As an Austrian I have to say it is amazing how you sound very Australian but at the same time German as well. It has such a charme!!! Thank you for all your great content, I love hanging with you 😊
Hello from india ... I've been watching all of your vlogs. I had zero plants a year ago, and now I have 100 plus plants, and it boosted interest in me about growing plants. You played a bigger part in transpairing my home into a beautiful greenhouse..
I love these videos where you show the entire journey with a plant! Even when it doesn't always go to plan. Really shows how long it can take to grow a plant up a mosspole.
I agree, it is a great approach to see the plant development and appreciate the time it must take you Jan. Thanks, SPG, fast becoming my favourite indoor plant TH-cam channel..
This is a great reminder that patience is key for me. So often we expect plants to be shooting leaves out all the time and growth rates can vary widely. Beautiful plant and thanks for the progress video. As usual I always learn something.
I've bought so many plants from J&S Plant Pickers, they usually have a nice selection of more sought after plants for a good price, and they've always been in great shape. I actually just bought a luxurians x crystal like 20 minutes ago 😅😅
Beliso e incredibile ce crescono le piante slo con le foto o video un si scorge della loro crescita dato che uno le vede tutti i giorni non se ne accorge
Hello Jan. I love your videos. Long time subscriber here. But for some reason I click on your channel sometimes and it doesn’t say “subscribed” so I have to click on it again. Does anyone else have this issue? Anyway keep up the great content. You have inspired many moss poles in my home 🌱🧤💚
Thank you :) mm not sure but YT gives me these handy little symbols next to your username that show me that you have subscribed :) so maybe it's just a glitch every now and then! :)
Lucky you don't have to pay extra for quarantine, here in WA is very very strict, cheap plant can costs hundreds with postage and the custom processing.
Definitely gives me realistic expectations. Thank you. I see your plants sometimes and it's a double edged sword... both inspired and disheartened at same time😅❤
I'm having a hard time with moss moss poles. Last summer I put a monstera on it but whenever a new node grows, the root from it goes it and then after some day it turns brown and rot/dry. I've always kept it as moist as I would it with the soil and never crunchy (it's one of those with the back covered so doesn't try too quick) so I don't know if I kept it too wet or too dry. Now I started to remove some moss so that it is less dense and more airated (honestly much much less denser than yours) hoping for the best, so we'll see. But anyone has any help/recomendation?
Very interesting experience with your P. esmeraldense. I bought a baby one online about 8-9 months ago. I've sort of neglected it since then. It's still in its original pot, no pole and it's outside on the balcony (it's protected from the wind and direct sun though). It's doubled in size! So now I'm thinking of giving it a pole now. I'm in Sydney too so the growing conditions may not be ideal but not harsh either. I think it's quite a tough plant. Even it's been outside, I've had no issue with the plant whatsoever.
I think shock is a bit overrated. Plants go through changing conditions all the time. They always come out of this stronger. Even if shock exists, plants don't know difference between different shocks. It it's already "shocked" during shipping, best use that opportunity to repot it.
It's recycled shredded paper ... I think when it comes to packaging there are much bigger fish to fry like WHY IS ALL FRESH PRODUCE IN THE SHOPS WRAPPED IN PLASTIC
I've got two questions please - First: Have you ever had mold in your soil mix? I've recently mixed new arroid mix that is as chunky as yours, and then I repotted some of my arroids into clear pots (as you inspired me to aquire for my plants). Now there are much larger air pockets in the soil mix, and I do see mold forming like little white/grey fuzzy stars. What to do, or is that normal? I know they're not harmful to the plants... And second question: You say you water the roots no matter where they are. When you transplant a new little plant into a new pot onto a new moss pole, there won't be roots in that pole for at least two to four weeks. But in your videos you say that you only initially water the roots in the pot, after that you only water the moss pole. How do you water in that transitional state? You wouldn't let those roots in the pot dry out, would you? Do you keep the moss pole moise with a sprayer for the first weeks or do you really put the bottle on top, making sure you water as much as it needs to reach the pot, as well? Thanks and regards from Germany. It's really hard to find large piece perlite over here! ...
Hey :) haven't had any issues with mould but just imagine your pot would be back .. you wouldn't see the mould & it wouldn't bother you. Unless the plant shows signs of suffering I wouldn't be worried. Regarding the second question - I do a combination of both, or choose one or the other depending on the time available etc. As long as you keep the roots moist it will work :) I'd say in 90% of instances I use the bottle upside down technique because it's clean & easy. I just water enough for the pot to be passively watered by the pole too :)
I've been watching you non stop everyday since I found you this week. You influenced me to get moss poles 😅 and it's been a busy past few days getting them set up. Thank you!
Beautiful plant. i have two very small ones, tomorrow I am going to give them a repot and pole…maybe then they will put on some growth….fingers crossed.
Hi Jan, I use a Solo 10 litre battery operated spray pump to apply fertiliser to my greenhouse plants as well as my outside moss poles, it delivers a good amount accurately and efficiently.
I have 15l ryobi one :) but never as efficient as just turning the misters on or getting the garden hose :D so sometimes i’m just too lazy to actually fertilise
The moss pole will enable me to propagate/chop it without setting it back in progress due to the root system it will build within the pole. It's also an 'insurance policy' in case of rot within the pot.
I will risk with the opinion that it is one of the best looking philodendrons and I wasn't aware I need one 😂 and what a cool journey through three apartments, I wish you success with this plant 🥰
Hi Jan! I just got an Esmeraldense too! A local shop had 3, and they said this is the second time in their five years of business they’ve had them, so of course I had to get one. I just got my first bottle of GT foliage focus. Do you flush the chunky mix occasionally? How much are you using per litre? I was going to start with 3 ML and see how that goes. 😊
Damnit my P. Esmeraldense got from my regular Nursery2U about 2 years ago does crap all… gave me 3 more leaves. Other plants grow like crazy but this plant is the slowest grower ever. Mind you it’s smaller than yours like seedling size so I might feel too bad compared to yours 😅
Perfect timing! I put my small esmeraldense on a moss pole last month, and you right in that it’s very slow growing! I love the pillowy leaves and can’t wait until next year 😂
I’m excited to see mine growing super large leaves 😁 I got mine early last year from Rusty’s Market here in Cairns. Already a big plant but I didn’t have it on a moss pole so, my next day off will be a moss pole day construction 😅 Thank you so much for the inspiration, Jan 😊
I was gritting my teeth watching you untamed that pot Omgosh lol my neck hurts Tying the petioles up may not be just aesthetic, if you’re moving them from blocking light to the lower leaves, I think that’s good too ya?
Plant mail can be such a gamble. Looks like you hit jackpot win with this beautiful ( but slow) Esmeraldense! The struggle is real whether to quarantine new additions. I'm lucky to have a laundry room with great exposure that serves as my plant hospital/ quarantine area for now, but I'm eventually going to need those windows serving forever homes as my collection grows larger😹 So even if you do have space to quarantine, eventually you won't. 😻
Hello from Atlanta GA! Been subscribed and watching for a year now! Thanks for all the amazing tips and my moss poles wouldn’t be where they are without your tips! Need a esmerada too!
Perfect timing! Just ordered my first batch of plant mail- I was just thinking that I needed to look into how to acclimate! Lots of great info here- thanks so much!!

I’m so glad you said this because I knew there was another underlying accent in there but couldn’t put my finger on it. Vielen Dank :)
Thank you:)
If I may add: there’s also a tinge of gay accent somewhere in there… it makes him all the mote distinct ❤❤❤ Love it!!! Hihi.
You have no idea how long I’ve been wanting to say this or ask but don’t want to be offensive or anything lol

so glad you got a Rode mic. lol. that old footage is kind of hard to listen to with the audio clipping.
It’s a DJI but yes the audio quality is so much better 🙌 those mics ain’t cheap tho!!

Off to buy the gear to make my first moss poles this weekend! We have 15 foot ceilings in one lounge room just BEGGING for some BIIIIIIIIG plants!
Happy growing :)

Damn :/ that’s really annoying for you but suppose it’s done for a good reason
4:18 that packing was a complete mess but I've never had a plant show up in such good shape. Wow! Beautiful 🎉
Yeah apparently all the shredded paper helps with overheating 🤷🏻♂️ well as long as the plant is happy, I’m happy :)
Jan, she’s a beauty! Thank you for taking the time to follow the journey of some individual plants 🪴

Well, you do you :) I always say, there's not just one right way of doing things :) if you want to do it all at once, go for it :)
The amount of waste in the packaging is shameful. I've bought plenty of plants online that had much less and arrived in perfect condition.
It's recycled shredded paper ... I think when it comes to packaging there are much bigger fish to fry like WHY IS ALL FRESH PRODUCE IN THE SHOPS WRAPPED IN PLASTIC

Hi ! Where are you buying your plastic pots ? :) . I cant seem to find them in that size in Denmark :(

Where do you buy your anthurium from? Looking for a good online source that ships to USA
I buy them all locally from australian growers so can’t help here, sorry :)
Absolutely love how truthful you are!!! for those of us that are plant addict and have far too many plants. Isolation is not as easy as it sounds.❤❤❤❤
It’s kinda impossibke but so far, so good :)
I am a fan, watches your videos everyday and often gets excited seeing new videos...❤
Thank you:)
In hindsight since it’s such a slow grower would you have put it on a small grow vertical instead ?
Could have, but would have probably made no difference :)
I have a Question, Now that is in the greenhouse, is 100% necesary the moss pole? I love how big the leaves have gotten since you got it in the mail 😍
The moss pole will enable me to propagate/chop it without setting it back in progress due to the root system it will build within the pole. It's also an 'insurance policy' in case of rot within the pot.

Do you use something else now that vitality plus has been discontinued?
Still have a tiny but left but looking for alternatives if anyone has a suggestion :)

Yeah some specimen are just not meant to be 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Most of us don't have a space for rehabbing plants...
Yet all the advice online is ‘isolate your plant’ … so everybody just says it but doesn’t do it?:D haha
It's good enough to have a plastic bin with a cheap growlight on top to place anywhere it can fit 👍
Is this the narrow form?
I have no idea there even was a narrow form 🤷🏻♂️ often leaf shapes are subject to growing conditions anyway
Perfect timing! I put my small esmeraldense on a moss pole last month, and you right in that it’s very slow growing! I love the pillowy leaves and can’t wait until next year 😂

Hi, wie bekommst du es immer hin dass dein Moosstab so schön grün wird? Von was ist das abhängig?? 🧐
Light exposure & keeping it moist will trigger algae (not harmful) :)
