- How to smash an audition / Musician audition tips / How to audition for a band!
Smashing an audition is about preparation and about reverse engineering the situation. What does the person auditioning you want to see and what are you doing to help them make the decision that you are the best option. This isn't about you being the best option.. This is about you being so obviously the best option that they might as well stop the rest of the auditions because they are convinced that you are the right musician!
So how do you do this?
firstly I am shocked with how many hundreds and hundreds of musicians I have done where muso's haven't learned the songs properly.. Sounds ridiculous but there is a habit to do just enough which isn't a winning mentality.
Second why learn the 3 songs they have given you when you can take it upon yourself to find out 10 other songs the band plays (covers or originals) and learn them all... shock the band by how much you want this!
Don't be boring - It's important to remember that you need to stick out so wearing all black or even looking scruffy is not good enough!
Lastly tell the person doing the audition how much you want this opportunity... It flatters them and makes feel like you will work harder and appreciate it more than anyone else.
These tiny details are so infrequent and while they sound obvious, I would say this happens on 1% of auditions... CRAZY!

If you have literally weeks or months to prepare "all" of the band's material, great. But if you just have a week, or the band asks you if you wanna jam next week, that is completely unreasonable. I try to take a few songs + any new ideas the members want to send me to study. I am able to better focus and better come prepared. But I can see why learning as much as possible would make it easier to just jam on anything.
Righteousness tip.🙌🏽 Confidence =Competence. Key point, know what the band is looking for & be overly prepared. I’m putting myself out there so I WANT to get it right! THANK YOU!!!!😁

Mike Keneally, Frank Zappa's genius guitarist in his fearsomely talented band of musos, did this. When he phoned him he told Frank, "I know all your songs". Frank asked him if he knew how many albums that was (about 60). "Yeah" said Keneally, I have them all in the other room". "I don't believe you!" frank replied, "get your ass down here and prove it to me!". So Mike did, played the 2 audition songs he had been asked and then Frank just started naming songs from his entire back catalogue. Keneally knew them. He got the gig, one of the toughest and most prestigious in jazz-rock.
That is amazing! How much work must have gone into that audition, but then again he wanted the gig that bad and what a career move. Amazing!!

Thank you so much I’ve been preparing for an audition for weeks for a songwriting diploma at BIMM i was really nervous eat what to expect or what to do and how it was going to go, I had already prepared way more than they asked but I still wasn’t confident, watching this was reassured and helpful thank you so much I’m so excited XD

Update: they said I could "easily walk right in the degree course" I'm 16 I was auditioning for the diploma, had the most successful audition I could imagine so thank you so much for all your help!!@@DamianKeyes
I came in knowing MORE than the guitarist. Drummers, wife’s, best friend’s brother got the gig after not working with only three songs.
It's amazing how little music is in these "music auditions"...
