“Gentlemen. Make sure you vacuum your beard” Classic 😂 id love to make fake boulders and slate pieces for my flat rock scorpion like this to give him a natural but safe habitat should he knock anything over 😊
Okay, I’ve watched a ton of DIY hide videos, and I would 100% say these are the most impressive, and in-depth. The funny thing is I already have almost all the tools for these because my spouse does model railroading and uses these tools to build and decorate their layout.
This looks ahhhhmazing! Definitely something i want to do in the future. Tip, as a nail tech i can understand the dust issue, but you can find a way top prop the shopvac hose to the side or above (few inches away, no more) the hose while you're drilling to avoid so much mess at the end. Much love!
Just wanted to give my little personal tip - I used to use the Dremel to shape the piece, but I’ve found in my experience that using a hot knife, or even a soldering iron to melt and cut away any excess is a lot easier to clean up. Using the Dremel would make a huge mess whenever I would use it. However it’s still my took of choice when sanding down minor imperfections. I just wouldn’t use it to remove a lot of material.
Thank you so much for sharing with us. I’ve been looking for a diy hide for my hamster that isn’t wood or paper material. I’m definitely going to be building the corner hide with a platform and ramp
This is amazing! Thank you for the video! I'm trying to my first diy hides for my snake and getting overwhelmed trying to figure out how to do it. This makes it so simple!
the hide for cheeks was so so inspiring, i had a vision of a sort of modern flinstones house style enclosure for a new little beardie but no idea how to start, these videos are amazing and help so much to bring my desert aesthetic to life while still being suitable for my lizard friend, thank you!!
I would love to have a go at making a hide or two for my Froggy babies. Thank you for sharing how you make them. One day I might pluck up the courage to try making a hide!
What sealant have u used on end?it is reptile safe?what total end cure time before allow to put to vivarium?are sealant safe to be used as basking spot? Thank you
Love the video!! I have been debating on what sealent to use. I bought a grout a mortar sealer, but im not sure if i should just use an acrylic sealer instead.. im paranoid about it being toxic
Great video!! Made a jumbo sized corner piece for my Colombian boa for his new 125gal tank, since the biggest size hide was super expensive and still not big enough for the snake. Wish I could share the pic of the finished product, thanks again for the amazing vid
Hello! I was wondering if these had some good weight to them, I'm thinking of making one for my ball python but he tends to flip his hides over so I wanted to make something he couldn't flip over easily.
Would it be safe to cut the foam with a hot wire? I keep tarantulas and I want to make some scenic backdrops for their enclosures but I don't want to risk fumes hurting them
Nice hides. You could use pond foam it would last longer. You do say the gaps " need" to be filled, why? The gaps are actually benefical. How? You may ask. Well the gaps would be voids to filled with grout to act as an anchor. In fact you could put many small holes say 1/4" in diameter, and deep all around the surface. The thinner the grout the more likely it will crack and fall off. Great ideas non the less.
UmbreonLuv1 I’ve never had to scrub mine because they’ve never been pooped on, but I’m sure they could be scrubbed gently. Just nothing super abrasive. Because I found it does flake a bit when I accidentally bump it or scrape it against something. I just clean mine with my regular disinfectant!
I would love to make for my bearded dragon. What measurement should I use for an adult dragon. Also thinking to do for my ball python. Any ideas on the measurement for her as well.
Sarah Buddin that’s going to depend on the size of your enclosure and the size of your animals, honestly. For the dragon, make sure they can fit comfortably, without having to curl up their tail. For the ball python, make sure they can fit snugly, without being totally squished. Hope that helps!
I know this is an old video but I had to take a chance and ask: would it be safe to make hides for geckos from natural clay? (Meaning not polymer clay or anything like that)
I know you didnt ask me, but yeah I use air dry clay I bought on amazon and if you read the ingredients and ensure its non toxic you're fine, especially because you are sealing it at the end anyways making sure it clearly states its non toxic is probably the most important thing though :)
Kelly Kearney yay!! It’s the exact same product as the paint-on polyurethane, it’s just the spray version :) we prefer it because it makes the process 10x faster and it’s much more even and smooth! But both work perfectly fine!
Great video, Im super interested in making my own reptile hides in the future! I have a question though, How long do you wait until using the hides in your reptiles cage? And have you ever PH tested your hides?
Owlco thank you! Once the sealant has cured for 24 hours, it’s perfectly safe but I always wait at least another 48 before adding it to the enclosure :) And I’ve never pH tested them. Is there a reason why they’d need to be tested? Lol
Owlco ahh I see lol I didn’t initially think of that because I personally don’t use these in my aquariums! I would imagine it would be similar to using other ornaments. It may alter the pH by a tiny bit but probably nothing drastic :)
You absolutely can, but I would suggest a different sealant! You'll need something that's meant for submersion in water, like aquariums. There are many to choose from, so definitely look into them and get what would be best for you :)
Roos Zoo absolutely!! The only difference would potentially be the sealant used. You may need one for more humid environments. The hides in this video can hold up to humidity but aren’t meant to be used in SUPER moist environments if that makes sense. We used an indoor sealant on these specific hides but an oil-based sealant meant for indoor/outdoor use (if allowed to totally and completely cure before introducing it to the animal) would work best for those types of environments! Depending on the husbandry of that specific invertebrate :)
Hello, I’m very interested in trying this method for making my own hides. As I think your video is amazing, but I was curious if you could maybe answer a few questions I had first? I was reading up on the sealer and it said it was not intended to be put in pet cages. I was wondering if you have ever had any problems with it affecting ur reptiles after it had dried, has ur geckos tried to bite the hide and been affected by the sealer in any way, or would you say it’s safe to use? Also, sorry last question, do you think this would hold up and be fine in a more humid tank for ball pythons? Thank you for your time and this helpful video!
Shadyabyss thanks for the feedback!! I haven’t seen any issues whatsoever with using the sealant in my reptile enclosures! Once it’s fully dried/cured (which takes a minimum of 24 hours but I always wait at least 3-4 days), it’s perfectly safe! And none of my animals have tried to chew it! As far as humidity, if it’s for ball pythons, it’s probably fine, as that is more of a 60%-ish range, but if it’s for a much higher humidity environment, like having a constant humidity above 70-80%, I recommend the exterior sealant which is more oil-based :) The sealant I used works very well with humidity spikes but probably not for constant humidity.
Hi, I’m new to ur channel and I just wanna say I love ur videos.. you explain everything in detail so well.. You guys should sell ur hides, I would totally buy some!
I calculated about $5 a hide! The initial cost of everything is a bit more, of course, but we can get several hides within everything purchased and then they’re each super cheap at the end of the day!
Mindless Abby the only way I know to make diy fake plants is to use a clay base and add a lot of different fake plants into it, which I certainly can do :)
Are these materials- paint, glue, grout, gap filler, etc. safe for the reptiles? I think these are so awesome! Job well done! I just always heard you have to be careful with glues, and such, as the fumes are bad for reptiles. I'm guessing they are ok though....
Phat Mama yes! As long as the materials are fully sealed and the sealant has been left to fully cure for a few days, you’re good to go! If there is still a strong scent, leave it to sit longer :)
@@BBsBeasties could these same materials be used to make water bowls as well? I'm trying to find the best material to make some neat looking water bowls.

Corner style, for a young ball python I’ll be getting soon! When he gets too big (or if he already is) I’ll use it for my leopard gecko! He absolutely loves hides. My username on Instagram is Samsfishies :)
Raven Long absolutely not. A hide this size would cost $20 or more at the store. These hides cost around $5 total. And they’re custom, meaning no one else has them, and they were made exactly how I wanted.
Fantastic video, just about to start this journey 🤔 because we have just inherited a adult Leppard gecko 🙄, my hubby is a builder ! Good with his hands 🤭and the tank we got with him is not suitable for him now. This is the way to go, making a unique living environment 👌 thank you for your videos! 😘
