Glen Affric - Autumn landscape photography and the importance of scouting!

- Glen Affric is one of the most spectacular locations in Scotland for autumn landscape and woodland photography. The autumn colours in Glen Affric this year have been on another level. It's an area that I've only visited once before though, and the location I visited on this morning, in the perfect conditions for autumn woodland photography, was an area I was not familiar with. Despite this trip highlighting for me the need to scout locations beforehand, rather than turning up in fantastic conditions without having any idea where to go, I still think this was a successful trip and I came away with some autumn landscape and woodland photographs that I was pleased with.

The last shot of the glowing lochside birch was the best of the lot in my opinion - absolutely gorgeous image.
Thanks Mike!
Cracking conditions and images, Sam. Autumn this year in the Highlands was spectacular.
It's been a cracker this year Steve! And it's even managed to coincide with weekends for me too, which is almost unheard of!
Lovely work, Sam
Great work Sam, loved all the images. What an amazing location.
Thanks Richard, it's such a special place this, I'll definitely be spending a lot more time here in the future!
Wow Sam, stunning photos, they almost look like oil paintings some of those, best I have seen for a while tbh, cheers,
Thank you very much Mick, I really appreciate that! Such an amazing place this, especially in these conditions!
Some fantastic photos, Sam. I love the last one.
Thank you very much David, I've just had that one printed and it looks great! :)
Some stunn9ing images there! Love your careful approach towards nature and environment as well. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you!
Thank you very much Arpad!
OMZ.. how have I not found you in my feed before Sam Bose?? ten points to Gryffindor - I'm leaving this TAB open to re-watch later tonight as a way to wind down on my Friday night ( here in Sydney ).. amazing images, wonderful enjoyable vlog format, and narration that makes us feel like we are there with you.. wow.. thank you.. keep making magic happen !! cheers, @dez_blanchfield
Thank you very much Dez!
Nicely done Sir. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you very much for watching!
So good!
Thank you Darren!
Really interesting video and superb images Sam.
Thank you very much Peter!
so good, uplifting. Nice work too
Thank you very much!
You got some lovely photos, Sam.
Thanks Rob!
Enjoyed the video as usual Sam.
The conditions you had were amazing.
I wouldn't apologise for taking an image that other people have taken because you saw the shot and took it and if not you wouldn't have it.
Stunning image's as usual and the last one was amazing.
Look forward to the next one mate.
Thank you very much Tim, it was really nice to be able to take that image in these conditions, and I'm certainly happy with it!
I thought I had amazing conditions here! Brilliant video mate, I especially like your last two images of the vlog!
Thanks Ellis, and thank you for giving me the inspiration to get down there 😂! Definitely worth it!
Fabulous images Sam. My favourite is the group of trees at 5:22 but the final image of the lone tree ran a very close second. Kind regards Robin
Thank you Robin!
Fantastic images Sam 👌👌
Thank you Carlos!
Great shots man, 👍
Thanks James!
Well lush Mr Bose! You got lucky with the conditions but it looks like you made the most of them so forget that "I need time and poise" thought. Likewise if you accidently stumble on a scene shot by someone else, it's hardly plagiarism, just look at it that SB just stumbled on it to 🙂
Cracking shot of the birch at the end, oh and well done taking time out to mention being careful and the rewilding.
Thank you Andrew! Such an amazing place, but I definitely need to spend some more time down there to get to know it a bit better!
Wow, what a day with a couple of outstanding images. A very enjoyable watch. Thank you Sam, well done.
Thank you very much John!
Some stunning work here mate, that’s as good a take as I’ve seen on that shot. Still not been to Glen Affric I might have a trip up if we get some snow next few weeks
Thank you very much Stu! You need to get up here! Definitely pop me a message if you are heading up ;)
Very atmospheric sam , never apologise for taking shots that have been done before.
Thank you David!
Fantastic location and photos 🙂👍
It really is an amazing place! Thanks you!
@@BosePhotography 👍🙂
An enjoyable watch of a stunning location...nothing wrong with capturing the "Baxter Classic",and that last image was my fave of the group!
Thank you very much Neil!
I am speechless.
I guess there are some places that just have an emotional impact on us and after seeing Glen Affric through your eyes this place had that effect on me.
I first came across your channel after you popped up when searching New Zealand on youtube and you did a really good job of showcasing NZ.
I'm a Kiwi photographer who moved to Ireland mid 2021. My Irish wife and fellow mad person with a camera, are planning a trip to Scotland in the future and now seeing your video I know where I will definitely go.
You video is just wonderful.
I also wonder what the place would look like when the heather is in flower?
Thanks for posting the video.
Thank you very much Tony! This really is a wonderful place, I'm slightly kicking myself for not spending more time here earlier! Hannah and I visited a few years ago, but we went to a different part, and there's so much more to explore. I'll certainly be spending more time here in the future. I hope you make it over soon, it will definitely be worth it, and I'm sure it will be amazing when the heather is in flower too!
@@BosePhotography I was going to say it looked like an awesome place for when the heather is in flower.
You guys are now tasked with a mission lol
Might be time to have a look up there soon for the heather.
A brilliant vlog this Sam and what a fantastic place. I said this in your last vlog, but again these images are simply stunning. That shot at 5:22 is a corker!
Thank you very much mate, I was wondering around this place and thinking how much you need to get up there too!
As per usual Sam your photography stands out, the way you try to make others be more environmentally aware when in these locations is very typical of one who cares. One or two outstanding images in your bag from this trip. Take care my friend keep taking your pictures of your vision a unique picture seeing Sam.
Thank you very much Tom! The conditions on this morning were rather special. I hope the Iceland preparations are going well. S
Good to see you back! Hope everything is OK?
Those images are absolutely terrific!
Hi Joe, hope you’re doing ok mate! We’re doing great thanks, absolutely loving our new surroundings!
@@BosePhotography That's good to hear. I thought you would be super busy making videos after the move :)
@@JoeMaranophotographyah yeah, we changed pans a bit and I have a new job, so don’t have so much time, but I’m putting them out when I feel like it!
Another awesome video Sam, and that last shot? Gorgeous. So were the earlier ones, even if you say it's not original, that backdrop with the cloud and mountain is just timing at its best
Thank you very much Alan, this was definitely a successful trip!
Hi Sam: I loved the images that you have created during this video. While Simon may have been there before and created some impressive images, your experiences and images within the woodland are unique to you. After all, no two images are exactly the same. As soon as your click on the shutter that image can never be perfectly re-created. Your final image of the golden birch is spectacular. This certainly gives a new perspective to the 'lone tree' shot that everyone is seeking. Keep well . . . Keith (Canada).
Thank you very much Keith! Absolutely agree, I don’t tend to go out with the purpose of trying to recreate images that have been taken before, but it is nice to be able to out your own ‘stamp’ on well known images sometimes, especially when conditions are special, like they were in this case! I hope you are both doing well. S
Reminds a lot of what is done in music these days. You record digitally, bounce out to analog, and then convert back to digital. Get the analog “benefits” while ease of digital process. Cool idea.
My question is, going forward if you wanted to do this, would you consider doing the whole process yourself?
Hi Jarrett, I am actually starting to dabble in a bit of film photography and am tempted to try setting up a dark room too, so yes, there's definitely something appealing about a start-to-finish DIY approach!
That house is the family home of the lost Everest climber . Was a documentary on Netflix
Ah, I will have to go and check that out, thank you!
Some lovely images of the trees Sam, but for me the very last shot on the way home was my favourite. Incidentally you mentioned 'Headless Chicken Mode' but I can't find it on my R6 (just the usual Tv, Av, C1,C2 etc) is it unique to the R5?😄
🤣 Haha! That’s got me in stitches 😂. Yeah, sorry Mark, the headless chicken mode only came with the latest firmware update for the R5. it’s really annoying though, I can’t seem to get out of it!
Hi, I am visiting Glen Affric next month Feb '24. Since I noticed your video footage is recent, can you give me any guidance on how to get to the area where you were shooting. I have also seen Simon Baxter video and this trees, I would like that vicinity. Can you please give me any points to get there. thank you. JS
Hi Jacqueline, I hope that you have a good trip there in February. This area was on the south side of Loch Affric, but the whole area is worth exploring if you have the time. S
