Thanks for bringing that up. I was lurking on the stream and felt uncomfortable with those comments. It’s entirely appropriate for someone to share the food they’ve grown up with and tweak it to fit their own lifestyle. The food looked really good too!

Honestly it was actually a fantastic change of pace to see you speak far more seriously about such problematic issues. I love your normal content and your comedic style, but its nice to see how passionate and serious you are about this.
That first video is soooo fake who the hell are they trying to fool? Like of course it’s gonna scripted but jeez they sound like those “We’re all in this together during these hard times 😔” commercials.
Giving the new recruits the responsibility of “addressing the issues” that caused the uprising months back before they were even there is so inappropriate. The fact that they are also all POC does not make me feel better about the serious problems in Conde Nast. It would have been better if the remaining original members could speak on what happened/how things will improve/why they stayed. Wish all the best to the newest members but this just makes me feel like they totally missed the point.
Couldn't agree more. Those new recruits shouldn't have to be in that position because ultimately they had nothing to do with the controversy; it should be the people that were there during the controversy. And meanwhile Chris gets to just talk about meatballs as if everything is fine.

Agree so hard. This was handled so poorly; no matter how much I like the new chefs and editors I still feel cringey for watching. They really did the new EIC a disservice by not addressing their racism in a video prior to introducing the new staff

I really love the mental imagery of Chris happily making meatballs with a dead body just barely out of frame. But he's on the verge of panic because he knows everyone knows its there but he can't say anything so he just has to keep smiling.

One of the things that I think BA failed to grasp with this tasteless rebranding is that we were never fans of the company, we were fans of the people. Tokenism, as seen in the "Why We Joined BA" video, is based on the principle that the POC we know and love are replaceable; interchangeable; no more valuable than the diversity they brought to the cast. Not only is this tone deaf and disrespectful, it's downright arrogant: to think that we value BA/Condé Nast more than the people that made them successful is going to be their greatest downfall. The viewers will go where the creators go.
Its so gross that the first thing I said when I saw the thumbnail for the "Why we joined Bon Appetit" was "wow they got a knock-off Priya" (no offense to her but it seemed pretty obvious that BA just thought "throw in another Indian-American lady they'll never know!) I'm also pretty disappointed to see Marcus Samuelson involved in all this. He's probably exempt from the pay issue seeing as he's a pretty big name, but its disappointing nonetheless for me to see a chef I respect join BA after everything that happened.

I used to watch Bon Appetit all the time before the scandal happened. What really makes me upset is that they keep saying that "things happened" and "how we're moving forward" without taking the time to truly address it. It's like they keep pushing it under the rug and hope the audience forgets. It's honestly insulting.
another problem BA had was that they would only let poc exhibit the food their culture was associated with. even when they got to do a rare or unique dish they never got to cook food they actually cooked. christina only got to do asian food, all asia, and pria and sohla only got to do south asian (edit:related S asian food), andy only got to do middle eastern. so that's still the thing.
Like, imagine being an uber-talented professional chef, with additional training in marketing, and only being allowed to make foods you learned as a kid - or that people assume you did. Not only were they underpaying POC staff, they also limited their career reach by choosing marketable "authenticity" over letting the chefs flex their hard-earned skills.
Binging With Babish is now Babish Culinary Universe and he plans on adding more shows, Sohla is currently there and i’m so excited for the growth on that channel!

Worst think is I know they'll bounce back, if only because they are on youtube. They'll start making content again, the algorithm will start pushing it and it'll attract new people who don't know anything about what happened. In a way, never addressing the issue is a genius move on them. Unless you are aware of what happen, you'll never be reminded by them, there won't be proof on their channel and if someone look back in the future, there will only be a small hole of a couple of months in their publication history, hole that could easily be misinterpreted as a result of covid.
Also waiting four months gives people who are livid about the issue time to let that rage settle to a simmer and find other things to occupy their time with, rather than directing their anger the channel they loved that betrayed them by being awful people. The break was a hit to revenues, but to start again immediately would guarantee constant hate comments and huge dislike bars on every video that would ensure many newer viewers would be fully aware of what occurred. Be quiet about the issue and disappear for awhile, and the angry folks are less likely to be there to educate their new audience about the implosion even having happened.

Not gonna lie I got pushed Chris’s video and I totally didn’t realize Bon Apetit starting posting again. I thought he joined Babish. So my bad. But definitely seeing their videos pop up
The first video is one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever seen. The effortless scrappy charm of test kitchen is gone forever after we realize how the sausage is made. Now they are trying extremely hard to recreate that feeling which inevitably come off as forced and disingeneous. It's not gonna get better with time. Even Chris emits the energy of a serial killer now.
I really like what you brought up about companies dude. They literally exist to make money. Am I shocked that they paid people unequally? Not really, it's a very systematic issue. A lot of people who'd accept lower pay probably need money more than others so they just accept what they can. Recently when it was found out that companies like Nike were using prison labors and probably also child labors I wasn't even shocked lol. It's to be expected honestly. That's why we as a society NEED to check these companies and that pure capitalism will just prey on people in the lowest classes.
The fact that companies are now really pushing parasocial relationships for their consumers is what’s really scary nowadays tho... this was more shocking because they manipulated BA as a content channel that felt emotionally close and authentic to its viewers just like any other creator on TH-cam. It hurts more when your brain makes a relationship to these people... I honestly think we need more rules or socially responsible designers for these styles of marketing. When it’s something like Nike or Primark it’s so much easier to deal with because we can separate them as for profit companies... but now with these new types of corporations It’s really messing with the audiences’ head when they pretend to be something or someone they’re not...

This reminds me of when Martha Stewart got in trouble for insider trading in the early aughts and she was trying to just do one of her cooking segments on the Today show. The anchors were trying to ask her questions about the crime and she's just saying she just wants to focus on her salad.

If someone did that to me, it would already feel like they only brought me to shame me in front of the public, regardless if I learned from my mistakes or not. Yes! I refused to watch them when they came out knowing people would post reactions soon. I suspected they wouldn't actually discuss the systemic problem or take steps to better themselves and that seems to be the case. The CEO and heads should be the ones making a video statement. No food. No entertainment distraction. Just sit down and speak up about it. Say what you're doing to change. The fact that they're not doing that makes me suspect they're not working all that hard to change things. This is just preformative inclusion. Doesn't show if minorities are being treated equally at all. Doesn't address anything.

have no idea why but the way Chrissy is on camera reminds me very much of Claire and I find it impossible that that this isn't intentional. There's something about her affect. I wonder if that's how she just, is which is fine and valid but did they set out to find somebody with a similar way of being on camera? Are they directing her? Did they intentionally hire somebody with a similar way of being? It's super weird. This is of course not a knock against her personally.
I'm pretty sure the test kitchen was/is cast in order to have certain types of personalities or like characters interact. It's done a lot everywhere really, the most known example of this sort of crafted team of characters is like boy bands especially now in kpop everyone has a role in the team and you choose your favorites or whatever and hope for a crossover of two people 'cus you feel like their quirky personality trait would work well together. It is extremely obvious in BA and it was well done but now we can see they're just trying to recreate the same thing with anyone and it has an obvious bitter aftertaste.

I actually quite liked Chrissy’s video. While Chris Morocco’s was garbage. Honestly I think they should have just started with a completely new crew - anything with the old crew is going to have a bitter taste.

You can never truly understand a person's motives behind anything especially not a public figure. We know that Chris was one of the people behind the scandal, but we have no idea if Brad is doing it for the money or if he supports those actions in secret.
That's really disappointing to find out that Chris was part of the problem, but I did wonder why he chose to stay with the BA channel after all the shit went down...
Of course, most of my ire is directed towards the corporate shills however, my opinion of Chris is currently in limbo leaning towards the negative. He denied Sohla's statement(on not liking how fast she moved up) but I am inclined to believe her especially since he didn't release a statement supporting his BIPOC colleagues. Compare this with Delaney who said some controversial things. They were quite offensive and sounded quite piercing however he has released what looks like a very sincere apology. He addresses the issue and knows his position of privilege. Hopefully it's not just words of course but I really like his apology. Plus, I believe people are capable of moral growth and he did say those things years ago when he was younger. Teenagers/college kids say stupid things. I like that he grew as a person and it's way better than people who stay silent or are on the fence like Chris.
Sohla also has a show with food52’s channel which seems kinda like an interactive series of challenging viewers to riff on the recipes she does! Her first video was VERY fun to watch!

Giving the new recruits the responsibility of “addressing the issues” that caused the uprising months back before they were even there is so inappropriate. The fact that they are also all POC does not make me feel better about the serious problems in Conde Nast. It would have been better if the remaining original members could speak on what happened/how things will improve/why they stayed. Wish all the best to the newest members but this just makes me feel like they totally missed the point.
Couldn't agree more. Those new recruits shouldn't have to be in that position because ultimately they had nothing to do with the controversy; it should be the people that were there during the controversy. And meanwhile Chris gets to just talk about meatballs as if everything is fine.

One of the things that I think BA failed to grasp with this tasteless rebranding is that we were never fans of the company, we were fans of the people. Tokenism, as seen in the "Why We Joined BA" video, is based on the principle that the POC we know and love are replaceable; interchangeable; no more valuable than the diversity they brought to the cast. Not only is this tone deaf and disrespectful, it's downright arrogant: to think that we value BA/Condé Nast more than the people that made them successful is going to be their greatest downfall.

Worst think is I know they'll bounce back, if only because they are on youtube. They'll start making content again, the algorithm will start pushing it and it'll attract new people who don't know anything about what happened. In a way, never addressing the issue is a genius move on them. Unless you are aware of what happen, you'll never be reminded by them, there won't be proof on their channel and if someone look back in the future, there will only be a small hole of a couple of months in their publication history, hole that could easily be misinterpreted as a result of covid.
Also waiting four months gives people who are livid about the issue time to let that rage settle to a simmer and find other things to occupy their time with, rather than directing their anger the channel they loved that betrayed them by being awful people. The break was a hit to revenues, but to start again immediately would guarantee constant hate comments and huge dislike bars on every video that would ensure many newer viewers would be fully aware of what occurred. Be quiet about the issue and disappear for awhile, and the angry folks are less likely to be there to educate their new audience about the implosion even having happened.

The first video is one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever seen. The effortless scrappy charm of test kitchen is gone forever after we realize how the sausage is made. Now they are trying extremely hard to recreate that feeling which inevitably come off as forced and disingeneous. It's not gonna get better with time. Even Chris emits the energy of a serial killer now.

I really like what you brought up about companies dude. They literally exist to make money. Am I shocked that they paid people unequally? Not really, it's a very systematic issue. A lot of people who'd accept lower pay probably need money more than others so they just accept what they can. Recently when it was found out that companies like Nike were using prison labors and probably also child labors I wasn't even shocked lol. It's to be expected honestly. That's why we as a society NEED to check these companies and that pure capitalism will just prey on people in the lowest classes.

He has a family to support, his words were very sincere and this guy has to support his family. He can’t just leave BA because then he wouldnt be making any money to support his kids and wife, not sure if she works or not. (If she does, cool (: ). I used to think that Chris was snooty but after watching a lot of his videos he seems to actually be a good guy. His words about the situation don’t show that he doesn’t care, he does care. If he didn’t care he would have just left snd not said anything about it.

Yes! I refused to watch them when they came out knowing people would post reactions soon. I suspected they wouldn't actually discuss the systemic problem or take steps to better themselves and that seems to be the case. The CEO and heads should be the ones making a video statement. No food. No entertainment distraction. Just sit down and speak up about it. Say what you're doing to change. The fact that they're not doing that makes me suspect they're not working all that hard to change things. This is just preformative inclusion. Doesn't show if minorities are being treated equally at all. Doesn't address anything.

because they couldn’t big brain the fact that their scripted infomercial didn’t HAVE to have any production quality. it would have been so easy to actually have them zoom call, but they just had to use 3 different set pieces and multiple camera angles. i honestly don’t think there was ever actually a call. it all comes off as so disingenuous, like jeffery star apologizing in the foyer of his mansion on his expensive couch in his custom silk bath robe.🤷♀️”look at how good this video looks” vibe instead of getting nitty and gritty and making your point, you know? bc the point was to just look good. out of sight out of mind.

They also never addressed the audience in the video too (ie looking at the camera, always looking at their laptops). So it just made it feel more disconnected and out of touch.

have no idea why but the way Chrissy is on camera reminds me very much of Claire and I find it impossible that that this isn't intentional. There's something about her affect. I wonder if that's how she just, is which is fine and valid but did they set out to find somebody with a similar way of being on camera? Are they directing her? Did they intentionally hire somebody with a similar way of being? It's super weird. This is of course not a knock against her personally.

I'm pretty sure the test kitchen was/is cast in order to have certain types of personalities or like characters interact. It's done a lot everywhere really, the most known example of this sort of crafted team of characters is like boy bands especially now in kpop everyone has a role in the team and you choose your favorites or whatever and hope for a crossover of two people 'cus you feel like their quirky personality trait would work well together. It is extremely obvious in BA and it was well done but now we can see they're just trying to recreate the same thing with anyone and it has an obvious bitter aftertaste.
@@assiacbn9472 Yeah, it is hard to tell how intentional it was when they first started doing TH-cam videos but since this is what they came back with after most of the crew walked off, it's obvious in a really uncomfortable way that they were trying to manufacture that same dynamic as before.

i also am, very much so, but brad (im :/ abt chris) may have a contract to stay at BA & other reasons not to quit. both of them do have a wife and two kids in new york city while i dont think i remember any of the other chefs being parents (correct me if im wrong tho). going out to find a job specifically in a pandemic when you have a family to care for in nyc would be hard. im also upset brad didnt leave but i think i can see his reasons

You can never truly understand a person's motives behind anything especially not a public figure. We know that Chris was one of the people behind the scandal, but we have no idea if Brad is doing it for the money or if he supports those actions in secret.

Of course, most of my ire is directed towards the corporate shills however, my opinion of Chris is currently in limbo leaning towards the negative. He denied Sohla's statement(on not liking how fast she moved up) but I am inclined to believe her especially since he didn't release a statement supporting his BIPOC colleagues.
Compare this with Delaney who said some controversial things. They were quite offensive and sounded quite piercing however he has released what looks like a very sincere apology. He addresses the issue and knows his position of privilege. Hopefully it's not just words of course but I really like his apology. Plus, I believe people are capable of moral growth and he did say those things years ago when he was younger. Teenagers/college kids say stupid things. I like that he grew as a person and it's way better than people who stay silent or are on the fence like Chris.
