  • In this video we're listening to The Proclaimers. This band had a huge hit in the 90's when we were young adults with 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)'. That is the only song that we know very well by them, so we are definitely curious about their music. Let's hear what more they have to offer. Enjoy!

This is a great album and song . When the album came out in 1988 I’m Gonna be was a moderate hit on modern / alternative rock stations . It wasn’t til 1993 when it was on the Benny and Joon movie soundtrack that it really took off and became a huge hit. At least here in the U.S.

Beautiful reaction. Leith is an area around the docks and the district is fiercely proud of it's identity as being a separate district from Edinburgh. The brothers are Hibs supporters and Leith is where Hibernian Football Club play at their stadium called Easter Road. It's a famous anthem of the Hibs supporters and Leithers (Residents of the area). I was a little surprised you did not comment on the lyrics? Take care Haniers and vibes from Bonny Scotland.

🤯… This song makes me cry EVERY time ! So soulful , so heartfelt and SO homesick-making for us ex-pats ! Totally unlikely pop stars but that they are ! Leith is a separate but very close neighbour of Edinburgh , they’re fiercely independent , the footy tournament you seen Chris was the Scottish cup win by Hibernian one of the 2 Edinburgh football teams , they adopted this song and they belt it out every time Hibs play . It was such a departure from their earlier hits like Letter from America and Throw the ‘R’ Away and indeed the well known I’m gonna be .. it’s got Irish and even Cajun echoes to my ears and unbelievably uplifting … sigh … just perfect 👌

Because of their popularity in Canada (and probably Scotland), this band got a second chance, and they ran with it!!!
    I love this album!!!
Another band we (Canadians) afforded a second chance to was Katrina and the Waves, their re-release was waaay different, and better, but we kept them afloat just long enough. Before you go on about how crappy they were, you're probably thinking only of "Walking on Sunshine", and you shouldn't do that, it's like the worst song on the album (and you still know all the lyrics, and really like the song), but the whole album if pretty fucking awesome.

"The Game of Love" ( th-cam.com/video/Ii_qEb1YRg8/w-d-xo.html ) is a great, straight up rock and roll tune, plus no-one else has ever reacted to it, like ever.

Thanx for doing this one. Forgot that I requested it, but it figures seeing as i like the song. The Proclaimers were two hit wondres in Australia. The other hit was ''I'm On My Way''. Chris and Cynthia, please look up ''1983 commercial - Brut 33 - Where Would You Be?'' and tell me if this ad rings a bell. The ad was made in Melbourne during the winter of 1982, and in spite of the cold, all cast and crew had a jolly good time. I worked as a crew member, and I was also part of ''where, where'' chorus.
I heard it got exposure in Canada, and I've always been curious to know if that is true.

The first time that I heard this, or one of the first times, was in the late 80s on a BBC Radio 1 show hosted by a DJ called Simon Bates. He had a feature called 'Our Tune', in which listeners wrote in to tell him about a song that had a special meaning to them. Most of the stories were fairly heart-rending.
I'm pretty sure that it was late autumn 1988 when someone suggested this song, saying that it reminded them of their daughter who had recently been killed. After reading the letter and just before playing the song, Bates revealed the identity of the contributor and his daughter.
I believe that his name was Gordon Wilson, a man who had come to prominence in the previous 12 months as he had spoken out in the media about the death of his daughter, a nurse who had been killed the previous year by an IRA bomb planted at a Remembrance Sunday event in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland.
This song always reminds me now of that story.
