    Update: The Goal Zero regulated charging cable I mentioned on-screen actually didn't end up working for me. The plug seem slightly different even though I've seen multiple people say it charges their Jackery just fine. I plugged it in and nothing. The cable feels slightly loose when inserted into the Jackery so I'm not sure it even fits, but regardless didn't work for me. All that means is if I notice the Jackery occasionally draining I'll need to unplug the Jackery and then plug it back into the 12v. Not a huge deal and I just need to check it every few days. I'll remove the link from the description.
    Update 2: I actually don't do the pass through anymore as because the fridge barely draws any wattage once it's cold, the Jackery thinks there's nothing plugged into it so it shuts down after a while. I now just plug the fridge directly into the back 12v and will plug the Jackery into the front 12v when needed. That's why I like testing things before hitting the longer trips out West. Hope this helps!

      Hey Chris - The power pole at the campground provides power to the car, the car provides power to the Jackery and the Jackery provides power to the fridge as well as any other electronics.
      When there isn’t a campground hookup it then draws in the same order so pulls from the car which is replenished at a Supercharger.
      I do sometimes power the Jackery back up with two 100w solar panels if I’m in an area with abundant sunshine ☀️

    Nice drone video and great editing too. This campsite looks like it’s well appointed and very well taken care of. Having a 50amp source and nice restrooms is a big plus too. Just like Tesla, you’re getting pretty agile with this whole camping thing! Here’s to hoping you can find some more campsites this summer that are equally challenging tongue twisters. 😀

    Nice to see another camping video! Can't wait to see the westward tour!
    I remember when you'd have to charge much more than the car suggested because of the cargo box. Do you think the car has now factored in the cargo box in the state of charge at arrival calculation? There seems to be arguments about how the car calculates arrival state of charge (some say it's simply based on the ideal testing conditions and other say it's looking at all your previous driving and how much energy used to project future energy use - I'm in the later camp).

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Christina! I feel like the last two trips it has been quite accurate and I even arrived with slightly more than it estimated. There had to have been some sort of software update that now looks at a larger history of driving. I'm not 100% on this and won't know for sure until I start heading west, but the Smoky Mountain trip was a 4 hour + drive and it was right on whereas all my previous trips were off by up to 30%.

  • @MechayaAlta
    @MechayaAlta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice and clear video and description. Does the car know how much amperage to draw or do you set it? When you plugged into a 50 amp could it potentially draw 80% of that? Why do you need sentry when parked for your fridge? Shouldn’t a jackery 1500 cover you for several days?

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yep, it does know so I never have to set it. You could change it yourself though.
      As for Sentry Mode... I set it to always be on as a security precaution and so I can view the live camera views, but I also don't mind if it draws a small amount from the Tesla's battery each day. It's a small fraction of the overall 75kWh so I don't worry about it plus I also want the Jackery to almost always be full so I can use it to cook when I don't have another power source. Then I can use the car or solar to power it back up after cooking. I mainly need it for the ability to cook when off-grid. I do however usually keep myself within a 45 minute drive of a Supercharger so I can charge the car up every few days.
      Hope that helps explain it. Let me know if you have any other questions and thank you for watching.

  • @AndrewPiercy
    @AndrewPiercy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There's so much available space above your bed! Seems like the entire cargo box could fit. If you're ever in a pinch for range or wanting to cover more ground quicker you could probably remove it and put it in the back and put your bed on top of the cargo box and still have room to spare.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andrew! Thanks for watching! Unfortunately that would be tough to do on my own. They're not super easy to remove or put back especially with stuff in it. Good idea, but just not doable when out on the road solo. The amount of range loss isn't that much of an issue. For me it equates to an extra stop or two to Supercharge on really long travel days (over 6 hours) so I don't mind it 😀

    Hey Bryan, I need some Tesla Model Y travel advice. I don’t have a jackery yet (totally out of disposable cash since prepping for delivery - I protected with PPF, and upgraded my Y spoiler/auto frunk/trunk kick, installed charger in my Condo parking spot (that nearly killed me with easements, electrical for 140‘ from panel), and have to stop spending for this first trip). My objective is a 2 Wk trip out of my car (sleeping in safe lots), and I need to cook own food, no restaurants/fast food, nor camp sites that charge, with power to save money. Got a membership to anytime fitness for showers. Can you answer specifics to the following questions?
    1- Can I get an inverter and run the hot plate burner you have directly from my 12V plug? Or will that flip the fuse? The hot plate says it pulls 1000 watts. I don’t understand watts/volts/amps. I was at Tesla yesterday and they said a lot of people are popping the 12V fuse, using inverters and now I am paranoid. Also my MYLR is 2022 and some other blogs are mentioning that the newer LI battery isn’t working well with some inverters that are use to the acid battery. Is that something I have to worry about? I’m trying to avoid cooking/travel with gas canister.
    2- Since my preferred brand of roof shades are Out of Stock and won’t be shipping until I’m on my trip- is there a CHEAP way to rig something from the ceiling to keep people from looking in my car via the roof? (Cardboard painted black/suction cups?) I haven’t taken delivery yet, but aside from the light issue in the mornings waking me, can tall people see clearly into the car via my glass roof?
    3- Do you have any free charging hacks/secrets for my journey? I have the NEMA 5-15, 14-30 and 14-50. I know at night I might find a safe vacant business with an outdoor 110 plug but that won’t do much except keep me level for maintaining my sleeping climate. I know some green lot stops are free and allow charging.
    4- is it possible to keep sentry mode on (if I’m sleeping in a parking lot, instead of camp mode, and still run climate control - or will it go to sleep while monitoring and turn off my climate settings?). I don’t like the idea that camp mode doesn’t allow sentry mode.
    I got the 5” Travel mattress (from ForMyTesla-Jerry/myRoadster) that I’m gonna fold in half, to fit equipment (no camp box on roof). Got an IceCo Go20 dual zone fridge. I got the one of those pans with the folding handle, a small pot to boil egg or soup. Blanket, minimal clothes, laundry pods, sanitizer, privacy screens for front/back/rear, camp chair, mini collapsing table, my iPad, iwatch, and iPhone.
    Thanks for your channel, remember I’m very new at this! (Tesla and Camping). I just want to visit different friends across the country. Maine, RI, NY, PA, and then on another trip (when it is cooler), to AZ. I’m not into squatting at their homes…

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey NiaG - I'll try to answer as efficiently as I can...
      Sounds like you're all setup at home so that's good. As for the road getting the Anytime Fitness membership will come in clutch for showers. Download the app to easily find the nearest ones.
      1. I would not recommend an inverter. I've seen where Tesla will void the warranty on the car if you do that as well as will cause issues with the 12v and give off errors. The instance I'm linking to is someone trying to use the car to power their house, but the inverter part is still the same so I'd be hesitant to do that on a brand new car. I know there are options for zero interest payments from Amazon or through Affirm if you decide to get a battery like the Jackery or similar.
      You'll need something that can power at least 1000 watts and for instance the Jackery 1500 will do up to 1800 watts. You could probably get by with a Jackery 1000 which is cheaper or an alternate brand.
      Since you wouldn't have solar panels, you'd need to use the car to power it back up. I'd just leave it plugged into the 12v on the car so it's constantly being topped off. The way it works in a Tesla is the main battery is constantly topping off the 12v battery where in a regular gas car the 12v would drain pretty quickly and then you'd have to drive around to power it back up.
      Inverter Voids Warranty: electrek.co/2021/02/23/tesla-voids-your-warranty-power-your-home-with-electric-car-battery-pack/
      2. Doubtful anyone can see in so I wouldn't worry about the roof or you can get a cheap screen on Amazon that will block the sun and offer some privacy. I use the Evannex coverings and since I haver a cargo box don't worry about the panoramic sun roof. Don't know any hacks to cover that one, but wouldn't worry about it unless you plan to stealth camp in a city or parking lot where you're not supposed to.
      3. Sounds like you are on the right track, but make sure you have the correct adapters for campgrounds. The 14-50 is standard, but the 30AMP needs to be a specific RV adapter. Watch my Charging at Campgrounds video and check the description for links: th-cam.com/video/V4V-Ji1bzw0/w-d-xo.html
      For tips: I suggest using the Plugshare app to view non-Tesla charging options. You'll need to use your J1772 adapter (slow) option for these or of course one of the adapters for an RV park or campground. Note: Most RV parks won't let you charge or stay overnight. Only campgrounds will. They might in a pinch if you're super low, but don't count on it. Campgrounds are fine with electrical hookups for cars. Check Campendium app for these. Both apps offer ability in settings to filter out just what you're looking for. If you're planning to camp for free you won't have charging so you'll need to look on Compendium for BLM land options which are more prevalent out west and less on the east coast.
      I wouldn't count on using the 110 plug often. It's only going to provide 2 or 3 miles per hour or like you said, enough to maintain, but it's not as easy to find as you'd think. I'd recommend finding free camping (BLM land) near a Supercharger (within 30-40 minutes). Then occasionally do paid camping with a hookup in more remote areas.
      4. Nope. Can't keep Sentry Mode on while you're in the car. It would set off the alarm, but won't actually turn on anyways. It's only made for when you're leaving the car. Just use Camp Mode and park in secure areas like 24 hour Truck Stops or Walmarts that allow it where there's foot traffic. I usually ask the front desk clerk if it's ok and where they suggest I park. Otherwise just go to public land campgrounds or paid ones. If you're in a city and stealth camping, use shades, limit the amount of times you leave your car and try to do it through the drivers door. Keep doors locked and if you hear something outside you can tap the screen and view the cameras outside. I always leave my drivers seat clear just in case I need to jump in the seat in the middle of the night and take off. Also keep some type of protection with you (bear spray, an axe etc., but check with the local states to make sure whatever you have is legal there).
      Sounds like you've got the right gear as far as bed and fridge as those are both great options and I'm actually doing a review of some of ForMyTeslas products in the next few days. Just make sure to keep Sentry Mode turned on in the settings so your fridge will always stay on if you leave the car or of course turn on Camp Mode when camping. One of those two has to be on for the car to stay awake.
      Hope that helps! Hope you have a blast on your trip and safe travels. 😀

    Bryan, I'm assuming with regard to campgrounds you book an RV site with electric. Have you ever had a problem where the campground gave you a problem because you didn't actually have an RV but an EV?

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question - I've actually never booked at an RV park as most won't allow "car camping." I always suggest just calling ahead to be sure, but any that I've called won't allow it. Most of this was decided well before people were camping in their EV's so things may change going forward. I only camp at regular campgrounds with electric hookups when I need a charge or the rest of the time I actually prefer to camp at dispersed campsites and then head back to town every couple days to charge & get groceries. Never once had any issue with camping at normal campgrounds with electrical posts.

There used to be a hack to gain access to the frunk, but that was closed by Tesla a few years ago so to me that is the most secure place. Anywhere inside where someone can see items is an easy target as they can just break the window and grab things, but the pass coded glove compartment and frunk are the most secure in my opinion. Hope that helps!

    Hi Bryan, Have your ever use the cigarette 12v outlet in middle console or the one in the back trunk to charge your portable refrigerator?

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy - I do almost all the time. In this video I tested it through the Jackery and then the Jackery into the 12v in the rear, but generally I just plug directly into the 12v in either the front or back. I pinned a comment on this video a while back to let people know that I don't suggest using the Jackery as a pass-through as it turns off if it doesn't sense the need for more electricity and the fridge is so efficient that once it reaches its required temp it barely uses any power. I now suggest just using the 12v directly for the fridge.
      Just remember to always keep Sentry Mode on or Camp Mode so the car always stays "awake" and doesn't fall asleep. As long as one of those are turned on you're good to go. I just leave Sentry Mode on all the time for security reasons and then turn on Camp Mode when at a campsite.
      Hope that helps!

      Hi Bart - You can watch my How to Charge a Tesla at a Campground video: th-cam.com/video/V4V-Ji1bzw0/w-d-xo.html
      For the 30AMP 3 prong adapter you have to get that one from a 3rd party. The one I use in that video doesn't seem to be available on Amazon anymore so I've found another adapter that seems to work with it that converts the Tesla 14-50 adapter into the proper 30AMP campground. I'll link to it here: 30 AMP RV/Tesla adapter (One in video isn't available anymore so just plug Tesla 14-50 adapter into this 30AMP adapter): amzn.to/3KtOKH1

      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tran - I do that all the time. Almost every trip in fact and it works great with no issues. The Jackery 1500 that I have is 1.5 kWh while the Tesla has a 75 kWh battery that constantly tops off the 12v. Works flawlessly. When camping out west in sunny conditions, I'll use my 2x100w solar panels, but if it's cloudy or I'm traveling for the day, I just plug the Jackery into the 12v and it powers right up. If you end up purchasing a Jackery, please use this link as it helps support the channel. Jackery 1500: amzn.to/2XZvU84

    How much range do you estimate you lost because of your cargo box? I hear that if you invert the position of the box, so the back side is first, pointed towards the front of the car, it creates much better aerodynamics.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I lose around 20-25%. I've heard that as well, but after contacting every major manufacturer, they've all said not to. I get the idea and it makes sense as that's how planes are built as well as bicycle helmets for Tour de France style racing, but for some reason they all say not to do it and I can't figure out why. I do think it'll look a bit funny, but if it got better range I'd give it a try. Maybe I'll do a test soon. Bjorn Nyland did a test on his channel and he said it did perform better and was quieter. I may be changing to a different setup soon, but if not, it's probably worth doing a test.

      @@bryanhauer Thanks for the reply! Im also curious of using the trailer hit + cargo basket, in order to save that efficiency. I'm assuming the addition of the basket on the rear wouldn't affect aerodynamics at all. Hopefully that's true. Might be a potential solution

      Thanks so much! I have the late April 2021 5 Seater, Tesla Model Y Long Range with black interior and 20" induction wheels. I also opted for the tow package. Don't think I'd change anything. Tesla's are constantly changing literally every month as they don't wait to incorporate new things like regular car makers and I think some of the latest ones have a new lithium-ion 12v battery and double pane glass on the rear windows as well as the front (mine only has front). There might be a couple other ones the latest ones off the assembly line have, but other than those small upgrades that are now standard I wouldn't change much.

I’m thinking of getting a Toyota Highlander hybrid and outfitting it very much the way you did. What vehicle would you get if you’re traveling with two people? Quite a few single people travel in a Toyota Prius, and leave the HVAC on all night. I live and camp in Pacific Northwest. Many forest service roads recommend a minimum of 8 inches of ground clearance which minivans do not have.

      Not sure on other vehicles, but anything with climate control would work best as you don’t have to keep windows open. I’ve only done light off-roading or bumpy dirt roads like my Moab or Zion videos and the Model Y has been for for that, but that’s probably the max for a vehicle like it. I’m looking forward to my Cybertruck 😀

    How much does the roof top carrier affect your range?

    • @bryanhauer

      Hey Mike - On average it's about 25%. While that's a lot, I wouldn't be able to camp like I do and keep the bed in back clear without it. For me it adds an extra stop or two on long travel days, but I'm ok with that. I did look at a rear cargo option, but determined that would block vital Autopilot sensors and cameras. Plus I like the look of the rooftop cargo box. Check out some of my previous long road trips and you'll see where I talk about the range often. Hope that helps! Most things I do (fishing, hiking) are free and charging the car on the road at Superchargers usually only costs around $10-$15. I also do work when on the road, but luckily my job can be done remotely on a computer so as long as I have an internet connection I can work. I also live here in Las Vegas with a friend.
