No.23 Some stages require to find a hidden block just to access the next area. If you want to use hidden blocks, make sure to give player hints with coins or ground decorations.

He precisely said among the lines of encouraging creating a remake with interesting twists, but really discourages making the very exact same level. This holds true for SMB1 1-1.

And while we're at it ...just don't even put enemies, no obstacles either....just a straight shot to the goal.
On number 38 I would say that it can be okay to make labyrinths as long as you give the player lots of room and lots of time. It can be fun and rewarding to find the exit. These work well in ghost houses as many players feel more accomplished after completing the level. :D

I think a big thing to note with this video, especially if you read the comments...
These are what Smashy wants in their levels but it doesn't mean you should complete adhere to it.
What do YOU want and what is fun for YOU.
While a lot of people might talk about PIck-A-Door as negative a lot of people liked Teleporter mazes or others like more cautious underwater dark levels sometimes lit up more.
Just do it well, since most of the stuff in this video referenced it at the worst but otherwise would be amazing if done in the right level or situation.

Apart from the labrynth and a few others, most of the stuff is used in many of the best kaizo and generally hard levels. How many times has CarlSagan42 and Juzcook gotten a kaizo fish to the head 😆

If I really think about these. Some of the thing you talk about can be use in a good way.
1)Offscreen thwomp can be use in a good way. That is using it to activate a block to drop power up for player or be use for a mini puzzle.
5)Pick a random door can be using in funny way to fool player to think there is a trap. When there is no trap and all door send them to same place any way. Also reward them a power up for going into it.
6)Naked pipe... Umm... Kaizo and auto level often does this.
22)Long clear pipe be use to let use know what they up against or use it as being part of a pokemon music show case.
27)As much people don't like ideal of killing Yoshi. But some time it can be made in a way that you have to save Yoshi to clear a level.
29)Unobtainable power up can be use as hint to guide user to know where to go. I find few level that does this.
32)Enemy in ? block can be use for puzzle level.

The pick a door thing gave me an idea that you pick a path, you can win through whichever you choose, but some might have more paths.

Unfortunately most people would see the doors and immediately stop playing and boo the level.
You're better off doing this via a red-coin level looking setup so that way it looks like you're collecting coins and players won't expect the worst.

Honestly, I mean it's one thing not to be a troll about it, but completely avoiding making a valid water, dark, or water and dark level is just limiting the creator.
Water levels exist people, it's not usually a surprise from most thumbnails...don't act like nobody can make these levels

I have to disagree with #14: not everyone loves 1-1 levels with a twist because those twists are usually just putting the game in another style or adding 1-2 Also we do not want to see each other's merit because most people who would make these also have enemy spam levels with dev blocks/exits and flat nothingness for the rest of the level

Minor dispute with #17--I think Bomb Excavation can be fairly fun if used in conjunction with a boss fight of sorts. For example, having to excavate 3-4 layers of blocks surrounding the axe in a castle level while dodging flames and bullet bills coming at you. It'd have to be done correctly of course.

When I make levels, I'm always careful that there are no softlocks and no ways to cheese the level. And of course I don't insert any trolls in my levels.

Dark under water levels can be good if you put items that will let that the players see like for example putting arrows in the ground
