He was gonna be a FA that summer & told Denver he wasnt gonna resign which gives them an opportunity to move him & get something back, happens all the time in the NBA, still happens now. Denver traded key pieces to the team & Melo didn’t want to rebuild, that’s not the same as demanding to be traded no matter what. Denver didn’t want Melo anymore & forced his hand, same with Dame in Portland. The media paints them as forcing their way out when the teams made moves for the future when their stars were tryna win now.

He didn't create anything. Kiki, Issel, Skywalker, Beck...English, Lever, Dunn...Mutombo, LaPhonso....those guys built the Nuggets and he just added to them. He also had 6 first round exits in 7 years and never even smelt a Chip or an MVP. Jokic wore #15 before and is now the rightful owner of that number. Melo didn't do enough to warrant a retired jersey.

Late 70s with David Thompson (Michael Jordan's favorite player), 80's run and gun with Alex English, Kiki, Fat Lever and Calvin Natt. And A few good years in the mid 90s with Mutombo, Robert Pack, Rauf, Ellis. Carmelo had a great year in 2009, every other year with him the Nuggets underachieved in the playoffs.

I don’t understand why everyone now sounds as if Melo is an all time player or something. Perennial all star, most definitely. Talented, sure. And I liked the cat too but let’s be real, he never lead a team to the finals. Sniffed the conference finals once and got swept. Never an MVP, I might be wrong but I don’t know that he ever even lead the league in scoring. His effort on defense was always questionable too. He did play 8 whole years with the Nuggets, which I respect, but let’s be real. Jokic has already accomplished a lot more than he did in his career, even if you take away the chip. I personally don’t think it’s a great look when a player is pushing for a statue or number retirement. It’s up to the team and fans to push for it or want it.

I grew up on basketball from 2003-2014, the year I graduated high school and I remember Melo as a Knick at this point. Forced his way out of Denver and never made too much noise in the playoffs. If I remember correctly it was only two years where I really thought Denver even had a chance.

So yes, the organization was salty over Melo leaving and many of my fellow Nuggets fans co-signed it. I hold the Melo torch educating younger folks of Melo’s impact in Denver. Without Melo, no winning seasons, no run for the Finals, no CFs w/ Lakers. He was the reason Nuggets had a team in the early '00. Melos 15 may not end up in rafters, but one of the best Nuggets of all time.

I've been a diehard Nuggets fan since Melo's first year. Not once since leaving have I ever heard him give praises for his time here or to the fans. Everytime, he just talks about what if he got drafted to Detroit and could've been a champion right away. Nuggets put good teams around him, unfortunately the West was unbelievably loaded. If you have 50wins, you'd barely make 8th seed and right away have to face the Spurs or Lakers. If Denver was in the Eastern conference, those same Nuggets would have at least made a Finals appearance during that time. Post Nuggets career, the only accomplishment was one good year with the Knicks, but that same year Nuggets were still better and even broke the franchise record for wins(and only had 3 home loses).
Nuggets fans and the organization would have no problem welcoming Melo back and celebrating his time here, but he first needs to stop being petty and actually give props to the city who did everything for him. It's no coincidence that he announced his retirement right when Nuggets clinched their Finals spot. He had a chance to be the unquestioned all time face of a franchise, but he took it for granted, now someone else seized that role and even did it in his former number(which Jokic wore in Serbia btw)

The one to blame on this issue is the Nuggets organization.
