My adult son has schizophrenia and planned on taking an action that would have unalived himself. He believes he's immortal and that a housemate was a government agent planning on testing him. (This is my son's baseline while on meds.). If this poor young man who lit himself on fire has a similar illness, he was so afraid of something happening and felt that was his (or society's) only escape.

I'm 63yo and I find it hard to understand what on earth would prompt anyone in this country to self emoliate themselves. In authoritarian countries, where the people have no voice, it makes more sense, but here? Only thing I can think of is mental health care is so lacking here and so many people get into bad places in their minds. Sad state of affairs.
So that's actually his point. In his manifesto he explains that we've been led to think we have a voice when in reality we live in a two party "game" designed to make Dems and Republicans fight each other instead of realizing that almost zero of our elected officials have any interest in carrying out the will of the people who voted them into office. AKA he felt that this was the only way for people to hear him, and the fact that his manifesto and attached "proof" have been wiped from the internet is certainly suggestive that he was right about the manipulation--and semi wrong about this being drastic enough for anyone to hear it :(. That's also why he picked this location. The manifesto has nothing to do with Trump--he just went there because he knew that no media/news source could ignore it if he did it there.
