Hi Sam: This was a beautiful location and the misty environment looks amazing. I find it very interesting to see winter in the UK with much evidence of snow as compared to what we have in Canada. I really enjoyed the images that you captured and shared during the video. The image of the young tree is really engaging. While it is sad to see the 'old' tree coming down, it is part of the 'circle of life' and I really like the image of the exposed interior the image. Keep well . . . Cheers, Keith
The EVF was one of two main reasons for me going mirrorless. For the landscape photographer shooting in varying light, being able to do everything through the viewfinder is amazing. Hardly ever use the LCD screen anymore! Cracking set of images and while they might not be to everyone's taste, you have to take images for yourself, not what others might like. :-) If you get snow, send it down here as well! lol
Very well said Julian! Yes, I'm definitely a convert to the EVF now, I know I've been dragging my heels a bit! I really liked the one on the Lumix we borrowed last year, so that was the start of the conversion, and now I'm fully fledged! This weekend will be our last in the south as we're moving on Monday, so snow in these woods is now looking unlikely, but I'd say the chances up north are a bit higher so I'll be sure to try and send it down your way when it comes! ;) Sam
Congratulations on your new toy with the R5. Hope you have lots of fun using it. Great conditions and wonderful captures of woodlands during winter. . Indeed, sad about that tree....beautiful last shot of that tree. And I know what you mean about coming to woodlands to escape the stress of life....I enjoy going to my local woodlands living in London and there is always something new to explore....hope you & Hannah are settling down well in Scotland.
Thank you very much Wajid! These places really do provide a refuge, and must be especially important when living somewhere like London. Thank you very much, we will be moving up next week, but I have at least one more video to come from Oxfordshire beforehand! S.
Great conditions there for you Sam. It's nice that you are documenting those woods to reflect back on after your move. Shame about the tree but i guess life must come to an end sometime. Glad you took the image of it. Some really nice images as usual. Hope you enjoy your new adventures with your new camera. All the best mate.
Thank you very much Tim, I'm really glad to have a good record of these woods. I think I might have to print out a small selection of my favourite images from here to remind myself of it. S.
Thank you very much Brett! We've just finished moving up to the Highlands now, so really looking forward to getting out into the Scottish landscapes with the R5, I'm sure it well see some good use over the coming months! S.
Wow a beautiful set of images Sam! Sorry to hear about the tree but as you say the cycle of life goes on and it will be home to many other creatures now. One of my favourite local trees recently had a large section snap off, thankfully it is still standing although not as photogenic as it once was. I like the close up shot, definitely worth doing some of those especially with subjects you know well!
Thank you very much! I'm definitely glad to have some nice images of this tree when it was in it's prime, I 'm planning to print a couple of them to keep as a record. I'm really glad you liked the close-up image as well, I'm never too sure how those kinds of images will be received, I know they're not to everyone's taste but I love them! S.
Thanks very much Brian! That image is one that I've taken in quite a few different seasons now, so I'm hoping it will come together as a nice little project. Thanks for watching! Sam.
Thank you very much Richard, and a very happy new year to you as well (apologies if I'm a little late with that!). I really appreciate that, I do think that photography should be a peaceful pastime wherever possible, so it's good to know that the videos convey that too! Sam
Beautiful Sam. With the winter senes, the fallen old tree, pastel shades, mists, the lovely music and your reflections, this felt to me like an emotional farewell. A fitting tribute to the relationship you've built with this lovely place. Great job my friend.
Thank you very much Ian, it was a bit emotional, I don't think I'll make it back this last weekend, although perhaps I could sneak in a quick farewell if I can! If you are back over this way yourself, you might have to go and take some images of it to send up to me! :) S.
This has to be one of my favourite videos of yours Sam, and you know I've seen all of them! The emotional connection you have with this amazing woodland is so endearing and it honestly made me feel quite emotional watching it this morning. Your beautiful, misty images were just gorgeous as always Sam and your music warms my heart and calms my soul in these crazy times. I was actually quite happy for you that you got to photograph your favourite tree at the end of its life, a full circle moment before you move away. The photographs of your tree inside the trunk will be a treasured memory for you, I completely understand that. I'm guessing by now you've already moved to Scotland, so I really hope you did get some snow in your woodland to complete your collection, but if not, these ones are just gorgeous. I can now start my day with a calm soul and quiet mind after watching you Sam, thank you. Hope you and Hannah have a great week. 😊
Thank you Angie! Unfortunately, we're moving up this week (loading the van today) and the snow didn't come :( . I do have a couple of snowy images from last year though in a different part of the estate that owns these woods, so that will have to do! :) Sam
Wow, some stunning images in this video mate, i am not surprised you like to shoot here and will miss the place when you move. So many really lovely images, liked the cool misty tones and for me 9:40 was my favourite, i think, so hard to choose as they were all great. Also congratulations on the new camera no messing straight in R5 ! Took me a little longer to get used to the EVF on my Eos R but i am now a convert also ! Sure you will produce some stunning work with it for years to come, take care mate all the best !
Thank you very much Lee! I think that one might be my favourite as well, I love the way the big tree on left looms ominously over the path. I'll definitely miss this place a lot, I'm thinking of having a series of these images printed to keep as a record, but also looking forward to exploring some different woodlands around Torridon! S.
Hi Sam! Happy New Year. Personally I really like that image you shared at 7:35 into the video. I take lots of images like that, and then I think "Why am I taking photos of the bark on the trees?" So it's reassuring that someone else likes that kind of thing too!
Hi Ash, don't worry, you're definitely not alone! I'm always photographing bark, but the images don't always make it into the videos. It has certainly led to a few interesting conversations with confused members of the public who are wondering what I'm doing (especially when I have the vlogging camera set up as well!) S.
Wonderful conditions there Sam, and great images to add to your collection of this solace of yours. I totally get your connection with that fallen tree, sad but circle of life as you say. Patiently waiting with you for snow too! Oh, and thanks for the end card mate, much appreciated
Thanks Jamie! I think the snow is looking a bit unlikely now unfortunately, we will be moving next week (and I'm now going there isn't any snow to have to drive up in!). I will definitely miss this place, although I'm looking forward to exploring some of the woodlands up around Torridon! S.
Hi Sam. Beautiful images as usual and your passion for your special place and the environment in general is infectious. Truely inspirational. Thank you for sharing yours and Hannah’s photographic journey (and otter obsession) with us. Safe travels to your new home. I very much look forward to your next video.
Thank you very much Gene! We will be making the move this coming weekend and although we'll miss these Oxfordshire trees (and Hannah is definitely going to miss her otter) we're looking forward to finding some new places to share! Sam.
A lovely video Sam conveying your passion for that particular place. I love the whole set of images and their cool subdued tones, making them some of my favourite woodland photos of the past couple of years.
Wow, thank you very much Mark, I really appreciate that! I will definitely miss this place, but I'm glad to have a good record of it. Many thanks for watching, Sam.
Beautiful photos of the trees with cool blue tones. I'm sure you will find a new local woodland or forest in Scotland. I also love the EVF on the R5, myself coming from the 5D Mark 2. Being long sighted, it's very useful to adjust the dioptre so I can view it without glasses. On windy days using a higher ISO on the R5 gives very clean images - I tend to use ISO 400 or 800 if very windy. You may already know, but with the R5 stick to ISO values which double in value, I.e. 200, 400, 800, 1600. E.g. ISO 1600 will give a cleaner image than say ISO 1250.
Thanks Russ, yes there are certainly some lovely woods to look forward to after the move! I read recently that the Beinn Eighe reserve has now reached the point where it should be self-sustaining, which was great to hear. It is good to hear that the higher ISO's are clean on the R5, I think I probably should have pushed the ISO a bit higher in some of these images. I didn't know that about the double values though, I'll definitely be looking that up, thanks for the tip! S.
Lovely conditions and nice to hear your connection with the place 👍 I think the EVF is great for everything but I long for a mirror for astro/aurora but even then it's not a massive hardship.
Thank you Andrew! I'm hoping to do some more astro work after the move, when I will finally have some clear skies to work with (and maybe even the occasional aurora!), but we're keeping the 5D so I'll be interested to see how it compares! S.
Another great video, Sam. How are you finding the R5 with the EF lenses and adapter? It's mainly my collection of expensive lenses that prevents me jumping to the R series.
Thank you Alan! We had similar concerns as we will be keeping our 5D's as there are two of us and we need multiple cameras, so won't be getting rid of our EF glass any time soon. To be honest though, they work completely flawlessly with the adapter so I wouldn't worry about it. I was thinking I would at least change the 24-105 for an RF version, but having used it a few times I don't feel the need to rush. The only drawback is that the lenses feel a bit long with the adapter (especially the 70-200), but actually the R5 is slimmer than the 5D, and with the adapter it's pretty much the same depth, so it doesn't make a lot of difference. S.
In this video it wasn't that cold so I'm just wearing Rab 'Forge' glove liners, which are 46% merino wool. They're really comfortable and I also use them as liners in colder weather, paired with Mountain Equipment 'Mountain' gloves, which are both warm and waterproof. I have a few friends who use the Vallerret photographer's gloves which also look great, but I haven't tried those myself yet! S.

Ahh don’t know how I missed this video, love the fog really unclutters the madness of woodland. Well done sam , hope Hannah’s well
Thanks David! Yes, she's very well thank you! We're looking forward to a few days off over Christmas! :)

so many photographs you took from same spot, amazing photographer to follow as idol.
Thank you Amrit!
Thank you very much for that relaxed video! Just what I needed. And I'm feeling sad for the tree.
Greetings,
Felix
Thanks Felix! It was sad to see the tree had come down, but I'm glad I had some photos of it in it's prime! S.
Lovely images again Sam. Good luck with the move up north.
Thanks very much Gordon, we can't, wait to be back up there! S.
🙌🙌love the shots
Well done mate, love that old tree at 12.48, enjoy the R5
Thank you very much Brett! We've just finished moving up to the Highlands now, so really looking forward to getting out into the Scottish landscapes with the R5, I'm sure it well see some good use over the coming months! S.

Thanks very much Brian! That image is one that I've taken in quite a few different seasons now, so I'm hoping it will come together as a nice little project. Thanks for watching! Sam.
