Great lesson, Liz. I'm a "newish" fiddler, and have been focused on learning melodies. Basics on backup really expand my musicianship. You've given a lot of options. I go to old time jams and multiple fiddles are all playing the melody. With some practice, I'll be happy to break off and enhance the rhythm. Thanks!
Long tones are much underrated. Gives a nice bagpipe drone effect. AND stays out of the way of the melody. Also leaves you the option to build the comping options up slowly. Great lesson.
Very timely lesson for me, I just started "jamming" (I'm using that term loosely) with a group and needed to figure out what I was doing. I realized a couple of things: 1) On the violin it's easy to find the 5 note, it's just one string up because we're tuned in 5ths. The 4th is one note down from the 5. 2) The violin illustrates the circle of 5ths very nicely. String 1 (G) has one sharp (#), string 2 (D) has two sharps (##), string 3 (A) has three sharps (###) and string 4 (E) has 4 sharps.... 90% of the music we play is in G, D or A. We don't have a C string which would be below G so that's string 0 no sharps. Just some tricks for my old brain to remember... Many people coming from traditional orchestral music don't seem to understand chord structure. We're used to reading notes on a page and playing them back. I have a bit of chord experience from guitar, but bringing it to violin is a new thing for me too. I also just realized that I've been following Liz for one year and learned so much. Thank You Liz for your wonderful music and lessons!
Thanks. From a background of New England and Old Time contradancing music, I’m trying to figure out how to back up American folk singing in a guitar, piano, and bass group. Sometimes there’s a banjo or mandolin too.
Liz, I have been following fiddle tutorials for a good number of years now on plenty various channels - your style of showing and teaching is one of the best ! Keep up your fine work :-) greetings from the distant Western coasts of Canada -
I have been needing a video like this. Going to a hymn sing tonight(tends to have a celtic flare) and often we can have 3-7 violins and I'm not very good at backup, I will try and incorporate some of this. Thanks!
Learning my first fiddle tune. Camptown Races.Simple version from Old-Time Fiddle for complete ignoramus. Started violin 13 month ago. Some videos whit slower tempo would be helpful. Thank you for your lessons.

First class information and demonstration. Thank you Liz. 👍
Excellent teacher.
This is a great video! Great song and the sound of both parts together is awesome!!!
Thanks! Needed this. My groups tend to have a lot of violins and little in the way of backup.
Such a great introduction! Hope to see a part 2 for minor tunes as well
Thanks.

I record the songs on my computer and slow them down. Takes 3 minutes, and helps. I use Garageband. Good luck.
THANK YOU!!!!! 😊 🙏 😊 🙏
Bravo! Just what I needed to prepare for my first jam.
Take me as your student master 🙏🏻
