Id put it like this Requirements to be goat all must be met. Physical strength- Brian and Big z equal. Amount of meaningful accomplishments- Big Z Impact on sport overall- Brian As of right now there is not a GOAT
It really depends at what comp you're looking at. Arnold Strongman Classic, Big Z has beaten Brian 8 to 3, but in WSM it's Brian who beats Z with 5-4. (only counting the years they both competed in the finals) . Big Z is the GOAT though. WSM and IFSA split and the statically strongest athletes went to IFSA which Z has won twice + 4x WSM makes him a 6x World Strongest Man in my personal opinion (+ 8x ASC)
uhmmm, big z only leads 4-3 in h2h in wsm, and brian lost in a dumb way in wsm 2010. brian actually more events in wsm 2010 than z, but since z got more medals in wsm 2010. but they gave z the win. Very dumb. they should have made a final event to crown the winner.
Honestly two of the greatest to ever do it. I'd give the edge to Z just because of the 8 Arnold wins and all the world records. He also got a lot of silvers against 5 time WSM winner Mariusz Pudzianowski. Even so, the fact that Brian got all four of his wins while Big Z was competing is a feat in and of itself. Nothing but love and respect for these two men.
The best and most iconic rivalry of the sport of strongman its really hard to decide when comparing events the way you did on who is the better all rounded athlete but personally I'd still say Zydrunas is the absolute GOAT knowing how long dominant and achieving he is
BEST two to ever do it! Great rivalry and amazing competitors. Only 1 bone to pick, where’s stones? The stones decided many of their competitions over the years and were a great factor in their competitiveness
Great comparison. Was also great to meet both of these athletes at the 2 Arnold's I've attended and the Shaw classic this year. Both great athletes. I think Overall they are 100% the 2 strongest of all time. Big Z probably the advantage over though. I would say personally meeting both Brian is the better character. Thank you for choosing some of my clips and the shoutouts!
For some, they are the two greatest strongmen of all time, so not surprising it’s close. I’ve always had Z as statically stronger, but that video has shown that Brian might have had the edge at times when it came to deadlift. 👍🏻
Big Z was THE GOLD STANDARD for most strongmen to achieve and maybe surpass dude is recognized in the strongman community as the best to ever do it with Brian right behind him. Love em both and they still competing to this day too which is fckin insane
Big Z should’ve claimed his 5th in 2015 if it wasn’t for that fumble on the 3rd stone. Look at him now, dominating at 46, just winning the strongman games even he can claim a 5th! He’s been dominating when Shaw was in his basketball days. and due to his longevity in the sport I’d have to call Z the GOAT. No questions asked. Both are impressive strongmen! I’d be delighted to see both Brain and Zydrunas claim 5 WSM titles
I’d almost consider saying that Z has 7, but that’d be unfair. When IFSA and WSM split in 2005, 9 of the 10 finalists from 2004 competed in IFSA and not WSM, the only man not being Pudzianowski. He won 2 of the IFSA Strongman Finals which at the time, held stricter competition than WSM. Watching Poundstone fall down quickly after his podium finish in 2008 and place much lower in 2009-12, when the IFSA athletes returned showed me all that I need to see. Ofc it’s a different competition, but really have to give credit to Z in the mid 2000s. Prolly would’ve given Pud a run for his money because he started coming into his prine
4x WSM, 8x Arnold’s, 2x IFSA, I believe 5/6 2nd place finishes in WSM finals against arguably the other 2 best to ever compete. He’s the best in my book any day of the week, and I’m a huge Shaw fan. Sorry for the rant, really just became a strongman nerd over the past few months
@@StrengthUniverse Mateusz vs Martins coming next? What do you think about the advantage Big z and Eddie have in the static events over Hapthor and Brian in terms of range of motion? That might explain the difference
Brian moves the weights over a longer distance given his height. Technically he’s stronger based on that alone. On the other hand he is usually about 10% heavier than big Z so strength vs weight ratio is higher for Big Z but with shorter stature he genetically has a mechanical advantage over Shaw. So arguably Shaw is producing more muscular force output while Big Zs mechanical advantage requires less actual muscle output.
Brian actually ran out of time during the squat lift at 2017 WSM... how boss is that?! Didn't use momentum off the pads either, just plodded along. Still, 15 > 13...
It makes you wonder if he had more in the tank although don't forget that Brian 13 reps was with 700lbs Vs BigZ's 15 reps with 725lbs. Brian only managed 10 reps with the same 725lbs weight in 2014
@RollRite I agree you can get a bit of bounce without pads although to get any effective advantage you need to hit both sides at an identical time or it throws you off balance.
@@CaptainWowThe2nd Only in the video shown there were no pads during Big Z's squat. Try it at the gym, no pad is harder in my opinion because of the abrupt stop when the weight touches them.
Two of the greats. It's hard to make a list like this, numbers is one thing but on the other hand when it comes to competition in most cases you do what you need to do and nothing extra to save to the next event.
@@pearsonriggs846 Wtf are you talking about? Big Z destroyed Pudz at Arnolds several times. Z couldnt beat Pudz so Brian, who never faced Pudz, is better? :S
I’d argue it’s harder for new athletes to achieve records, because 100 years ago an 800 lbs deadlift would earn you a world record now you would need to lift over half a ton to even compete with the world record the competition is just vastly better today then 100 years ago there for the athletes and achievements of today are much more impressive.
It's all about lever length as Archimedes says. If Brian had shorter arms and legs, he would have achieved the same pressing and squatting results as Z...not taking anything away from Z.
A brave video and very fair comparisons, for me it is Big Z, down to progression through and longevity in the sport. However Brian although second in my opinion is only there because Strongman never finishes on a draw. Once again great video and thank you.
Brian is more of an absolute athlete, Big X is more a static beast in my opinion. Both are equally great but statistically Z has Brian beat for now. If brain can stop getting injured I’m sure he can change that.
@@StrengthUniverse agreed, I believe his body is finally fighting him for the years of abuse he’s put it through but it would be really cool if he could secure one last and finale WSM victory, we’ll see though ay🤷♂️
They both have done so much for the sport, but i think Big Z is more comsistent with less injuries and more adaptability. I hope shaw gets a 5th title and Savickas shares the podium before they hang it up. Both my favorite.
Loved the video. For me the audio was messed up, progressively getting more out of sync until the end where you were still talking to a black screen for about 1 min 10 sec.
I always wonder if brian could’ve benefited if he started lifting at a younger age. Big z has almost a decade of training ahead of brian if they were the same age
I like Brian a lot, but Big Z is a true monster. My curiosity is what Kane (Glenn Jacobs) could of done if he went in that direction. He was insanely strong before the shoulder injuries
in my opinion, brians strength and lifts that he can perform despite his height make him a better strongman. zydrunas is like half a foot shorter and a similar weight
Big Z is wearing raps for the squat. Shaw doesn't appear to be, unless it's under his sleeves. I'm not sure how much that would effect it, but it is a factor.
Brian shaw was pause repping his squats... Bigz was using bounce. Strength-wise the pause shows more strength. But for a competition where it is also about time, Bigz handled it better.
This one is incredibly hard for me to judge. As we all found out before this year's WSM, the organization picks 'favorites' and places their favorites in groups that suit them best. I'd be willing to bet that both Brian and Z were placed in favorable categories at least once, but I wonder which was placed more favorably over the years. My gut tells me it was probably Brian, afterall, if the name of the game is making money then an American super-athlete who is legitimately World-Class strong winning is the best case scenario for the organization. I think Z was an incredible athlete even beyond his 'prime' years, and what he was able to do with his smaller than average (for a strongman) frame was insane. Personally as an American I still have to give it to Big Z.
It makes me wonder, did they push each other to the greatness they achieved? Or if 1 hadn't been there would the other have absolutely annihilated the competition for 6-8 years? Definitely a debate I've had with myself! In the end they are 2 of the greatest, if not THE 2 GREATEST strongman of all time.
@@StrengthUniverse That's true... Statically Zydrunus is stronger than Brian but Functionally, both are identical as per your demo... Very very close indeed.
@@bigfredbennett971 Thanks Fred, I am hoping I have resolved by getting YT to remove the section that they claimed but having just checked on the video it seems that they have messed up the audio
I don't know anything other than what I see on TH-cam. I do not know these men personally. But from what I've watched Big Z seems to be single. Brian had some relationships and is now married. I don't care what anyone says but if your married or have children there is no way you can devote as much of yourself to training as a single man can. I think that is why Big Z had such a long career. Utmost respect for both men.
I’d say Brian has a strength advantage, because in addition to the events in this video, he is also better at atlas stones, arm-over-arm events, and throwing, whereas Žydrūnas’s only event that’s missing is the bench press. That being said, Žydrūnas is the better strongman. Both guys have similar competition records in international pro competitions, except for the Arnold. There, it’s 8-3 in favor of Žydrūnas, so he wins in that regard.

@@pearsonriggs846 wsm was crossfit back then, big z at arnolds was doing reps with more weight than pudzianowski was able to move...
They’re both great, but BigZ is the goat, and that’s all anyone can say about that. Thanks for another great video.
Couldn't agree more!
I sometimes wonder if either Brian or Big Z would have won 6 or more wsm titles if the other had never existed.
This is going to be real close imo
Certainly is
Wow tied on events. Big Z comes out on competitions of course, no surprise there..
great video
Thank you
I’d argue it’s harder for new athletes to achieve records, because 100 years ago an 800 lbs deadlift would earn you a world record now you would need to lift over half a ton to even compete with the world record the competition is just vastly better today then 100 years ago there for the athletes and achievements of today are much more impressive.
Thanks Sam.
Brian is more of an absolute athlete, Big X is more a static beast in my opinion. Both are equally great but statistically Z has Brian beat for now. If brain can stop getting injured I’m sure he can change that.
I would love to see Brian another WSM title but I honestly believe that peaked 3 or 4 years ago and has been on a decline since.
Good topic. Big Loz did this a couple of weeks ago.
I'll check it out
Loved the video. For me the audio was messed up, progressively getting more out of sync until the end where you were still talking to a black screen for about 1 min 10 sec.
Hi Jeff, It's not just you. TH-cam have messed it up. I contacted them about it several hours ago but they said I will have to wait 48hours. Sorry
Z is the king.
Always
I don't think I've seen anyone squatting 329kg for 15 reps with that ease, he had 4-5 reps left in hime for sure
They are both legendary. In his prime no one can compare to big z overhead lift.
dude pressing a 300lb dumbbell with one hand is unfathomable, and he did it 3 times
Honestly both are great
would hate to break into either of these 2 house's
I like Žydrunas more but Brian is amazing strongman
I think BigZ is the greatest of all time but Brian maybe a close 2nd
Brian always looks like he’s wearing baby sunglasses stretched over his giant melon
😂
Was any one else yelling YEAH BUDDY before every lift?
Big Z had the strongest shoulders in history.
Brian is the second greatest strongman in history and one of the best dudes on the planet.
If you included speed on atlas stones then that would give Brian the win.
The two greatest of all time. Big Z edges it for me. He just makes difficult lifts look so easy when he is on form.
Big Z had less down time and won over half the competition. Shaw pampered himself with less competing only winning 45 percent of the competition.
These two were so far ahead of their competition it's ridiculous.
Two men who made an entire four or 5 year era in the sport of strongman
(I consider it 2010-2014 although many consider it 2009-2015
Let’s call it a draw and just marvel at how lucky we are to have watched these legends compete over the decades.
Farmers/frame and stones?
Think Brian takes it you know
Big Z is the GOAT
But Brian definitely had the best peak of any strongman ever
in my opinion, brians strength and lifts that he can perform despite his height make him a better strongman. zydrunas is like half a foot shorter and a similar weight
Big Z is wearing raps for the squat. Shaw doesn't appear to be, unless it's under his sleeves. I'm not sure how much that would effect it, but it is a factor.
This is the big one guys
Big Z...all the way Big Z!
Can u do a video on Nathaniel Massiah vs somone if u can find enough information
Thank you, I've made a note and will look into it
@@StrengthUniverse thanks don't know how much youll be able to find outside squat, bench and deadlift tho
The squat lift being timed on browns end was wild he could have done quite a few more if needed
Brian shaw was pause repping his squats... Bigz was using bounce. Strength-wise the pause shows more strength. But for a competition where it is also about time, Bigz handled it better.
Im a pretty big guy, 1m88 for 110kg, but i cannot fathom what it must be to be such a monster, 2,03m for 200kg... thats space marines shit.
Brian is at such a disadvantage because he's 5 inches taller then big z.
The two greatest
THIS is a good comparison. some of the other ones not so much
2 GOATS here.. But the crown is for Big Z!!!! When it comes to lift the weight this guy is a fckn MONSTER!!!
It makes me wonder, did they push each other to the greatness they achieved? Or if 1 hadn't been there would the other have absolutely annihilated the competition for 6-8 years? Definitely a debate I've had with myself! In the end they are 2 of the greatest, if not THE 2 GREATEST strongman of all time.
on that hummer deadlift Brian killed it... than Big Z beats it by around 30 lbs...that's insane
Zydrunus!
Hi Mate, maybe a bit closer then it first seems
@@StrengthUniverse 🙂
Deadlift, Squat, Bench and Log:
Zydrunus: 453, 452, 286, 228 = 1,419
Brian: 468, 410, 247, 211 = 1,336
For Americans:
Zydrunus: 999, 996, 631, 503 = 3,129
Brian: 1031, 904, 545, 465 = 2,945
@@StrengthUniverse That's true... Statically Zydrunus is stronger than Brian but Functionally, both are identical as per your demo... Very very close indeed.
Everyone knows Big Z is the goat. Brian is the only one who could touch him in his prime though.
Would love to see a battle of the goats Z vs Kaz
I would love to make that video but I have having enough issues with this getting getting Copyright claimed
@@StrengthUniverse that sucks man, you put out such top notch content keep it up 💪🏽
@@bigfredbennett971 Thanks Fred, I am hoping I have resolved by getting YT to remove the section that they claimed but having just checked on the video it seems that they have messed up the audio
Do Strength Universe vs Lifting Vault
I'm not sure how that would work LOL
Somewhere I read that Big Z has over 250 trophies or was i close to 300 in his home. Nobody comes even close
Godzilla vs King Kong basically
