    According to writer and director Andrew Niccol, the filmmakers worked with actual gunrunners in the making of this movie. The tanks lined up for sale were real, and belonged to a Czech arms dealer, who had to have them back to sell to another country. They used a real stockpile of over three thousand AK-47s, because it was cheaper than getting prop guns.

    • @RabidNemo
      @RabidNemo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It wasn't really AK-47s It was a different type of rifle that looked similar but still

      I watched this movie probably half a dozen times it it was just so fascinating and I think in the commentary they said that they actually had like weapons inspectors from nato come down because they could see all the tanks from satellite and they got worried.

    Devin, What do you have to understand about Yuri's wife. She never asked about where the money came from until she found out where the money came from. ---------- She tells you why she had to bring down Yuri and become the one weapon that could stop him in his tracks. ----------- She failed at being a model, she failed at being an artist, she's failed at being a wife and mother. --------- But she couldn't fail at being a human being. -------- PArt of being a human is trying to ease the suffering of others. -------- When you are perpetrating that suffering or an accomplice to it you have to make your greatest effort to stop it. -------- Thus she had to try to stop Yuri.

    Amazing movie.
    Those piles of guns they show in Beirut, are real. The director found out that ordering 3,000 real guns from the local area was so much cheaper than importing prop guns from the states, they had to buy real guns. They had them destroyed afterwards. Some of the tanks they borrowed for filming, actually had a time limit to be returned because they were being sold to Libya.
    What I love most about Yuri's character, is his reasoning... "Because I'm good at it"

    *TRIVIA* Because there was no cooperation with the US military or American studios, this film was independently made, with production based in South Africa. The cost of prop guns was more than the price tag of real guns, so 3000 real AK47s were purchased, and 50 tanks were hired from real arms dealers for the production. Purchases were sold back at a discount. The Russian Antonov plane was also hired from an arms dealer. It crashed soon after production, killing everyone on board. 'Colonel Southern' was a nod to the dubious 'Colonel Oliver North' who was implicated in the illegal sale of weapons in Iran. The character of Colonel Southern is voiced by Donald Sutherland.

      Really makes ya wonder. All the guns in the world yet they still murder a million with machetes. Do the guns even matter then?
      Without talking melee in ancient history... another was super recent at the India/Chinese border, a skirmish that nobody wants to hear of. Stick and stones, man. Sleeping in the mountains. No guns because that can easily make everything hot and nobody wants another world war. A shot fired or sending back up then nobody coulda ignored it. I'm just glad they sent the Chinese packing. Who knows why the Chinese testing their resolve like that. Probably just the old claim of some of India, Korea and Japan as ancient lost property. lol

    Lord of War is (loosely) based on a real life Russian Arms dealer. Other characters included were borrowed from real life (the Marine Colonel Southern was a play on the name of LtCol North. Oliver North was involved in the Iran Contra Scandal back in the 1980s). The most probable source for the inspiration of the Russian Arms dealer was a man named Viktor Bout.

    One of Nicholas Cage's best movies is Bad Lieutenant. It's not well known but a cult classic of sorts.

    Should check out War dogs. Similar kind of theme, but more humour. You'd like it.

    This was loosely based on real events and the man at the end of the movie who gets him out is supposed to be Ollie North

    Staying with the theme of arms dealing you should check out War Dogs with Jonah Hill.

    You should check out "American Made" with Tom Cruise. It's about how the US basically started the Columbia drug trade.
