    Thank you so much for this video. As always, all of your videos are excellent for EmComm and portable set-up. To me, the best part of this video was your quick review of the FT-891. I have a FT-817ND and a FT-897D. Both of those are great rigs, and my first two radios. But, I've considered the FT-891 to replace them and the only thing causing me to pause is the FM VHF/UHF portion you mentioned in your video. I will likely bite the bullet and sell my 817 and 897 and purchase the 891, but your videos always make me think.... Thanks Jason!!!

    Nice setup for digital modes that I think is the easiest way to build. I will see how it will work for a KX2 my hotel travel radio. Sorry an 891 is too big for this operation. But thank your for your great videos.

    Another, awesome video Jason! I continue to learn more with every video you produce! One question...what cable are you using with the Sabrent Sound Card for interface with your radio (I am using my FT857...so I assume the 891 has the same type of data port - 6 pin Mini Din)

    Excellent Videos! Thanks. I have run into a problem though. I have a recent download (Last week) of the V2 Build-a-Pi and have JS8Call working using pulseaudio that I installed using the Preferences - Add/Remove Software app (It wasn't installed with the build). When I have attempted to get PAT /ARDOP configured for my setup (Pi3+, USB to a FT-991A) I cannot find the audio controls that you show in the video above using the right click of the speaker icon in the tray. I get the Pulseaudio mixer and cannot find the output to the radio (built-in USB on the 991) device to set the TX level. The RX works fine as does the rig control through flrig. If you have time or there is someone else out there that can get me re-railed, I'd like to at least get my nose pointed in the right direction. Many Thanks! KL7UT Ray

      from the terminal, run 'alsamixer' to access your sound controls. F6 will cycle through different cards.

    If this rig is like the 991 the two usb silicon devices are 0 CAT and 1 the built in to the radio sound card... when using my 991's built in sound card, there is also a D.VOX option that can key the rig when audio is presnt at that device. I wonder if that rig has the same. So you may not even need the usb sound card you got. The radio has one built in if it is like the 991.

    Jason, do you have the same options available in FLDigi when you hook up your FT-857D? The Power control, SQL control, etc...? Good job on the video.

      You have some control with the 857 in FLRIG but not as much. It will do the basics....change mode, change band, turn on split, and change VFO but that is about the limit with the 857.

    Love it - everything works as you showed. When you set the volume with PULSE and then exit the PULSE control application, the input volume works fine. HOWEVER, as soon as you exit JS8 and come back in, the volume gets reset to the system volume. I'm not sure why even use PULSE unless you want to use PAT at the same time which is unlikely. Any way of making the PULSE volume stick for the JS8 application?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No way to make it stick that I am aware of. That's why I mentioned it in the video. The reason I do it this way is so I can leave my Pat ARDOP settings alone once I have them dialed in. I find it easier to adjust JS8Call than Pat. 73, de KM4ACK

    So I know this video is over a year old, but I thought I might give some insight as too why the pulse audio setting does not hold after you stop the app and restart. That number you see in pulse audio after the name, the 28161 is what is called the pid or process is of the application you are adjusting the sound level for. That is a unique identifier for that instance of the app. So when you exit the app and restart it will get a new pid and pulse audio knows nothing about it. This is why the levels don't stay around.

    I have not used the portable FT-891/Signalink/Raspi 400 setup in quite some time. I pulled them out tonight to get some practice and could not get the Signalink usb to show up in the Com Port window of FLRIG. Last time I used this portable set-up, it worked. I have spent the last three hours trying to figure out how to get FLRIG to initialize, but can't figure it out. The Two selections you speak of do not show up in the drop down list in the Xcvr menu in the configuration window. Any suggestions,,,,,

    • @KM4ACK

      The signalink will never show up in FLRIG. It is a sound card. FLRIG is for CAT control of the radio. You. should be able to select your radio in port in FLRIG. If you need more help, post in the forum and we will do our best to get you going. groups.io/g/KM4ACK-Pi/topics

So I stopped flrig and setup wxjtx to use the USB ports but it doesn’t show the /dev/serial ports in the drop down. Is my install bad? I have an rpi 4 I can try. Thanks and 73!

    Hey Jason. I’m having problems getting rig control within the pat program. I’m using a FT 891 with a Sabrent sound card and following the directions in this video. When I select item 2 in the pat menu, before the modem starts and the ARDOP GUI starts, I get 4 lines of errors in the home/pi/pat menu/start-pat-ARDOP: line, 62, 35, 48, 41 /usr/local/bin/rigctl: no such file or directory. I’m using Flrig for cat control and it’s up and running fine. I’m sure this is something simple but I can’t figure it out. Thanks for the assistance.

    Great video Jason!!! Thanks for sharing those tips!! Some of the software I am not familiar with and that was a big help. I didn't know what Pulse was for and that now has cleared that up. I do have a question though, are you running the Yaesu and the Pi without a Signalink??? Can you do that??? The reason I was asking, that would make my 817ND setup even more compact if I don't need the Signalink!! I don't know if you have seen my picture on Instagram, but I have the 817ND, then LDG Z817 auto tuner, then the Signalink and then the Pi in a, as someone called it, a pyramid configuration with bungee cords holding them together. Appreciate these videos, and would love to see a video of your setup, the rig, the Pi and whatever else you hook to it to do these. Keep up the good work Jason. 73 Juddie WD8WV

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. There is no signalink in this particular setup. It uses the USB sound card shown in the video instead. The difference here is that you have to control PTT via CAT because the USB sound card doesn't have VOX built in like the signalink does. Due to this, there are a couple of extra steps and a couple of differences in configuration. 73, de KM4ACK

      Don’t have my 891 in front of me but I think there is a digital gain settings in the menu. You might try adjusting it in addition to adjusting the audio with Alsamixer. In addition, there is a slider in FT8 that can be used to adjust levels.

    sound card: what cables do you use? do you use the data port on the back of the ft-891? I have an ft-891 and an Icom IC-7200. There is a problem configuring the IC-7200 with FLRIG, ie it doesn't work. The source of the problem seems to be the GPS conflicting with the driver/usb port for the IC-7200. Are you aware of this? It might be of interest to your viewers who choose to purchase the new IC-705 and want to run it with the pi, in case the same problem occurs with the new rig.
