  • The FUJIFILM X-T1 is a camera that I've owned 3 times, and it's been the best value for money camera I've owned. In this short video I explain why I love this camera and I consider the reasons for it's being such value for money.

    Your opinion and experience of the X-T1 has been of great value for making up my mind. I have just purchased a X-T1. I use the X-T5 for most things. I've owned digital's Hasselblad, GFX, Leica, Sony, Olympus, & Canon in the past. I think it's for time for me to go, Vintage lens & Camera kit for well under £400, inc Bag. Thanks and good luck.

    Good video mate, with some lovely and quite stunning images. It amazes me so to see all the interest and obit I’ve comments regarding the XT-1! Quite a few people put the camera down when it was first released. Sure, at first it had a few issues, that FUJI was quick to fix via firmware. I have had my Fuji XT-1 since around 2015, purchased new. It’s a fine little camera. Cheers 🍻

    Hi Chris. Agree totally. A couple of years ago, the X-T1 was a bargain, often sub £200. Nowadays, it seems every Fujifilm camera has gone up in price on the used market. As a Canon shooter now, I can still see the appeal of such a great quality photography camera. Weirdly, the X-T2,3 and 4 seem to be slightly more realistically priced but still more than 2 years ago.

    How do you feel about the XTrans 2 sensor vs the XTrans 1 sensor? I purchased my silver XT1 late 2017 for $650 new. Loved it except for the difficult ISO dial and I preferred the shutter release on the XT2. So eventually I bought the XT2 when it went on sale 2019. But I've always been curious about the XPRO1 and it's 1st gen sensor considering how much acclaim it gets. But I definitely agree that there is something very special about the XT1: the sensor, size, weight, ergonomics And, btw that silver graphite finish on the T1 and T2 is luxurious!!😅 It's too bad that media hype is making the prices inflate. Thanks so much for your creative content that you share. 📸📸📸

      Hi there, personally I think the X-Trans 1 sensor is even more filmic than the X-Trans 2 and it reminds me of some of my old film cameras. Shame they didn't release the X-T1 with that sensor, but the X-Trans 2 isn't that much different.

    Both the X-T1 and X-10* represent excellent value. I see they can still be both had for under £300 (I paid £200 for my first X-T1 in 2020, and £250 a year later, but that included the battery grip!). The ergonomisc are also amost perfect. It's not just older Fujifilm cameras that produce nicer looking images than their more modern upgrades. I bought an almost unused Pentax K5 with battery grip for under £200 last autumn, and the images look quite a bit nicer to me than those from my 24MP K3 and KP cameras. I suspect many of the older cameras from the other manufacturers will be the same when compared to their modern equivalents. If I did not have too many cameras and systems already, I would be looking at getting a Nikon D7000 or Olympus EM1 mk I, just out of curiosity. As you say the higher MP count sensors produce too clinical an image for my tastes, which I don't mind so much when shooting B&W as it can easily be overcome by shooting at a much higher ISO but that does not work so well with colour. In the case of Fujifilm the colours are not the same as the older cameras and it is very hard to replicate the "look".
    * I tend to use the X-T10 for an EDC camera, and the X-T1's when I want to do something more planned

    • @ChrisOrange
      @ChrisOrange  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      nice, I guess 10 years ago (which is when some of these cameras were made) is like a hundred years in camera manufacturing. It's moved on so quickly, and with the focus so much more on megapixels and AF, they forgot to think about the colours and texture of an image. Maybe it will come back round again in the future - would be great if they offered an old sensor n a new camera...

    I don’t see a big difference between the generations of sensors with the exception of blues on the first sensor leaning cyan. Additionally as a jpeg/custom recipe shooter, any differences are further diminished and it is painlessly easy to nudge an image with a few tweaks to a given recipe. Where I do see a difference is in the lenses. The original trio of primes are where my heart lies - and they benefit from a newer body in terms of AF performance. Nice video Chris!

I actually added the battery grip which does not add too much bulk to it. And I have a fuji x-e2 with the same sensor. Paired with the 23mm, 2.0 there is no need for a x100 camera for me...

    I recently sold my last X-Trans 2 camera, some of my favourite photos were taking with that sensor and the XF 35 F/1.4 However, as much as I love the way that sensor renders the image, it was just to slow operationally (time to focus, and for it to write to SD -Card etc) you can feel how much faster the X-T3/4 and newer X-T5 etc are to use.
    However, if you have loads of time for each shot, and are doing things it is not mission critical that the camera is ready to go then the image quality is unique.
    If the X-T1 is too expensive, the X-T10, X-E2, and X-E2s all shared the same sensor

    • @ChrisOrange
      @ChrisOrange  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      for me, those cameras are used more for travel and landscapes, so the operation speed isn't an issue. I wish they would release a new camera with an old sensor...

    • @9Mtikcus
      @9Mtikcus 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ChrisOrange me too, but not xtrans 2 old :) the X-S20 is a good idea, 4th gen sensor, 5th gen processor as 26 MP is more than enough for my work and I really like that sensor. But give me it in an X-T body. An X-T3 MK2, I like WR and Dual card slots for fault tolerance (not that an SD card has ever failed on me)
      Cut costs by removing ibis, a resolution bump on rear screen would be nice, then release it at £1000... But that's wishful thinking, I wouldn't be surprised if the X-T40 is that camera, just no WR and no dual SD cards and no iso dial.

    Hi Chris, I thought you’d stopped posting vlogs a while back, I’ve noticed I’m unsubscribed so have missed your recent posts………………..? Anyhow, as an X-T1/X-Pro1 user I have to agree with your opinion on the X-T1. I’ve had my chrome version for years, it’s a beautiful piece of kit. I watched a piece you vlogged a while back advising settings, from memory it was a B&W setting with ISO 4000, yes four thousand. I copied it, turned and took a pic of my 5 year old son and was blown away with the picture, it was stunning.
    As a wildlife shooter I bought the R6 to use with my 500/4. The AF for wildlife is amazing, it’s a great set up. I have the 70-200/2.8 and the 16-35/4 which I use for family stuff, but the IQ of the X-T1 easily holds its own against the Canon.
    I have the original lens line up of the 18/2, 35/1.4 and the 56/.2. I was planning on the 14/2.8 and the 10-24 but after purchasing the R6 I was spent out, do you recommend any lens for me……………….?

    I've had the XT2, XPro3, XT3 and XH2 and I've not found any of them gave me anything close to the XT1 which is why they're all gone barring the XH2 which is ready to box up and sell now as well. For the majority of my pro work I'm back to Canon with the 6D and EOS R (both very underrated cameras) but I've kept hold of my XT1 and XPro1 & still use them for work as well as personal work. 16mp holds up very well even now, I don't need more if my composition is right. Yes the fuji AF etc. is far better but they peaked with the sensor and lost the magic since. The XH2 is probably my final farewell to modern fuji bodies but my XT1 they'll have to prise it out of my dead hand!

    I have an X-T1, but I gotta dissagree with the "best value for money" part.
    color science is one thing, and completely subjective, so at large it's irrelevant. Let's try to judge things that are objective then : resolution, burst rate, dynamic range, noise levels, video resolution, framerates and codecs, body design and price on the used market. Then we'll add color science and overall "look" of the images as a point of preference.
    On resolution, the X-T1 isn't bad, 16MP is still pretty nice, but it's still a sub 20MP camera, which would be considered "low resolution today".
    Dynamic range and noise isn't bad either, but it's not exceptional. There is cameras from 2008 that outperform the X-T1 on noise and DR. At higher ISOs the X-T1 (and X-Trans II cameras at large) have a tendancy to really mess up skin tones and make all faces look like yellow clay.
    Burst rate is okay, 8fps is plenty good and the buffer is alright. Problem is that the autofocus is pretty damn slow if you're using AF-C. I would even say unreliable. After using an X-T1 for 3 years, I have absolutely no confidence in the X-T1's ability to find focus in AF-C mode, and would much rather use AF-S in pretty much all situations. Focus control isn't great either : no joystick, no touch screen, you need to click a button to open the focus point selection menu. It really is an AF-S + focus & recompose camera.
    Video on the X-T1 is useless.
    Color science is nice, but it's not the best color science I've used in a camera either. That title would go to either the Nikon D700 or Canon 5D classic, then the X-Trans III cameras. I think my Z6 comes 4th, and I'd put my X-T1 5th. It's nice but a little too much. It fits some situations REALLY well, but clearly not all of them. And it all falls apart the moement you do low light or high ISO.
    prices went up quite a bit recently, I picked up mine for 280€, but prices are closer to 380/400€ now. It's not bad, but it's not great either.
    On a pure bang for buck / value perspective, I think that the X-T1 is decent, but not great. There is other cameras that I would consider to be MUCH higher up on the list. One of those is the X-T2.
    Take an X-T1, and fix EVERY problem it could have :
    - 24MP so resolution whiners are happy
    - 2 stop better DR and 1 stop better high ISO, overall putting that sensor in the modern era (for me)
    - reliable AF-C, customizable AF-C modes, more focus points and a joystick to control it
    - increased burst to 11fps with the grip (or 14fps electronically)
    - video that could be used for high end production, having oversampled 4K with F-Log, as well as 120p slow motion HD (which can also be used with F-Log)
    - improvements to make it a more dependable body : higher refresh rate EVF, double card slots, better sealing and more resilient grip tapes
    - color science that is a little more neutral so it can be used in more situations, which still keeping the Fuji look of the RAW files (bets of both worlds before going in teh sterile X-Trans IV)
    - can be had for a little under 500€ nowadays, so just a little over the X-T1.
    Now if you want to find THE best bang for buck camera, you can look at DSLRs. I was able to get a Nikon D300 (8fps, super good trackin AF, decent 12MP sensor with one of my favourite color science ever put in a Nikon DX body) for right under 60€ on MPB with 30k clicks on, I was able to get a Canon 5D classic (still on MPB) for 94€, which will give you some of the nicest files I've ever come across.
    Don't get me wrong, the X-T1 is a reeeeally god camera (there is a reason why I still have mine after all, even after buying other Fuji cameras (even other X-Trans II cameras like my X100S)), but calling it the best value / cost effect camera EVER is really not even close to the truth.

    I have an X70 with the same sensor and an XT-2 with the next generation (and still very nice sensor) and my daughter still has and uses her XT-1. Never got to the point of feeling I needed to upgrade.

    I cannot help to notice but you mention presets. If so maybe part of the look is in big part from your worlkflow from the interpretation in your raw converter? I have had not many cameras to compare but although very pleasing the results from my Fujifilm X100S (same sensor as your X-T1) were digital, in a lovely and mature sense; and for film my Canon and Fujifilm cameras had it, in its lovely and mature way.

    • @ChrisOrange
      @ChrisOrange  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh yeah, the presets really help, but they still have to work in line with the sensor and how it converts the colours. I just line the way the xt1 performs all round.

    Thank you for this video. I have had the X-T1 since it first came out - upgraded from the X100s (because it didn't have interchangeable lenses) which I took all over Italy and got excellent captures of my trip. Seeing this made me want to get back into the X-T1 again. Question for you: what lens do you primarily use with yours? I have a Fujinon 18-135mm but am looking at getting more of a prime lens - perhaps the XF35mmF2? Also, many thanks for sharing your presets - what a terrific price for all your hard work! Happily purchased your set. I enjoy your channel and always feel inspired to pick my cameras up after watching.

      @ChrisOrange  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, thanks so much for the kind comment 😊 and for buying the presets. Glad you got the discount price! I am a big user of prime lenses, and at the moment I don't own any zooms. I prefer a smaller prime lens that has a lot of quality. The XF35mm F2 is a lovely lens, there's a review on my channel if you're wanting to see it more. My favourite older prime from Fujifilm is the 35mm 1.4 as it has beautiful rendering - it's quite slow to focus, but if you're not in a hurry, it's worth it.

    X-T1 vs. X-H1 ?! Which is the better buy ? On the used market, they are VERY close in price..

      all depends on whether you are wanting it for stills or video. XH1 is a hybrid and has great video functions, whereas XT1 has rubbish video capability

    Just bought one the other day, second hand but in very good condition. Using it with a lot of old Nikkor prime lenses. Very happy! The X-T1 really invites me to take pictures. It's like analogue again but digital. And with beautiful colours. Thx for your videos and sharing your skills.

    Hi Chris, I knew you couldn’t live without the X-T1! 😁I am not surprised either it is a brilliant camera. I am considering trading in my X-T2 to go back to the 1, there is something magical about that sensor! 👍🏻

      @@ChrisOrange I do really like the X-T2, I sold my X-T5 and bought that and the X-E4 and love this set up. I have just checked to see if I could trade in for the X-T1 and I would have to pay £40 to go back to it! It’s mad that the X-T1 is more expensive than the later model! 🤷

    The X-T10 has the same sensor as the X-T1 and is smaller and lighter which may make it better for travel. However, the X-T1 is built much better, is weather sealed and its buttons/dials are better positioned.

    • @ChrisOrange
      @ChrisOrange  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I think the X-T1 is just right in terms of all its features and handling. I enjoy using the X-T10, but not all the dials are the same as I like the positioning of the X-T1

    • @ChrisOrange
      @ChrisOrange  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yeah, exactly. I think the X-T1, and any of their cameras with the early sensors are more filmic, and so you can feel like they're film cameras.

      I contacted the buyer of my X-T1 yesterday if he might consider to part ways with it again - and as he recently bought an X-Pro1 that he prefers, the X-T1 is now on its way back to me 😂
