After her death, her brother Richard said "The world has lost the voice of an angel, but I lost my best friend." Her voice and his arrangements have no equal.

Karen Carpenter was an Angel 😇 sent from Heaven and left us way too soon! One of the most beautiful voices ever heard! The compositions are the direct result of her brother Richard Carpenter who really played to Karen’s strengths as a singer! I LOVE ❤️ the music of The Carpenters! RIP Karen!

She called herself "a drummer who sings". Incredible modesty.

Frank Sinatra was once asked if there was anyone he would pay to see sing and without hesitation he said, "Karen Carpenter."

So good to see you appreciate great music and singing. Karen was also an amazing, stand out drummer.

Thank you for your reaction. Yes, her voice - and the instruments, along with the lyrics - the Carpenters were very special! I appreciate your understanding of music - and how you could HEAR what's happening in the background where others would mainly be focused on the lead singer. Thank you again. If you could, I would appreciate if you would react to their version of the Beatles song, "HELP!" live at BBC 1971 - I believe Karen was amazing! Not only her vocals, but when she was on the drums...wow!

This is Carpenters with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is a compilation album by American duo the Carpenters. It was released on December 7, 2018, by A&M Records and Universal Music Enterprises. The album features Carpenters' "original vocal and instrumental tracks" accompanied by new orchestral arrangements by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

When you pair Karen's voice with a well written song and a beautiful arrangement it's absolute gold.

She also sang at the lowest range for a female contralto which was very rare.

In the intro, I'd say that was an oboe. Then French horns & trombones joined in.

Yes, Richard was/ is great at arranging especially for Karen's voice. She had a contralto voice that I've read could cover better than 3 octaves. Also I've watched a musician from England who runs studio and live recordings of her voice through a computer program that showed she had perfect pitch and the only difference between the recordings was the length she held notes. Also remember this was before auto tune. She was known as one take Karen to those that worked with her, because she got it right the first time. Something you didn't mention and may not know is that she considered herself a drummer that could sing. Her true love was drumming and profesional drummers have stated that she was very good. Also there is a story that at a restaurant there was a chance meeting with John Lennon who came to her and said, I have to tell you love you have a beautiful voice.

Interesting fact: Karen's vocal on this track is the first time she sang the song - she was reading the lyrics Richard had scribbled on a napkin.

Another interesting fact it was originally named "Groupie (Superstar)". Richard Carpenter heard the song for the first time when Bette Midler performed it on The Tonight Show. He changed some of the lines to make it a little less risqué and they recorded it. Midler was not happy and made comments about goody 2 shoes Karen.

I was 26 when they released the album "Ticket To Ride" I had no idea who they were but for 1 of the record clubs I was entitled to 3 free albums so took "ticket To Ride" as 1. The first song was Ticket to Ride, and by the time it was 1/4 in I was in Love with the voice. I played the albums once and put them on 10.5 inch reel to reel. Now have put all the reel to reels on 1TB thumb drives (lossless format) still have the vinyls only played once on an excellent turn table.

When they toured England in 1972 Paul McCartney invited her and her brother to his studios where Paul was recording an Album for his brother( I had no idea PM had a brother). Paul told her she was his favorite female singer…..4 hours later Karen was doing press for their tour and was asked by reporter to respond to reviewers saying she had big hips. Yea, she had some pain.

We’re you aware this song was sung once & that was the recording - she read the lyrics off a napkin! Pretty remarkable! Also if you want to hear a song that opens with a French horn or fugal horn react to Barry Manilow’s Looks Like We Made It!

A lot of their songs were about hope and disappointment. Ironically it mimicked Karen's own life.

For many years, I thought of the string "Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby, oh Baby", which appears three times, was a weak part of an otherwise superlative song. I thought it was no more meaningful that "yeah, yeah, yeah", filler where story-advancing lyrics could not be thought of.
That changed when I found out what the song was about. I had no idea previously that it was the perspective of a "groupie" who had been a one-night stand (or two or three, or whatever) for a "superstar" with whom she "fell in love before the second show", but to whom she was just one of many like her.
Prior to knowing that, I thought her hopes of his return were realistic and might someday be fulfilled.
Now, when I hear the words, even though they are sung, I picture a naïve girl in panic on a phone call with the "superstar", who just wants to end the call and never hear from her again.
After trying to remind him of what he told her, that he loved her, and explaining her heartache to him, she is out of rationale appeals as he is about to hang up on her. "Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby, oh Baby!", she cries out to him.
With that interpretation, I think the poignant string of words advances the story very well.

Tragic to think of Karen's death depriving the world of 20-30 more years of their collaborations. 😢
