By the way Janet, this song is about the reunification of North and South Korea that's why it's so moving to them
It is now but it's a really old song - probably over 600 years old and is considered the national folk song of Korea - there are almost 60 versions of this song. Before the North-South divide, it was also Korea's protest anthem against Japanese occupation - ultimately its a bittersweet love song about two lovers separated (either by high waters or by death) - and the male sings this song to express his sorrow - btw, this entire special was dedicated to Airirang Alone as each of the performers did their version of the song
@@jamesrawlins735 Arirang Alone is actually not an old song like 600 years. It is from 1990. But the Arirang in the middle of the performance is the "Arirang", which has been colloquially delivered to the Koreans of nowadays.
Funny fact is, that we even don't know what Arirang means, as it is an ancient word which is already died out from modern Korean. But, still the word Arirang describes and represents of Koreans' sorrow, on which our culture and art has been based on.
@@SB-kk5ji It might not be from 600 years ago, but the song can be traced back to the 1700's. Although the meaning of arirang might not have a mean today as a word by itself, if you look at the root words it can be loosely translated to mean "my beloved one", "my beloved" or "my love."
So Hyang had cancer in her early 20's. Treatment cured her from cancer, but she cannot conceive. She also had health problems for past 10 years including pneumonia and hepatitis infections. When she sang "You raise me up" several years ago, she was in the hospital sick with pneumonia, and doctor told her not to even talk, but she sang. th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html (this is why she gets so much respect and love from everyone who know her.

That performance was in 2018.
So Hyang never mentions her birth parents in her interviews, so we really do not know what kind of relationship she has with them.
So Hyang got married so young, she said in an interview that "my parents-in-law kind of raised me". She sang Christian gospel songs at church as part of POS (family band) until she was about 33 years old. In 2012, she was invited to sing in "I am Singer" competition and she placed #2 for the year. Most people in Korea never heard of So Hyang until 2012. She was then invited to sing at "Immortal Songs" and "Masked Singer" competitions from 2013 to 2017. All these competitions allowed her to sing specially arranged famous songs both in English & Korean and she kept getting better. TH-cam is what allowed millions of people outside of Korea to watch her memorable performances (I think there are about 20 of them in total) from 2016 to now.

Unfortunately she had cancer of the uterus or ovaries. On one interview she said they thought it was just one side but during the operation they found it on the other side as well and they had to remove both sides. I am not sure if that meant remove her ovaries or she had a hysterectomy, but it left her incapable of having children and she was only 21 and newly married. She is a very lovely sweet person to have such tragedy, but she feels God brought her through it and saved her life so now she sings for peoples healing and joy and for God. It all shows in her singing. Now you know why we love her so much. :)
Yup, you got it! 👍 Sohyang is all about giving hope and consolation. That's her mission statement as a singer, not entertainment like most other artists. Her bout with cancer at a young age and her faith molded her into who she is: a compassionate person, who happens to be a great singer too. That's why many, now including you I assume, can feel the genuine positive vibe emanating from her.
Many of her song choices reflected her mission statement and character such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Breathe", "Lean On Me", "Everyone". But, she also sings other types of songs, such as this one, or gospel obviously, and secular music. One thing for sure, I often cautioned reactors, before reacting to Sohyang, to bring tissue, just in case. She's been known capable to mercilessly rip open reactors' tear ducts, in a good way ofc, for multitude of reasons and emotions, because she's not just a brilliant technician, but a damn great emotive singer as well. I also don't want to give spoiler and point out which performances where there's a higher chance for tissue advisory may be higher. 😁 Some are totally safe too.
Speaking of techniques, which Sohyang gained after years of diligent and disciplined self improvement training, they are the rave of vocal pedagogy experts and enthusiasts, so much so that Sohyang is pretty much guaranteed a spot in the hall of fame of history as one of the grand masters. Unlike her personality and mission statement, when it comes to techniques, Sohyang is a true vocal monster.
Sohyang is a gift from God.. You will not find a better person or vocalist/message deliverer.. Anywhere .

This performance always makes me tear up... it's so emotional, especially when you understand the meaning, dream of reunification between North and South Korea... she brings the hope in the first part, warmth... and then she wins power and goes stronger to feel hopeful at the last part, it's just so moving...
Sohyang is absolutely different from other singers. Her uniqueness ranges from vocal techniques to personal characters. She's definitely an admirable person. Can't but love her and I'm so happy that she's near me.

Wonderful reaction. Sohyang is a great singer but an even greater performer and story teller. She connects with her audience with a variety of styles that fit the story of each song. She is a gospel singer first of all and this experience gives her a personal connection to each member of the audience that everyone feels. She often leaves the stage to walk through the audience shaking hands while singing -- just as if she was still in church. The wide variety in her TV performances, like Arirang, would offer the material for a masterclass in confidence, charisma, and communication on the stage. In Lean on Me, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Childish Adults, You Raise Me Up, Fate, Everyone, I Am Nothing, and others - even when wearing a silly mask in King of Mask Singers - she exudes exactly the right emotion to capture the listener's heart.
So glad you experienced Sohyang's charm in this magical performance of Arirang Alone. BTW, Sohyang and her team arranged this song, originally a traditional, relatively simple folk song, with drama and energy that encapsulated the Korean history and spirit. Many make the statement that music transcends language barrier as you touched on. One can hardly find a better representative than Sohyang here. The joy of peaceful coexistence, the tumultuous historical suffering, and longing desire for unification are all captured in this breathtaking stage through Sohyang's captivating voice. Very telling that you characterized her charisma as warmth, which is something she exudes in almost all her performances. This aura stemmed from her sincere desire to help and comfort others through music (paraphrasing her own words). There are many amazing performances by Sohayng. I just noticed, Why in every of this Arirang Alone reaction video, almost no one give an appreciation to that cute skillful violinist? She was something. I even watched the video once again just to see her along the show. I love her.

Exactly. I noticed this the first time I saw this, and have no clue who she is, and I hear other more well know violinists that cannot play half as good as this lovely young woman.
I always wait and see if the reactor says anything about the violinist and am nearly always disappointed. They purposely cut away and cut back when she comes on stage to bring her to attention. Not only is she on fire but it's almost a duet with them both wearing white and the playoff between them. She doesn't get nearly enough appreciation. I did know her name, she was on one of those American talent shows with another girl but I forget how to spell it.
I've seen two reactors praise the violinist so far but yeah it's rare. Probably because most focus is on Sohyang herself since that's who they're usually reviewing.
So Hyang is lovely humble and friendly person, self deprecating. She doesn't think herself to be a great singer at all and has even thought about giving it up in previous years because of her doubts over her appeal. Funnily enough it was a TH-cam analysis of her singing that encouraged her to not retire. Frankly though, she is a world class singer. She does get to the USA to do concerts sometimes.

SoHyang herself taught students about stage-presence and confidence in Korean university of music. you should definitely checkout more songs of her in your channel. not only sweet-warn she can strong and powerful too, even A tough song like "I have nothing" by Whitney Huston, SoHyang just sings it like she owns it, so much confidence...

Unfortunately no, she don't have children, after survived her servix cancer at her 20s she wasn't able to give a birth. But yes , I think you're right, she will be a lovely mother, simply because she IS a lovely woman, on and off the stage. I have my thought that her charisma, gestures, voice are a straight bless from God, or you may say a gift, a gift for not giving up all the hard times she have been through in her life.
You need to check her life story, that way you'll be inspired and get a different view while watching every of her performances.

That is why so many people react emotionally to her songs. She connects to her audience in a very special way. So Hyang met her husband (who is also a drummer and musician) when they were in college - and they married when they were both 21 years old. Her husband is involved with song choices as a producer. She is also very close to parents-in-law and sister-in-law (JinJoo, who is a famous guitarist). So Hyang and JinJoo published their new song recently. th-cam.com/video/SaCiGNU9lso/w-d-xo.html In a recent TV interview (3 parts, about 1.5 hours long that focused on her home and family life) both So Hyang and her father-in-law were interviewed. So Hyang said that she loved both her father-in-law and mother-in-law so much that she biggest fear is if one of them pass away (she was tearful when this subject came up). She fills her home with love and then spreads the love to friends and now to everyone who listens to her songs. Having this inner peace and happiness must be the reason why she exudes so much warmth. I watched interview with Dimash as well, and he also has a wonderful family (although he is still single) that he loves. Dimash said that his mission is to show how wonderful the people of Kazakhstan (his home country) are to everyone around the world with his music. Both So Hyang and Dimash seem to have a higher calling than just singing for money and fame. Perhaps that is why most people are magically attracted to them. It is not only the high, strong & perfect voices, but a sense of kindness & goodness that people yearn for in these days when most of the news we read is about people who spread their anger and hatred toward other people.
just wanted to tell you that this was an excellent comment, & absolutely true to the utmost degree; dimash & so hyang, when push comes to shove, are definitely the two vocalists who i'm most enamored with, who've invoked an emotional response & a deep connection to & with my heart&soul.
there are many other absolutely excellent vocalists/musicians (katrina velarde is another favorite of mine)... but so hyang & dimash just attach to the depths of my being each time i hear them sing.
Dimash and So Hyang are my top two vocalists, although I love countless others. They seem like such beautiful people inside and out and even though I don't know either of them, I have love for them and their contributions to the world.
Welcome to So Hyang's world :) This is a very old folk song, something like 600 years old, but she has taken it and modernized it and rearranged it. She does all the arrangements with her team herself. The song has gone through various meanings because the lyrics are symbolic but now it is about the split between North and South Korea and the longing for unity.
So Hyang is both an incredible singer as well as a storyteller. You should look at 'bridge Over trouble Water" from Immortal Songs 2 next.

i just needed to thank you for truly feeling the music... so many here on youtube try to repress their emotional reactions to things, & i absolutely love those who are willing to share such a vulnerable (yet so beautiful) moment with us... this performance from sohyang makes me tear up from intensity & happiness still, even after hearing it hundreds of times.

Thank you so much for doing So Hyang. I have been following her for about 5 or 6 years now, and in my opinion, she is the best female vocalist on the planet. As others have already stated, she has no children, and cannot have them but..... she is a good christian woman, and loves to sing, so she can make others feel better. She is the best singing story teller ever. NO matter the song, she changes them all to make i9t hers, and tells that story with them all like no other
Everyone is another great video you need to see of hers. Its mostly in Korean, but has break of English, which she is fluent in, and one section in the middle she is singing with no orchestra. Just her voice and sounds awesome.

For me personally, SoHyang's best performances are when she was on a competition stage. The reason being, the song will be rearranged and you will get surprises along the way that will give you goosebumps and wanting more.
Sohyang dedicated her life to Christ. Everything she does, is for Christ. That is how staunch her faith is. She was offered many contracts including that from the late Michael Jackson agency. She rejected them all opting to sing for God, and for her song to comfort those in need of consolation.
One of her more trying moments was when she felt like giving up singing altogether. God gave her a sign in US, and she went back to Korea to join the King of Mask Singers. Sohyang is a prolific novelist and she has already published a few fiction novels.

Many of So Hyang's performances were in a competition. The competitors were shown at various times in her performance. Amazingly, she did not win this one even though it is and will be one of her best performances. But So Hyang did not choose to sing for wealth and fame. She sings to show God's gift to her. That's why she seems so sincere and real as she performs. The arrangements were put together by her and her team and rehearsed to near perfection but she always acknowledges that she must give God some room to get the best performance. I'm so glad that through these videos that we have gotten to know So Hyang and the amazing music she has made. May God continue to bless her!

Anything by Diana Ankudinova will be great examples of stagecraft and artistic presentation...her stage entrance for It's A Man's World is a great example.
So, let's break down the story of the song, even though she got the feeling of it through. Once upon a time in a magical time and place, south and north Korea were one, it was a happy fairytale like time, then came war and they got split, actual families never to see each other again, it was painful, but it still lives in their hearts the hope that one day they'll unite as one again and see the ones they miss and walk together.

I have seen many vocal coaches react and analyze her singing, but very few have talked about her way of interpreting the song. The video is very interesting, and, although it is not a live performance, it is a video recorded in one take, which makes it impressive.
