It is a game changer for interviews and calls. I almost wish Elgado didn't make this, cuz now everyone is going to be doing it!

The problem with a larger teleprompter (as in your suggestion for a "full size monitor" version) is that if you read text from it, your eyes will very obviously be darting left-and-right, which honestly makes the reader look like an idiot. It helps to put the monitor/teleprompter (and camera) farther away, but that puts you back to the problem of trying to read it, as well as making it hard to use a webcam which is designed to be up close. The Elgato Prompter looks to be about the right size: Big enough to read clearly, narrow enough so your eyes won't be jumping around. I'd say Elgato did their usual good job of thinking it through for real-life use. Of course a "Prompter XL" would be fine for the "eye contact" illusion in meetings where you're not actually reading rows of text.
Irrespective of the size of the screen, when using it as a teleprompter, you can limit the width of the text to, say, the middle third of the screen, to avoid the problem with your eyes scanning. Too much text on the screen at once makes it too easy to lose your place, anyway.

Good video as always, my friend. Here's a tip for using a teleprompter: Keep it at a distance. You don't want your eyes to scroll. The further, the better. When you're reading, try to skip some words and add your own to make it sound more natural. I understand that the prompter might seem too small to place further from you, which can be a design flaw. I think one thing to consider about a larger, full-monitor prompter is that it would telegraph more eye movement as you scan from one side of the screen to the other, especially at closer ranges. It would become clearer on camera that you're reading and break the "immersion" factor that using a prompter is geared towards.
I think the point would be that you can be farther from the prompter if it's bigger, but you're probably right that people would use it much closer than they're supposed to. It would mean it would be a useful second monitor for when you're not using the prompter features though.

I have one of those small prompters that uses a phone, and while you make some great points... there's one thing that this can't do that mine can. I can use the Prompt Smart Pro app that will scroll the text as I talk. It's listening to what I say and will scroll as I complete sentences. If I stop speaking, it's stops. I've not seen another prompter software that can do this. For me, that's worth dealing with it being flimsy and a slight PITA. And I just use one of my older phones anyways, that way I can use my current phone as a remote for the app. If this had that ability... I'd be all for it, but without it, all those other benefits are moot for me. I will also say that a bigger prompter sounds nice, but not with a wide lens as being that close, it will become apparent that you're reading rather than having, what looks like, a genuine conversation with your viewers.
Anybody else watch this and immediately think to themselves "I could rig up a 15 inch monitor with a 2 way mirrored acrylic panel and put my camera behind it..." No, just me? Well good because I am doing it, thanks for the idea Harris.
I’ve been using a Teleprompter on my channel for 2 years now; it’s been a game changer. It makes my whole production process more streamlined, being able to write my script, ensure I say the right things, and it cuts down editing. I have had a similar setup to this through different components, but it’s all been jank - so having an AIO setup, so much cleaner.
This product looks amazing. Almost exactly what I’ve been looking for to solve my problem when recording video and reading scripts. Also the twitch chat integration is a huge plus. I hate looking away from my camera to engage with chat
Can we just admit that this video is low-key a masterpiece...In many ways 👍 Love the way you do things, Harris! Learning a lot! And the Elgato Prompter is absolute 🔥
Everything said in this video about the benefits of teleprompters is spot-on. Couldn't agree more. But with all due respect to the wonderful and innovative company, Elgato, we'd never use this. Anything that attaches to the lens is a complete pain in the rear-end during production. Not to mention probably not too great for your camera's lens mount. We've tried many of these rigs and found the absolute best setup to be the ikan Elite Tablet & iPad Light Stand Teleprompter. It's just the glass, shroud and monitor holder, but what's cool is that it mounts to a light stand which you set up in front of your camera. Add a monitor or iPad and you're in business. But the best part is that you can quickly pull it away when you no longer need it and easily put it back. No lens adapters or any of that silliness. Really nice when you have multiple cameras you'd like to use it with.
This looks super cool, but maybe it’s just me, during the sponsor segment it still looks like his eyes are constantly darting off camera? Idk if it’s because he’s actually looking away from the camera, or maybe the prompter screen is too big and so his eyes aren’t technically always looking at the lens?
It takes a bit of skill to read text without looking directly at it. It’s doable and you can get used to it, but it’s not intuitive. Maybe he’s suffering from this? Anyone can learn to properly read from a promoter though
This will be an absolute game changer for me - I always trip up on my words etc when in front of a camera as I'm still pretty camera shy and get anxious about it. I'm always conscious of looking over at the camera flip screen and not the actual lens often as well, as I'm always making sure the shot looks good. Was wondering what the next step for Elgato would be, and this is an amazing (if not my favourite) addition.
Bought it frame one! A few months ago I was looking for teleprompter and was disappointed Elgato didn’t have one. They made EXACTLY what I needed, can’t wait for it to turn up.
Remember, if the prompter gets too big, then your viewers will start to notice your eyes moving from left to right as you read the script. That’s why I think it serves a function for it to be small.
If you are sitting really close like in this video then a small 8 inch screen is probably fine. But with a larger screen you can set the prompter further back and still read the text. You can also use larger text with a wider margin if you are concerned about eye movement. Also sometimes zoom calls can have several people on screen so a larger screen makes it easier to see them. All that said I think this product will be perfect for a lot of people. It's an all in one solution. No need to shop around for a monitor with image flip.
if they had a 24" and 27" telepromter size then they will definitely be selling big in the media studio production space. That being said, I'd buy it just for my corporate video clients.
First, thank you for your work. Always neat and straight to the point. Second, this gadget happens to solve a lot of my problems with recording scripted videos and the chat idea is AWESOME! I hate when I read the chat and I have to remember to look at the camera for engaging. Thank you so much Senpai!
Lol, too expensive. I can get a second hand Desview teleprompter for below 50 bucks if I only want the teleprompting part. 279 is ridiculous, even with a 'second monitor'. The second monitor I can make by buying a 7 inch screen on Amazon or Aliexpress for 50 bucks and then connecting it to an hdmi port on my GPU. Total cost < 100 bucks if you include a second hand teleprompter. You would essentially pay 200 bucks for the software alone. Granted, that is okay if you actually use specific features. But this product should be 80-100 bucks cheaper if you think about it.
@@SuellioAlmeidaI’m a pretty handy guy, I can usually put new parts in my computer, could probably build one from scratch, I can clean my house, fix broke furniture, do gardening etc… But I also have a full time job that I earn money for: I spend that money so I can save my time later.
@@SuellioAlmeidaStill a company trying to squeeze the most amoun of money with a product that should obviously be cheaper is not that good. They are pandering to the dumb rich audience. @@SuellioAlmeida In five minutes on Amazon I found a comparable (1024x600, 9in, IPS) screen for $60. The convenience of all-in-one is pretty minimal. The idea of a $280 teleprompter being accessible to everyone (seriously, everyone) is pretty laughable.
Dude. Seems like I can always rely on this channel to have the kind of video I'm looking for. The other videos I found reviewing this were fine but they were a bit of a mess. Thanks for making this. Hope y'all have a merry Christmas as well :)
This is freaking amazing. I've had a $200 teleprompter sitting in my closet for a couple years that I used for like one project and that was it, but the screen feed on this one is mega sauce.
if the screen is too big, youd have to be farther away for it not to pick up the eye movements youlle be making while reading the text on a larger surface so it would pretty much defeat the purpose. the distance between the edges of the two way mirror and the camera lens would be longer and so when you look at the edges of the teleprompter it would be more noticeable in the shot
Great explanation, as I wondered what all the fuss was about with this new Teleprompter. Makes total sense now that you showed it in action. Thanks for posting this video.
Love the Freudian slip in the video info "Elgato PROMOTER". Seriously, I'm planning to redo my home office and I will plan some space for this. The Prompter-XL would absolutely change the world of web meetings.
5:05 Can you explain how you actually tethered the camera to have its video screen mirrored into your computer to be able to show it in the prompter display? You glanced over that process as if it's so easy, but I don't quite understand. I'm using a Sony a7SII camera myself, and find the tethering a nuisance, considering connecting an HDMI monitor directly to it.
I use a teleprompter outside a lot and having a SUPER bright screen would be the best feature for me, so hard to read off the mirror outside in sunlight, any prompter will work in a dimly lit studio like yours. Larry
The use of an external monitor (also big ones) as the base of a teleprompter is not a new idea. That’s basically how many teleprompters work in TV production. What elgato has done is make it much smaller, more affordable, and convenient in an all-in-one solution for prosumers. This whole setup can be done DIY, but the bigger you go, the more you run into bulkiness, weight, cable, and light issues.
Thats really cool. I've been taping a piece of paper with my typed script. What is that awesome video of the earth and underwater scene on the big screen?
Well the problem with making the screen biger is then you wouldn't be looking directly into the lens since you would be looking around the lens. The only way it would work is if it were super far away but then that defeats the purpose of the monitor being bigger.
I find it gamechanging, I've always done this with an extremely small display which is exactly on the right side of the camera, so you can read the chat perfectly and look almost into the cam. But with this, especially because you can control it as an additional monitor is perfect. I like this idea very much.
I have 4 teleprompters and always fall back to my first one from 20 years ago that I put a newer Lilliputing 11” monitor in. But it’s kludgy and I was close to shelling out the 2k plus for an ikan model. But this looks amazing. Ordered as soon as I saw the thumbnail for this video.
I have been waiting for this for years. I have been workshopping budget ways to make one in my free time. Now I can just buy it. I'm pumped. Promoter for chat, then prompter xl for the game. Always just staring into the audiences soul.
Saw the tweet from Elgato this morning and instantly ordered it. I do a lot of UGC work on TikTok, so this is a gamechanger for me. This video of yours just made me even more happy about ordering this.
I use webcams. I use a teleprompter too. I was excited about this but I’m not sure it’d work with webcams. I’ll keep it in the back of my mind since it’s be nice to upgrade. Teleprompters are gold. Makes recording a video take 1/8 the time if I just sit and write a script first.
HAHAHAHAHAH I laughed so loud in the end when you mention the full size monitor because that was what I was thinking from the first minute of the video! I felt like you read my mind 😂
Important question: The widest it can go is 17 to 20mm, but is this specifically full frame? For example, I use a 16mm on a Canon m6 which is cropped, so should I treat it like the 24mm it "technically" is?
when you said "Use 1" i thought to myself, this would be great for reading chat (not just Twitch) and i was blown away by "Use 4". i literally have my chat and cam as close to eye level as i can get so i'm looking towards the viewer. couple this with a switch to camera output, then stream output, then obs, then back to chat. absolute endless use cases i can also think of. i'll also admit that the price is really modest as the people that NEED something like this is not the beginner streamer/content creator... its the people that make their income from content. can they afford NOT to buy it?
When I wrote about that being Apple's tactic, a marketing lecturer got mad and gave me a bad grade! Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this is how they operate vs "everything was invented by Apple and they are creative, innovative and great". I would argue being last to market, so you can refine an idea and streamline the experience of using it, is still innovative in it's own way, and I wasn't saying that was their strategy to detract from them.
I want one. Do you have audio mic LAG vs. video from the DSLR? I have that with my nikon when using it for web chat/Zoom calls. Unless I plug the mic into the camera which isn't optimal.
I initially thought a larger prompter would be great, but the issue I came across was... I really dislike when I notice someone is reading while looking into the camera. A larger screen would then result in the eye focus being SLIGHTLY off most of the time, which would feel really weird. I think it's hard to go much bigger, while still being able to make it feel like you're looking straight into the lens, and not at the side.
As an all-in-one setup this is truly awesome. I agree. Prompter XL to go 16 in screen or larger would be awesome, but obviously that targets industry groups and would need other features that aren't their current demographic market. I look forward to seeing this paired with the footpedal though in smaller studios or student production houses to cycle the scripts up and down. It'd be like a more affordable news studio at that point.
I havint been streaming for a while. But I can say this sounds and looks like a game changer! Feel like this is a good step in the right direction of creativity. Great video Harris!
That's a great demonstration and explanation thank you. I've used a teleprompter on and off for years and this would be a nice upgrade. The monitor connected to the computer is a great addition.
This sounds awesome. On a full scale display teleprompter… you might have get less perception of eye-contact because the speaker would potentially have to move their head and eyes further from edge to edge.
If the screen in the prompter is big isn't there a risk that the camera will perceive you looking slightly away from the camera when you look at something that isn't direct center?
2:39 Pretty good, pretty good. But I could still see you looking down at the streamdeck. A footpedal will 100% be better mid-shot vs streamdeck to setup for the shot.
Genuinely, as somebody who wants to go into more tutorial type of videos but have issues remembering everything that I need to talk about, this is definitely a game changer. I hope that with this I should finally feel comfortable enough to make the videos I've been planning and working on for the last few months
Am I the only one wondering how to setup the prompter so you can switch between different inputs? A computer as second screen and B as field monitor for the camera
This is fortuitous indeed! I've been on the prowl for a good Teleprompter and was looking in all the expensive places (here's looking at you B&H!) and should have looked at Elgato again! Thanks for the video, and as a fellow BYU grad, nihongo to ganbatte ne!
Nice review and introspective…surely the bigger the screen gets, the more likely you are to see your eyes scanning from left to right (or visa versa) whilst you are reading from the teleprompter. You have to move the promoter away from you to stop that scanning, the the promoter gets smaller. There must be an optimum size that allows you to have it close enough without the scanning problem. Is the Elgato the perfect size already?
I'm usually critical of Elgato products, but as someone who has bought and used teleprompter kits off amazon, the requirement for phone or tablet, crap software, shoddy build quality etc makes for a real pain of an experience. Elgato really nailed this one, they saw the gap in the market and delivered
This is super interesting. I was never interested in getting a teleprompter, but this looks like a really neat and useful product that I can totally see using myself. I have sooo many zoom calls and this could easily make them all better.
so.... i was already using a teleprompter for streaming specifically for the ability to "look at chat" but the website i have to use to flip the twitch chat adds like 2-10 more seconds of delay. being able to use the chat screen from OBS makes this so tempting. it also means i could use my tablet for other things while i'm live
You know what, that could actually be quite cool to use in livestreaming. Imagine having your chat on that, and for those "just chatting" scenes you will actually be looking at the chat while talking to it.... so that you don't look else where, like you are looking straight at the audience. Am I overthinking it?
They need to add a microphone feature to that so when you talk into the words keep up with your voice and speed of your talk. so you don’t have to keep scrolling up or down to keep up with the words. Also it would be cool it the words highlighted after you said them so you know were to read next instead of it all being the same color
Apart from the prompter I'd actually be interested in sort of a "business update" video. I remember u sharing some stuff about streambeats a year or smth like that into it. Would be cool to see how it's going currently from a more detailed perspective.
Dude, the intro was 🔥 I work on Zoom calls 40 hours a week and not being able to look at the cam easily is a peeve of mine! Might pick one of these up and see if it helps!

I have had a similar setup to this through different components, but it’s all been jank - so having an AIO setup, so much cleaner.
amazing video, can’t wait to get one of these
I use a 19" PrompterPeople one and swapped out the screen for a high bright Lilliput monitor. Its a full size monitor at this point.
I need the full monitor version. Like seriously. It’s a great idea! Please Elgato
@@travisminneapolis That's great idea. What exact Lilliput monitor are you using?
He looks away a handful of times and blinks, looking staring straight ahead 100% of the time is uncomfortable for speaker and viewer
I immediately went straight to Elgato and ordered this thing.
Its sold out since weeks here, in Germany, unfortunately :/
Really cool intro, one of your best tbh, which is saying a lot considering how many you have, very MKBHD feeling!
Then they could just add a adjuster to move where the words are in the prompter then have it as a big screen otherwise/
It's dope how you show what you're doing while you're doing it. Super helpful. Thanks!
if they had a 24" and 27" telepromter size then they will definitely be selling big in the media studio production space.
But this product should be 80-100 bucks cheaper if you think about it.
if you want to pay price of cost for everything you own in your life without paying for convenience you'll always think everything is too expensive
@@SuellioAlmeidaI’m a pretty handy guy, I can usually put new parts in my computer, could probably build one from scratch, I can clean my house, fix broke furniture, do gardening etc…
But I also have a full time job that I earn money for: I spend that money so I can save my time later.
@@SuellioAlmeidaStill a company trying to squeeze the most amoun of money with a product that should obviously be cheaper is not that good. They are pandering to the dumb rich audience. Like Apple selling cheap things as expensive stuff. Like diamond sellers that inflate prices out of nothing. That elgato price is ridiculous for reasonable people. Not unreasonable for rich people.
For me it looks like it should replace gears for around $800 so it seems pretty cheap and get better integration with stream deck
Ordered one this morning. Excited for it! I've been waiting for something like this to try tackling my on-screen voice work
if the screen is too big, youd have to be farther away for it not to pick up the eye movements youlle be making while reading the text on a larger surface so it would pretty much defeat the purpose. the distance between the edges of the two way mirror and the camera lens would be longer and so when you look at the edges of the teleprompter it would be more noticeable in the shot
Am so amazed of how talented and creative you are the first section of this video is absolutely amazing. The cuts the scene is amazing.
5:05 Can you explain how you actually tethered the camera to have its video screen mirrored into your computer to be able to show it in the prompter display? You glanced over that process as if it's so easy, but I don't quite understand. I'm using a Sony a7SII camera myself, and find the tethering a nuisance, considering connecting an HDMI monitor directly to it.
the bokeh, the lighting, the colors, geez Harris this video is beautiful
I use a teleprompter outside a lot and having a SUPER bright screen would be the best feature for me, so hard to read off the mirror outside in sunlight, any prompter will work in a dimly lit studio like yours. Larry
This is exactly what I have been looking for. THANK YOU!
Great video, such a good job done in presenting this new prompter. Thank you!
Just curious-Was it back ordered when you ordered?
I use webcams. I use a teleprompter too. I was excited about this but I’m not sure it’d work with webcams. I’ll keep it in the back of my mind since it’s be nice to upgrade. Teleprompters are gold. Makes recording a video take 1/8 the time if I just sit and write a script first.
If the monitor is too big, then you will look like you're not looking directly into the camera.
Love your videos Harris, you have become a benchmark for me when it comes to new streaming equipment and advice ❤.
I want one. Do you have audio mic LAG vs. video from the DSLR? I have that with my nikon when using it for web chat/Zoom calls. Unless I plug the mic into the camera which isn't optimal.
I’m excited to see people start using this. It’s a big step forward
Just narrow the text box on the larger promoter so it’s less noticeable when you read
@@JurijsJutjajevs - "Have a bigger screen, but also don't use the full screen"
Obviously it could have more uses than text, but yeah!
Oh daang that looks awesome! I have 0 use for it but dang it looks sick! Great work Elgato.
Fab video as always Mr. Harris!
I’ve been waiting for something like this for a while. I’m so glad that I don’t have to try to piece one together. Thank you for the great video!
Seems neat. I have always tried to have my chat as near to my camera as I can, just to try and get that "I am looking at you" vibe when I read it
Love the beginning of the video. Love the Elgato idea! Thanks for the review! 🤯🤯🤯
I hope that with this I should finally feel comfortable enough to make the videos I've been planning and working on for the last few months
rt
Wonderful video. Fantastic intro!
Am I the only one wondering how to setup the prompter so you can switch between different inputs? A computer as second screen and B as field monitor for the camera
This is actually an incredible product, great examples. I'm sold.
Larger screens are a bad idea. Because then your head and your eyes. Have further to travel left, right
This is fortuitous indeed!
Can you use the foot pedal to adjust the speed instead of the dial knob? more hiding of the magic..
Could be cool.
The opening shot where it’s zooming out to show the teleprompter and then you turn your camera to also show you by the teleprompter broke my brain 🤯
Oh man, perfect timing! Been looking for something like this for my training calls. Can’t wait to purchase this!!
Never thought I would see Harris reviewing a teleprompter of all things
so.... i was already using a teleprompter for streaming specifically for the ability to "look at chat" but the website i have to use to flip the twitch chat adds like 2-10 more seconds of delay. being able to use the chat screen from OBS makes this so tempting. it also means i could use my tablet for other things while i'm live
Doing the same with a cheap external monitor on my prompter. Nothing new here but it’s a good all in one solution for the masses.
You know what, that could actually be quite cool to use in livestreaming. Imagine having your chat on that, and for those "just chatting" scenes you will actually be looking at the chat while talking to it.... so that you don't look else where, like you are looking straight at the audience. Am I overthinking it?
This thing is so good and so useful...So many use cases and well thought thru.
