ends meet, we’re all a slave to the money then we die. And we’re a million different people from one day to the next but we can’t change our mould.
If you look up the history of this song, the lyrics come to life. This man was sued so bad that he didn’t make anything off this song, and this song was POPULARRRRRR in the late 90’s and early 2000’s (thanks cruel intentions movie)!
The fact that he kept playing this song this song for pretty much free, says A LOT. I’m glad Richard Ashcroft FINALLY got his song back in 2019! Too bad it was 20+ years later and the song has been milked dry! They need to put this song in a new movie or have the tik tok comminity (can’t believe I’m saying this) get ahold of this masterpiece and get everyone listening to this again so Richard and the rest of the verve get their fair share of royalties.

Classic mid 90s tune. Just great. These guys came out the same time as Oasis and Blur during the BritPop era, but never made it as big. This tune is perfect though.
It's funny, The Verve and The Charlatans UK are two of my favorite bands to come out of BritPop, and both are obscure and underappreciated, in the U.S. at least.

I have loved this song since I heard it on the movie Cruel Intentions; this song was one of the main reasons I bought the soundtrack for the film. I had never actually seen this video before, just the one associated with the film.
My recommendation this time is more Christmas music. I know you guys love Dolly Parton, so I'm going to recommend her song "Hard Candy Christmas." Such a beautiful song, I have no doubt you'll both love it.
Around the same time this song was big, a similarly named band called The Verve Pipe released a song called “The Freshmen”. That one is definitely worth checking out.

The vid represents to me, all the people he has "bumped into" during his life, ie. not all people who cross your path are on the same plain as you or are friendly or even loving, you just have to pick yourself up and keep walking and find solace wherever you do or can

One of my favourite songs from the 90's. Very deep when you listen to the lyrics.
I think the continuous symphonic element of the song, besides being beautiful, suggests the continuous journey of life he's talking about. Kind of like his stride...how it doesn't change in the video no matter what is going on around him (even when he's kind of rude). The sound always seems to be climbing but without resolution, while having a hint of melancholy and resolve.
This is one the better productions from this band. The video in itself speaks volumes. Thank you for listening.

The album that this song came from is one of the greatest albums of all time and features so many brilliant songs including "Sonnet" "The Drugs Don't Work" and my favourite "Lucky Man" A highlight of 90's music and Britpop. Great band and Richard Ashcroft is an amazing singer, songwriter and showman
I love The Verve. Such wonderful memories. Sonnet was the first dance at my wedding. My husband used to play Lucky Man on the jukebox whenever we went to the pub. Unfortunately he is no longer with us, but the memories remain, partly thanks to this wonderful band.

Around the same time in the 90s, Massive Attack released a video of the lead singer walking down the street and I always saw this as a kind of cheeky response to that one. It's called Unfinished Sympathy, it's well worth checking out - Massive Attack are amazing! You might also want to check out Portishead, their most famous song is called Glory Box, it's from about the same era as this

Hi guys - love your reactions. This was filmed in London and if you live there, people aimlessly walk into you all the time, focussed on their own world and often not caring about what is around them...it can be exhausting walking down the street avoiding all these people who expect you to move for them...so you did a good job catching that message. One day my husband walked like that because he was tired of getting out of the way and he got absolutely pummeled...it really felt like a metaphor for life. Richard Ashcroft and the Verve are way too under rated. Some great Verve songs are "The drugs don't work" and "Lucky Man" and if you want to check out Richard Ashcroft on his own "Break the Night with Color" is an amazing song. Fun Fact: the woman who shouts for a while at him for walking over her car in the video is his wife.
I was going to say the exact same thing. I am from the North, but I notice when I go down to London that a lot of people are like this. It can be strange at first as where I am from and most places io here, people usually say hello to each other 😊

This always reminds me of Cruel Intentions which is basically a modern version of Dangerous Liaisons. Both movies are a great watch. But the verve is a group worth exploring more of.
He's walking against the grain of the so-called normal life. Taking the road less traveled. The woman whose car he walked on shows our love of material things and he doesn't care about material stuff. He doesn't subscribe to the slavery of life. He's going down the only road he's been down

One cannot listen to "Bitter Sweet Symphony" without thinking of the movie "Cruel Intentions"! Even though the song was first released in 1997, its legacy lies largely in the 1999 teen film, in which it soundtracks the final scene. I've always loved this song, and the movie was great too; although, it has a tragic ending. Thank you for this reaction!

An excellent song this was in a movie back in the '90s called Cruel Intentions Ryan Phillipe, Sara Michelle Geller it's a coming-of-age movie it's probably one of the best movies of the '90s, you really should watch it.
Cruel Intentions was a modern version of an older film called Dangerous Liaisons (of which there's been several versions, but possibly the most famous was the 1988 film starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Uma Thurman, and Keanu Reeves). Those films were based on a French novel from 1782 (yep, you read that date correctly) which is called Les Liaisons Dangereuses in the original French.

As others have said "The Drugs Don't Work", "Sonnet" and "Lucky Man" are all amazing songs. I'd recommend "Lucky Man" next as it's really positive vibe is a nice counterpoint to "Bitter Sweet Symphony".
