    I watched this video right after I bought my model 3LR two years ago. It's amazing looking at the supercharging map now vs two years ago. Just imagine in two more years when everyone is using NACS and Tesla and all others have grown 3x or more.

    • @bryanhauer

      Yeah, it’s growing like crazy and looks like others are hopping in too so charging on the road should be pretty easy going forward 👍

    I did this same drive a couple of months ago in my model 3 with the same cargo box from Groton CT to Ft Worth TX and I learned that staying behind bigger cars really helped my range. Also wish the last few stops in Texas had 24hr bathrooms. Hitting those late at night really have no bathroom options.

      For sure 👍🏻 When I get super low I'll usually draft behind a semi truck to make sure I make it to the next charger.

    Even with dogs, we don't need a cargo box although I've got my monster Thule if needed. We stop at pet friendly places on our trips so no camping planned. You have a video of your hitch mounted cargo box which saves some range. I think that's the way I'll go if we do any camping.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m really liking the hitch mounted for the extra range and for how quiet it is compared to roof mounted. Will have a review up in the next week or two. Appreciate you watching my videos 👍

    My wife and I are planning a roundtrip road trip from San Francisco to Seattle, and we're considering sleeping in our car to save money. However, I'm a bit nervous about it. For those who have done this before, where did you stop to sleep overnight? I'd love to follow your recommendations on our trip.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Look for hotel parking lots, truck stops, some Walmarts. You can check apps like Roadtrippers (formerly Campendium) and select the option for ‘Parking’ which will show you overnight parking with reviews from others. I tend to lean towards nicer hotels, occasional casinos, and just check other cars when I get there to make sure they don’t require anything placed on the windshield like a parking pass. They also have large lobbies with 24 hour bathrooms although as a guy I usually just keep a large Gatorade bottle in back of number 1 calls during the night. Walmarts where other camper vans and RV’s are parked is also a great option. Best of luck and let me know if you have any other questions. Oh and make sure to have good window covers that don’t let light leak as they’re a must. I list ones I use in the description of each video.

    Hey Bryan, so good to see you road tripping again even if it’s just to get back to Vegas. Thanks for taking us along for the ride and documenting the good, bad and challenging side of traveling in an EV. You make it look easy, but you’re no longer a rookie. You might have mentioned it in a previous video, but I’m curious how many miles you’ve got on your Y. And if you’ve had to replace your tires yet? You know if you can stick around Austin for a while, you might get some BBQ at the grand opening of Giga Austin! Austin’s not the worst place to hang for week or so. 😀 Either way, I’m excited to watch the next leg of your trip!

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! Thanks 😀 That was a long trip. I'm beat. I was able to get some decent BBQ in and did drive over to Giga Austin. It's huge! Sounds like they'll be having the grand opening festival around the first week of April. I may go, but we'll see what other trips pop up from now until then. Thanks for tuning in and lots of new adventures coming soon.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Realized I didn't respond to your question about mileage and tires... I've got just under 25,000 miles on the car which I had delivered on April 30th of 2021. The Tesla tech checked my tired tread when he did the tire rotation in Mid December and said I was still good. I think I should probably get new tires in the next few months though. I'm pretty rough on them with the dirt roads and rocks in many camping areas and of course all the highway miles.

    • @bluedog9935
      @bluedog9935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bryanhauer Yeah, I was just curious. We’ve had ours for about 7 months with less than 8,000 miles, but we’ve only been on a couple of real road trips. 25,000 miles on the original set is acceptable and probably pretty typical of a Model YLR. I’ve heard that the performance model eats up tires, but I’m guessing that the operator has something to do with that.😀 I am a little paranoid about getting a flat when I’m traveling and I’m looking into getting one of those modern spares, but they take up quite a bit of space in the back. I know, sounds like a first world problem…😏

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bluedog9935 I picked up one of the official Tesla air compressors when they were still selling them along with a sealant flat kit and that seemed to work well the one time I had an issue. I was able to make it to a nearby tire center and the guy plugged the hole for me and no issues since.
      I wouldn't worry too much. Tesla offers roadside assistance up to 50 miles and AAA does up to 200. I'd just make sure you have some pucks in case the tow driver doesn't and then you can make sure the battery pack is safe when it's jacked up.

    We have a very similar M Y with a rear swing away cargo box. We have only taken one week road trip and some shorter trips, all here in the southeast. So far the rear box seems to have less drag than the 15 to. 25 % that you mentioned. When we take a longer trip out west next fall I will let you know but it appears it has less drag than the top box. We’ll see.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the one I originally was going to get, but I opted not to because I was afraid to block important Autopilot sensors and cameras. How has that impacted it if any? Thanks:

    • @senordockman1138
      @senordockman1138 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bryanhauer it does impact the sensors. However auto pilot and FSD worked just fine on trips. However, backing up can be a problem if you are used to having that rear camera. Originally, we thought auto pilot would not work. But you can go into the screen and and adjust the settings so that FSD does work with the rear cargo carrier. We got the swing away so we can access our rear hatch. Really enjoy your videos.

      Ok cool. That’s good to know. I was looking at the Stowaway 2 I believe. It swings out. I’ll have to reconsider now. I like the look of the rooftop cargo box and the length for skis, but the range loss does annoy me at times like today as I’m doing over 1000 miles.

    I’ve not yet tried a truck stop for camping as I thought it would be too loud and/or sketchy but this one looked completely good. I do like knowing there are other “campers” around me while I’m boondocking. Have you ever camped at a rest stop (a non-sketchy one)? Some are nice and large and I see plenty of cars/vans/campers, so some of them have to be sleeping. I’ve never done it but may consider it this Summer.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Ken - Yep this one was great! I've had no issues parking overnight at the large truck stops (Petro, Flying J etc). I usually ask an employee if it's ok and where they prefer I park, but so far they've all been cool with it and sometimes direct me to a specific part of the property where they want people sleeping. I usually don't do rest stops at night. I would during the day for a nap, but I just don't trust them at night. No business open and not enough foot traffic to feel safe. I'd do it in a pinch, but wouldn't do it often. I usually only do this on long travel days when a hotel seems pointless for 6-7 hours. Easier/cheaper to just sleep and then take off first thing in the morning. Hope that helps 😀

    Bryan, did you retire or something? Or do you just have unlimited PTO lol

      Haha! I wish 😀 I work full-time but am able to do it remotely so it works for this style of living. Hopefully over time the channel can grow enough where I can do less client work. So far works great though since I have a flexible schedule.

    With the larger S average of 290 wh/mile, I expected you to have a lower with wh/mile even with the roof storage. Wonder if that’s more driving style or if the roof rack greatly increasing the average and also what is your overall average?

    Do you put your car in camp mode when you go to sleep?

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. Camp Mode is basically Climate Control. You can set the temp and it just stays there as long as you want as long as you're above 20% battery. It burns on avg around 1% per hour battery. I've left it on for days while camping in hot and cold weather. If you have an electric fridge you need to make sure either Sentry Mode or Camp Mode is on as that keeps the car awake and provides constant power to the 12v outlets.

      @@bryanhauer yeah, I do the same. The only thing I don't like is the fan can't be on auto and runs all the time. I either put it to lowest speed or turn it off completely. The noise bothers me when I am trying to go to sleep. When it goes too fast I hear and feel the chasis vibrating and wakes me up. The fan starts rumbling too. I'll turn off camp mode and climate control completely before I go to sleep. It's 39 degrees outside but the car is already heated and have a nice and warm sleeping bag so I'm good. I'm testing couple of mattresses and about to go sleep in the car parked in our driveway. Got the MYP little over two months ago and just bought my car camping gear. So far so good and I like it. I'm ready to go places.
