It’s worth understanding from an electronics perspective that USB has a 1000Hz poling rate limit so at best there will be a 1ms delay on transmission of torque demand and 1ms return of position data. This may seem fast to us as the average human has 150ms reaction to touch, 170ms to audio and 250ms to visual stimulation, but in terms of electronics 1ms is a long, long time. This creates a positive feedback loop and is similar to the effect of bringing a microphone close to a speaker, in that case the frequency is limited by the bandwidth of the amplifier where gain rolls off above a certain frequency. In the case of motors the oscillation frequency is a tied to the update rate but the amplitude is proportional to slew rate and rotational mass. The small amount of mechanical damping and inertia created by your hand prevents the small overshoot from developing in to a positive feedback oscillation. Using filters is a way of creating some negative feedback which is great for increasing stability at the cost of gain in an audio amplifier, in a ffb system it reduces detail and response. Just hold your wheel and use the minimum amount of filters if any. The majority of these DD wheelbases are built with or developed from industrial servo motors but are severely limited by the use of a very slow transmission protocol and a nearly 30 year old DirectX DirectInput API.

What I love most about modern sim racing equipment and software is the versatility of the products provided. For example if you have a motion rig you can set up your wheel using the software to act more like a real steering wheel and route more of the chasis/ sus telemetry to the motion rig/ transducers. And if you just have a wheel then you can still get the telemetry info to pass through the wheel and use the software to amplify the effects you normally wouldnt feel or lightly feel through the steering coloumn. 😮 As telemtry data advances so will the effects we can use to better the experience. Great to see high force DD coming down to a more reasonable price. Comparing the days of Leo Bodnar DIY from 10 years ago to now, the difference is like night and day. We have come a long way. --- I can share my own preference for Fanatec DD. Disable everything, and instead of using INT (interpolation), Set Damper at 16 and Inertia 6. This has served me well in iRacing in BMW GT4, and Dallara 217. My rule of thumb: Inertia half the value of damper. You can try 20/10, or 25/12, but I would lower Inertia a bit at these higher levels. This will lower Oscillations*, and preserve suspension and tire feel. Track detail is also not lost, and sometimes a bit harsh on the kerbs. Damper will dampen the feeling, but Inertia will counteract that, so I still have a feeling that the physical wheel is connected to the steering column. For me personally, this is much better than using INT. With higher INT values, I feel like the wheel in my hands is not connected to the tires, and this induces that strange "disconnected" feeling, and immersion is lost. *I found that Oscillations occurs on some cars at some tracks and not others. I think this is also due to the setup of the car.
Thanks for the video. Good to hear the inputs on tradeoffs. I have a sim magic alpha and I notice the notchiness but also a ton of wheelbase audible noise if I dont turn smoothness way up on assetto corsa. Is this a known thing with the SM Alpha? How does it compare to other wheelbases?
This looks to be the case with all bases and AC must be very rough with all of them! It is not Simagic problem but the way those bases work buddy! You can try with pulling up the Feedback frequency filter up for example 5 to 7 which will help with less smoothness filter!
I went from heusinkveld ultimates to srp formulas . I can say the srp are more accurate in reading and you dont have the negative effects of elastomers peaking while pressing fast and hard .. im a hard braker at 130kg on the ultimates and 98procent on the srp pedals but the srp deals better with it . More consistent and better feeling when bleeding of for trailbraking . And on top the brake pedal feels so real
Hi Chepi , once again thanks for your extensive review, always a pleasure to spend time with you hehe I just noticed that you got a nrg style QR with the wheel you use to test this base, did you connect the VNM QR to the NRG style one or it is possible to use a NRG style QR on that wheelbase? I cant wait until you get to try the simlabs wheelbase! You are gonna be blown away. Also im sry but I dont mind oscillations, imo they are part of details sometimes. Of course not a crazy amount but yeah. People try dampening oscillations out way to much imo. I so much prefer feeling things feeling a bit on straights. Sometimes the road textures create movement and shaking. I feel that its amazzing and ill never try to push out my oscillations much. Most wheelbases dont have insane oscillations. Im also not letting go of the wheel mid straights. But nost wheelbqde ive used have sone wobble or shake to it. Aka oscialltions whek going down straights. Especially going down straights at going high speed. Also tbh I love the way this vnm wheelbase looks like it moves qith its ffb. Also they already released the uograde process you can buy less ffb now from them. Its crazy though that you said this wheelbase has more details then any other wheelbase.
Man, that SimLab with zero filtering and absolute smoothness kind of blew me away 😮 This must be some great achievement indeed 💪 About the oscillation and letting the wheel speak and read all road anomalies is preserving the tires too! In one of the endurance championships with my teammate we found I have 10% better tires after full stint of 1.5 hour and the only difference in telemetry was my wheel speaking all the time even on the straight and in the entire corner process! It was quite eye opening for us 😮
@@chepilevski I can't wait until you get to review asetek also. I feel thats the base that will be your top wheelbase as favorites if you reviewed it tbh. I think it does everything simucube does, without the extra noises and just feels so detailed yet controlled and so good. Plus I mean native support for 90% of wheels on the market is insanity. So good can't beat that imo.
@@chepilevski so do you think its to much oscillating if u cant take one hand off the wheel i got a r21 and it seem like no matter what i do i cant get my oscillating dowm
if you check the comments, someone pointed that putting the equalizer to 400-500 got read from oscillation without using much filtering on AC . Maybe worth trying that
I have another question because you’re the expert. How much nM do you feel is perfect the perfect sweet-spot for GT/formula? Do you feel too much nM could feel unrealistic? Thanks.
I’m usually perfect with 12nm for maximum performance on the track as I can feel everything I need without fighting the wheel! More can make it feel bit more realistic and fun but for pure performance I’m fan of 12nm
@ I have a genuine question. You said that 12 nM is perfect and you don’t have to fight the week but you’ve been using the VNM32 for two years. My question is why use the VNM32 if 12nM is perfect? Thanks.
@ the advantage of the biggest bases is, even at lower settings they give bit more details in the small effects and are bit more alive but is not like day and night difference! Also running big base with low power they run super cool and never get tired. Also some cars have weaker ffb and need to be pushed from the bases without clipping the signal! There are few advantages having bigger base but is not necessary!
I’m very happy with the VNM and will stay on my main rig for some time that’s for sure! The Simucube Pedals are also the best possible right now and the belt tensioner from Qubic System and the 4 QS210 actuators are everything I need💪 To be honest that setup is way beyond my dreams already!
Really really really nice content as usual. So I guees I can keep my vrs base for the moment. But I have a dilemma ! In your opinion, what's the best upgrade first, Activ pedals or motion ? Cheers my friend.
Thx brother🤛 My personal opinion is Qubic System Belt tensioner 😁 It adds amazing experience and has many effects including ABS , tire locks I many other! Knowing what each of those you asked does, my first purchase for sure will be the belt system 😁
How come I don’t see you using the belt tensioner? I paid $2k based on your praise of it and I’m still waiting after months. Hopefully it’ll be worth it.
Some interesting comments on oscillations here. I find myself struggling to decide on my FFB setup, and I think my main annoyance is that oscillations are not realistic - real cars do not get into massive tank slappers if you let go of the wheel in a straight line, they require a fair bit of provocation to get that out of shape. To me that signifies that there is some wrong with the force feedback signal and how it translates to wheel movement. Having said that, damping does remove detail, so it is a trade-off. I've been experimenting with higher damping and friction settings on my Invicta base and I find it is certainly more pleasant to drive, and interestingly it has made cars like the 992 GT3 in ACC easier to drive as it benefits from smoother inputs. More experimentation needed! Getting a VNM base in to test shortly too which will be very interesting to compare to the Asetek base 🤔
I believe because ffb is artificial force and exaggerate reality. I highly encourage everyone to test the entire spectrum of settings and decide what’s better for himself. Both end of the spectrum have advantages and disadvantages 🤷♂️
@@chepilevski Absolutely. There is also the aspect of this being an "open loop" system. The wheel does not really know how much force you are applying to it, it only knows position and applied voltage, everything else is inferred/calculated. I do sometimes wonder if these things could be made more realistic, without sacrificing detail, if there was a torque sensor on the shaft?
about the ffb details vs damper, friction and inertia topic, idk if you tried moza r9/r12 using ffb equlizer at max (all at 400-500) . I speak only as a AC drifter, that trough this setting i got rid of most of the oscilations, without using any damper or friction, while still retaining ffb details and the quick wheel speed reaction needed for catching slides and corrections. Now, i don't know if this translates the same in other games like IRacing or AMS2 as i don't play them... Also, if u wana try this make sure u use 100% game ffb, and road sens in moza app. I know ur busy so don't give too much attention to this. I just wanted to share my experience as i couldn't get this kind of feeling out of other base except moza... Take care and keep up the good work!🙏🥳🥳💪

If you were allowed to keep this base, would you make it your daily rider? if you were starting today in simracing with a "buy once cry once" mentality, which base would you buy?
I think at that moment this is the best value at those top end crazy torque bases considering the specs! If force feedback quality is top priority it is best bay in my opinion right now! If full ecosystem matters more then there are other more complete options. At the end of the day, differences are small and can’t go wrong with all high end bases which run super cold under normal use. If I have to choose this or SC2 pro which I love a lot, this for me will be better choice as it feels as good but have better specs and cost less! Simagic bases from other hand have huge choices in terms of wheels. Anyway, that’s like too long answer and the short one is, that’s the best choice in terms of money versus specs right now in the top end dd bases and knowing all will be my choice yes !

@@EugenioCiullo_V-Blog You just saved my life...I was thinking about SC2 pro to buy. Did you try maybe Asetek Invicta wheelbase? Do you know maybe is it any better than SC2 pro in the way of negative side?
I just bought a SC2 Pro. Upgraded from a Moza R5 bundle which got me into sim racing this last year. I’ve put in daily driving this year on my R5 and when it was time to upgrade I thought “I’m gonna get the one everyone says is the benchmark.” It has been eye opening. All I hear is how smooth the SC2 Pro is. Coming from an R5 which I got very used to and quite quick with, in my head I was like “this is gonna be the most amazing thing ever.” It was awful. Heartbreaking. Made noises I wasn’t used to, had this clunky/ notchy feeling. Wrote them and must say their customer service is great. Responded right away. They started telling me about the filters. I started applying them. Underneath all the new found detail has been this notchy/ clunky feel. The only way to make it go away and be that smooth is to filter out some of that detail I was realizing I had been missing. I want my comment to be objective, so as I’ve been sitting on this the last few days, cause it’s literally brand new, I’m thinking “these are all the same but all different. They all have their own personality don’t they?” And I’ve gotten a pretty good compromise in terms of my expectation of feel and reality. But should it be like that? I actually have some experience driving race cars with slicks on different surfaces. I want that feeling. And detail. But I don’t think it can be like that, because the spectrum of consumer is so broad. So now I have these new thoughts. Before it was like “SC2 is the benchmark and it’ll be the end all” and now, even though I have it in a good place, I wonder “is there something more suited for me?” I like some of that snap, I don’t want it muted to make the notchy feeling go away. I’m already better at handling my car and my times have come down, even with new pedals. I’ve made up most of that last 1 to 1.5 seconds that kept me from fighting for podiums just because I feel the road more. But I’m still wondering is there something better? Someone in one of your comments made a statement about reviews not having filters. I kind of like that. Which brings me to my second new thought. We are being told something is super smooth when that reviewer has it set up their way. That may not be what we want at all. I don’t like a lot of dampening or smoothing on my signal. But I also don’t want a coggy/ notchy/ grinding feeling either. If I’m maxing out that Reconstruction filter already, is it really a good thing? I will say it’s growing on me as it’s mostly dialed in now. It feels pretty good. But balancing that snap and the rubbery smooth to make it just right, while accepting how much you want to compromise is hard when you’ve dropped $1500 after taxes. To finish this off, I think it comes down to the reviewers. And more transparency and frankness about what the base is really like before any changes are made. I haven’t really seen that before. I would like to so people know what they’re getting and how to move forward with it. Thanks for always doing a solid job.
Man, I honestly felt your pain in this post and really have to make video about it 🙈 It is sad to hear your joy was stolen from wrongly set expectations for all of us. This topic really deserves dedicated video.
@ I hope I come across as fair in the post. From what I had before to now, as I’m still dialing it in, it’s a huge upgrade. My point really is that I had no idea what I was actually getting when I thought I did. And when I get it and am in shock at how noisy and gritty and clunky it is, that’s when I start hearing from people I reach out to that that’s normal. I have discovered most of the secret ingredients for my base to smooth that out. It still catches me out with a weird clunk and there’s still a little grind lying underneath, but I was never told about the noises or grit or clunkiness, only the smooth and detailed feedback of everything. I would like to be able to try a few different bases in the similar range such as the VNM 32 Nm or the Simagic U and just see for myself but that’s not possible really. Maybe a masterclass on filters. Like a deep dive that starts with “you just got your new high end wheelbase. What’s next?” kind of thing… And for the record I am growing to very much be happy with my purchase. I still wonder if there’s something better for me, but I am currently enjoying what I have so that’s what it’s all about. Thanks for the reply! I hope you have a great day filled with kick ass races
@ very reasonable post that’s for sure man! Someone else mentioned about the crazy noise and I’ve tested the VNM which has almost the same level without filters! As all bases work in the same principle they all are very noisy without adding filters to smooth the signal and feel like parts inside are getting apart. I don’t know why we never talked about and make aware people to not get scared something is wrong with their base 🙈 Without filters except the noise, the experience is also unpleasant as you can feel that in hands! My goal testing DD bases have always been how far I can apply filters before start washing the FFB effects from the road and for now what I have tested, the SC2 and VNM are the best in that regard but they also are very similar technology.
@ I appreciate this. I was in panic mode for most of this last week until I finally hit on a combination of everything that suddenly made a lot of it go away. Now it’s about understanding how to dial out the last of it without washing away the detail like you say. I would’ve looked hard at the VNM had I known more than I did when I bought it. I’m overall happy at this point with my investment, still some work to do to dial it in a little more. But I see it getting pretty close and I’ll have fun with it for quite a while. Like anything though I’m sure I’ll get the itch in the near future to see what I can do to improve the overall experience and down the rabbit hole I’ll go haha.

Thank you for the in depth explanation brother 🍻❤️
@@chepilevski Thank you for the honest review.
If just one person tries my Fanatec DD settings, and likes it, writing a wall of text was worth it. :)

Man, that SimLab with zero filtering and absolute smoothness kind of blew me away 😮
This must be some great achievement indeed 💪
About the oscillation and letting the wheel speak and read all road anomalies is preserving the tires too!
In one of the endurance championships with my teammate we found I have 10% better tires after full stint of 1.5 hour and the only difference in telemetry was my wheel speaking all the time even on the straight and in the entire corner process!
It was quite eye opening for us 😮
@@chepilevski exactly! This is exactly why I won't reduce oscillations if I don't need to. It truely can increase your times.

@@texnorthman maybe someone works on this already 😃
about the ffb details vs damper, friction and inertia topic, idk if you tried moza r9/r12 using ffb equlizer at max (all at 400-500) .

Some GT3 driver even didn’t hold the wheel when going full speed at Nordschleife that last long straight…: if I do that, I’ll crash with because of oscilation with 0 dampers etc on my Fanatec DD2…

99% of the sc2 pros sold all have different power supplies, they are sold for 450watt, but instead the majority 300w, others 320, others 360, but none have the 450W model, and this is incorrect information that is passed off by the site official;
I don't like bearings that are too weak, and many users have broken them;
The power supply connectors are undersized for the required amperage;
the power button is also undersized and there should be a relay to take care of the power line and there isn't....

I’ve put in daily driving this year on my R5 and when it was time to upgrade I thought “I’m gonna get the one everyone says is the benchmark.”
It has been eye opening. All I hear is how smooth the SC2 Pro is. Coming from an R5 which I got very used to and quite quick with, in my head I was like “this is gonna be the most amazing thing ever.”
It was awful.
Man, I honestly felt your pain in this post and really have to make video about it 🙈
It is sad to hear your joy was stolen from wrongly set expectations for all of us.
What’s next?” kind of thing…
And for the record I am growing to very much be happy with my purchase.
I don’t know why we never talked about and make aware people to not get scared something is wrong with their base 🙈
Without filters except the noise, the experience is also unpleasant as you can feel that in hands!
