- Another Mario romhack, this time sent to us by 1upclock. There are two branching paths eventually both leading to the end. This video has the first three levels of the speed path.

God, there's a lofi quality to romhack videos that's really starting to show through. They're so genuinely unscripted, have lower quality mics, and this strangely anarchist vibe. I know that sounds dramatic, but our closet popular relative now is the curated Mario Maker. This just hits different, even more so after all this time.
how a game cartridge being flipped managed to land on its corner is beyond my understanding of physics
My guess was that Proton Jon was being a smartass and didn't want to do the Kaizo type stages, so he stalled for a bit and chose the speed stages just so that he doesn't have to suffer through Kaizo once more.
There's a massive different between how they're used in the original game and how they're used in difficult hacks. Usually in the original they were used to accent a secret in the stage, but 9/10 times in hacks they're used as cheap kills.

Don't mind me, just watching 11 year old videos of a guy playing a 29 year old game.
Man....sometimes it's nice to go back to Jon's romhack videos and see where it all began. He was the first LP'er I ever saw, and still my favorite. I've probably gone back and watched all these hundreds of times, and I'll be damned if I ever stop.
Watching just the beginnings of Jon's videos from the start is awesome, you can watch his resignation grow with every new romhack as they break his spirit, one by one.
I've played all three Kaizo Mario's and still like invisible blocks, but I like them much better when they are used not, to kill you, but like to prevent you from getting a 3up, or secret exit. I use them like that in my romhacks. Clever placement of invisible 1up blocks isn't used often either.

The first video of Jon's that I watched. The first Let's Player I ever watched. Before Markiplier and Jacksepticeye. I still find myself coming back to Jon's channel and watching all his old RomHack videos. I still love them.
This was one of the first videos I watched on youtube, and yet I still remember this video so clearly. Also that "still 4 minutes left" got me, I almost forgot the youtube video length limit was a thing, and all the stuff you had to do just to get custom thumbnails

Jon's just brilliant, since all of his humor is natural, it's not forced. My favorite TH-cam LPs by far.
Wow, eight years and there was no change whatsoever in Jon's voice. Perhaps a bit lower-pitched now, but largely it's the exact same.

I was drinking at that time, and a whole lot of water came out of my nose, it was worth it though, since i was laughing for about 3 minutes straight, AWESOME!

you know, at least in this romhack, it seems like he put the invisible coin blocks for a reason other than just a cheap way to make it harder

Invisible coin blocks are the greatest. It is that same joy you get from (nerd alert) spending hours setting up a D&D game, rolling the dice once, and everyone dieing from a cavein/lightning strike/whatever.
I know I am the last bastion of a losing fight here, but:
-"forte" is a MiddleFrench word meaning "strength" pronounced "fohrt"
-"forté" is an Italian word meaning "loud" pronounced "fortay"

Watching this since 2010-2011...
so old me...
Going to have to try this one. The invisible block puzzles don't so much annoy me as just present a reason to constantly be on edge, and be prepared to always have a backup plan when jumping.
