Son to Dad on death bed "You looked worried. Are you scared?" Dad "Not scared of leaving this earth. Scared your mother will sell my ham shack rigs for what I told her I spent on them."
Something like that actually happened to a light friend of mine. I hadn’t heard from him for a few months. I decided to stop bye on a Monday between running my service calls as I was passing near his home. His brother-in-law was cleaning up from a yard sale they had over the weekend and informed me that he passed away about a week or two earlier. His equipment was sold for pennies on the dollar at a yard sale ran by his sister and brother-in-law. Funny thing about five years earlier he had willed his equipment to a mutual friend of ours so that very thing wouldn’t happen. I guess they decided not to honor as will.
I remember a talk by Riley Holingsworth where he stated that if you hear that he has passed away, rush to his home because his wife believes that all of his radios cost $100 or less.
@@black75powderor they hadn't even looked at the will yet. I could easily see people not even thinking the ham radios would be in the will when they have no idea what they're worth.

Absolutely the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. Jason needs an award named in his honor! However, I am not sure I am going to tell my wife this video exists! LOL! Great job Jason!🤣
Json, you have made a huge mistake, let me explain the _correct_ way to do this. I got my license long before I met my wife, so she knew nothing about radios, and I had been inactive since we were married. One day she came home from work and announced that her workplace has some ham radio equipment in the EOC, so, she needs to get the license. I helped her a little learning stuff for the test, she took the test and passed, after which she promptly announced 'we need new ham radio equipment'. She chose an ic-7300, I chose the antennas, she chose the fancy desk mike, and we went shopping. We do travel a fair amount in areas outside of cellular coverage, so she decided we needed to add some 2 meter gear to the RV, and a couple hand held units showed up. Today, if I think some new equipment would look good in the shack, I dont buy it, I just show her a picture, and explain how great it is, then wait. Usually shows up in a month or two. I really have no idea how much she has spent on ham radio gear, and guess what, I dont care :)
OK Jason, when you have to start selling radios to sleep back INSIDE the house, let me know. I'll grab a couple of those hundred dollar radios to help you out! 🤣
Accurate. Followed by the corollary, The 48 Hour Rule. If an acquistion finds its way into the house, as long as it is in its typical spot (ham bench, for example) for 48 hours you get to say upon questioning: "That old thing? It's been around forever."
LOL! I've been here with my wife, she had the same comments about the money spent. My response was... Let's go add up the money you have in shoes in our walk-in closet, where I had to add 2 more rows of shelves, also, lets look in the hall closet where I had to add more shelves, and lets look in the daughters bedroom closet, and the shelves I had to put up in the garage... I also reminded her that SHE can only wear one pair at a time. :oD
My girlfriend (now wife) gave me a ft5dr for my birthday. When I saw it I was scared of how much money she paid. And the surprise was even bigger when I found out it was $350 and it was brand new from Black Friday. That's why she's my wife now 😃😂
The next radio you get, have a buddy deliver it to your house, and make sure your wife hears him say "Thanks for letting me borrow the radio." Just make sure you can trust your buddy. Great video. 73 KF0JPR
My lovely wife has handbags, I have radios. We both appreciate our success in "sneaking it in", but occasionally we surprise each other with something they wanted but was a lovely gift.
My mother had a load of handbags and shoes (matching of course). I haven't done anything with them since she died...I was going to give them to a charity shop, but my mind has started to boggle about them!
@@KM4ACK My approach was to tell her that amateur radio was a time-consuming hobby and that we often had meetings with other radio operators and whether she would like to join in the conversation and participate or whether she would rather just bring the salad over. My spouse has a ballpark on what these things cost, but she's also just not concerned about it. The only thing she's ever asked me about in a concerned voice was, "We're not going to end up with a 300 foot tower on the roof, right?" Oh! She brought up bags! I used to make fun of the number of purses my wife had until I became an EMT and a ham 😂 The key, as with radios, is to keep them in different areas - the truck, the Jeep, the desk, the garage, various closets and tool benches.
About a month back I had to remove the 'shack' from it's former location to a temp one. She helped. Noting there were about nine different rigs on the bench, and twelve more on the shelfs, and about twenty more on the back shelves. She looked at me and ask "Why so many radios?" I looked at her and said "these nine are the normal used on the station. These twelve are the working ones in the tub collection and those (pointing toward the back shelves are the rest of the tube collection that require repairs. She then said "what are the ones on the shelves in the garage then?" "Those are yet to be looked into to see what is wrong." So I have the same issues, but I never bother asking how much the box of beads and stuff she just came home with cost. That way I keep the issue of my "Problem" quiet. So I have not put the HF stuff back up, I will as soon as the remodel is complete. (oh at last count seventy five tube radios, twelve hybrid, and transistor and three others. There are four Marshall Amps which I might sell.) Peace

NEVER complain about what a wife spends on, Art supplies, Clothes, Shoes, or when she wants to eat out for fear she starts complaining about your spending. I OWE it all to her for seldom asking what a radio item costs. She is a General and has and idea, but she also likes to buy other things as well. The HRO and DXEnginnering websites only show you half of the price you will pay for equipment. Many of us face the 'wife tax" when purchasing radios and related items...which is far higher than any government tax.
When she placed her hand on her hip I knew you were in trouble. I actually kind of like her idea about diamonds. Think about it, they don’t get discontinued, don’t need a cage, or a charger and you can brag about the price without the wife complaining about it! LOL Loved the video!

I really like the Tac-Comm Tactical Radio Carrier concept to carry and protect mobile rigs, but by the time AUD to USD conversions are done plus shipping they get a little expensive in Australia. *edit* of course being an amateur radio operator you should be aware of the formula for the ideal number of radios to own. Where I = ideal & C = current number you own... I=C+1 I tell my wife this formula is written into the license document :-)
There is a saying that getting a Concealed Carry License is a license to spend a lot of money on holsters. A ham license is a license to spend a bunch of money on radios, bits, parts, and accessories.
She’s a keeper My Minister for Finance Entertainment and Shoes showed me a guitar she thought was really pretty. Tobacco burst Telecaster with a Pearl fleck scratch plate and maple neck. I had been looking at the Michael Kelly 1953 models with that exact confit for some time. I took that as permission / approval. Now the decree has been passed that there are no more acquisitions until every “project” or “broken dreams” have either been fixed or flicked No more gear. No more microphones, guitars, amps, radios, stuff including free is allowed in the house until what is already here is working and has a use. I can apply for exceptions, but it’s really got to be a good reason / value propositions. My workshop is going to be busy this Aussie summer Might have to start a “proper” GoogleTubes channel, though my mouth may be more suited to Rumble Better get off the TH-cam’s now and get started. Coffee’s drunk. Tube guitar amps don’t fix themselves
Update: Jason, please tell your wife two things for me. If she wants a divorce I am available and I recently won a tidy sum of money in the lottery. I hope this doesn’t add fuel to the fire. 73’ - This is only a joke.
"This may be the dumbest thing I've ever done..." Yes, yes it was! HAHA! It reminds me of a meme that I've seen for bikes, tools, and other things; it applies to ham radio as well: "When I die, I hope that my wife doesn't sell my radios for what I told her they cost." At least in your case she might not under-sell your stuff. ;-) 73 and Good Luck! -Scott
My thoughts exactly. Not just one: sewing machine, expensive plastic template set, tubs of fabric. Quilters can easily smoke hams in spending especially on the little bags of fabric. A long arm machine I saw in a store was $42K. Tower anyone? Honey, let's just split the fun money. Ouch.
That is the coolest idea you have had in all those years. You always surprise me with your videos, but I'm not that brave to face my wife and two daughters. Ham radio prices will be left on a piece of paper attached to my testament.

Art Supplies. LOL That is exactly what my wife said.. LOL
You should see the collection of glazes in her pottery studio 😜 I seldom ask the cost because I don't want to know
@@KM4ACK Oh I get it. My wife has paints, pens, pencils.. I gave up keeping up with it. I have nowhere near what you have. But what I do have and get at times she is like "Oh lord I guess your taking me to Hobby Lobby"
I have been learning CW and I have my eye on a CW QRP radio(I have none YET!) but may not be allowed to buy one. But if she EVER needs ANY art supplies or want to eat out, she gets it with NO questions asked. I only pray that I am allowed to get the radio I want in return. No guaranty's.
Fantastic. Dang.. no biscuits. I will say my XYL and I talk about buying radios. I say I need this. It's thus much. And she asks if it can wait a week or two or if I need it right away. She somehow finds a way to make it work. I'm keeping he!
OK, I gotta admit, when I moused over this in the TH-cam main page and the caption just said, "This may be the dumbest thing I've ever done! Stick around and we'll get right to it!"...best intro ever :-D
We have a joke in our house. Its from Lord of the Rings when Pippin make a bunch of noise that brings in the Orcs. "Fool of a Took! Throw yourself in next time, and rid us of your stupidity".
Fine line between bravery and crazy. You might have crossed it letting your wife know how much things cost.
Long-time subscriber here asking for more camera setups in the kitchen, please! The light is fantastic and everything looks great!
Noted!
Awesome Video. Even had my wife rolling her eyes & saying Good grief, you guys sure spend a lot of money on that stuff😂
Can’t remember the last time I laughed out loud at a ham radio video…. This video was awesome, great job putting this together!!
The real challenge would be bringing the wife to Dayton next year!
She came to Orlando and Huntsville this year but didn't make Dayton. She will be in Orlando again come February :-)
That is soooooo funny! Hilarious. We can all pray for understanding spouses! 👍😂😂
Hi Jason, I love this video and you have a wonderful wife. I think all of us know these ‘problems’ :-) You are doing a great job for us radio amateurs with your TH-cam channel. Thank you! 73, DL1GKK - Karl.
KM4ACK, this is the most relatable video I have ever seen in my life or will ever see. I do intend to go thru this exact same sequence maybe when I move to VP level!!! Kudos to you!!! Beautiful family, god bless man
The HRO and DXEnginnering websites only show you half of the price you will pay for equipment. Many of us face the 'wife tax" when purchasing radios and related items...which is far higher than any government tax.
So true!!
Ham radios are like shoes. Some are used for hiking, running, lounging around at home, going out for dinner, formal events, going to the beach....
can confirm title was not click bait. great foresight for my future.
When she placed her hand on her hip I knew you were in trouble.
I actually kind of like her idea about diamonds. Think about it, they don’t get discontinued, don’t need a cage, or a charger and you can brag about the price without the wife complaining about it! LOL
Loved the video!
YOUR WIFE AND MY WIFE NEED TO GET TOGETHER AND GO TO LUNCH 😂👋😎
My wife knows I own 1 radio. The rest i am just borrowing from a friend.
Boy you have a good "friend"
@@KM4ACK He said I could use them for as long as I like. Great guy
Awww, your wife is lovely. Congrats!!
Thank you!!
RIP for SK KM4ACK.
Great video. Thank you for this. Was fun and adorable.
Edit: I wish your wife would set the prices on radios.
Our pleasure!
Title should have been “don’t let your wife watch this” this is a hilarious video.
Jason, you did what every God fearing ham would never even THINK of doing... Why? When are we going to see those radios on the market? LOL
Now she knows her shopping budget for HER next shopping trip. lol lol lol 😂
This video was perfection. Thank you! Showing my wife lol
Okay, my friend, you are either brave or crazy? I didn't want my wife to see this video. I told her a cooking video when she asked what I was watching. Never give away our secrets. I really liked it when your wife's eyes got really big. Looks like she is going shoe shopping. All the best. 73s
😁
Hahahahahaha!!! Jason I thought you were smart :) You wife is a sweetheart!! Hope you live!!!! :o)
What did you do ‼️👀 I watched this away from Mrs. N but I know Mrs. P is going to talk to Mrs. N 😮. Game plan: “but Honey, Jason has more radios than me, I’m not as bad as he is.”
"I’m not as bad as he is" 😂
I started laughing when I saw the 705 was next.
I saw the cage and immediately thought, "Uh-oh, is that a 705?"
Just like fishing tackle... Saltwater, freshwater, live bait, artificial lures, and let's not forget the boat😅
Yeah, with all the ham gear and test equipment I've got, I'm still a good bit shy of a bass boat.
Boat: A hole in the water that you throw money into.
@@Biser10562 BOAT - acronym for bust out another thousand.
This is possibly the most entertaining Ham Radio video I've seen so far this year 🤣!
73
Thanks!
Priceless...pun intended. Don't wonder when she gets those new bags, shoes, and art supplies...where the $ came from...dangerous conversation my friend.
Jason-funniest video ever! Your wife is a hoot and so honest. Please thank her for playing along!
Will do. Thanks for watching
Oh man! You hit her with them all at once!
Just rip the band-aid off....at least it seemed like a good idea at the time. Turning on the camera was for my safety :-)
@@KM4ACK -- ROFL !!
Becky is listening as I watch this. I'm thankful she's a ham too, so she gets to use any of the of the new gear that we get 😉
Fun video!

I tell my wife this formula is written into the license document :-)
lol . . . OMG what a brave and honest man you are. P took it pretty well, lol. See you out there (maybe). 73 de Bill
There is a saying that getting a Concealed Carry License is a license to spend a lot of money on holsters. A ham license is a license to spend a bunch of money on radios, bits, parts, and accessories.
She’s a keeper
My Minister for Finance Entertainment and Shoes showed me a guitar she thought was really pretty. Tobacco burst Telecaster with a Pearl fleck scratch plate and maple neck.
I had been looking at the Michael Kelly 1953 models with that exact confit for some time. I took that as permission / approval.
Now the decree has been passed that there are no more acquisitions until every “project” or “broken dreams” have either been fixed or flicked
No more gear. No more microphones, guitars, amps, radios, stuff including free is allowed in the house until what is already here is working and has a use.
I can apply for exceptions, but it’s really got to be a good reason / value propositions.
My workshop is going to be busy this Aussie summer
Might have to start a “proper” GoogleTubes channel, though my mouth may be more suited to Rumble
Better get off the TH-cam’s now and get started.
-Scott
This is the Best Thing I Have Ever Seen!!!❤😂
Anyone else have a XYL with a quilting hobby? Don’t start adding up the quilting and art supplies. 🤣
Ouch.
I cant believe you did it either ! She will NEVER let this go...
That is the coolest idea you have had in all those years. You always surprise me with your videos, but I'm not that brave to face my wife and two daughters.
Ham radio prices will be left on a piece of paper attached to my testament.
